Just finished Gundam 08 MS Team.
I didn't realize how different the official translantion was from the fan translation until now. Wow.
Saw my two favorite episodes back to back. I hate Zeon, but I must admit Norris Packard is an ace pilot. Truly masterful use of his custom Gouf, as well as a dedication to the specifics of a mission.
The death of the Zeon pilots trying to get home in the clusterf+#* situation that the guerilla village turned into still gets to me. MS 08 team really humanized the pilots and people on both sides, although Arth got what was coming to him(there is a chance he was a bit insane with hunger/losing it after so long on the battlefield though). The guy outranking Kojima was a true bastard, trying to find a way around the Antarctic Treaty in the sleaziest manner possible...
AH, listen to me going on and on.
Time to take a break from Gundam and fire up the last bit of the Macross series- MACROSS FRONTIER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gu Family Book: not an anime, but a Korean fantasy television series now on Netflix. I just blitzed through it yesterday on a sick day. Its a good combination of a love story and political drama with decent fight scenes with only the occasional wire-fu. Clearly defined good vs evil. They do a great job of developing side characters while keeping the cast manageable and interesting.
A warning for those interested, it is labeled as PG, but I think that rating is a lie. The fighting is PG, with blood almost comically missing from most fights, but they don't shy away from a number of adult themes like someone being sold into a gisaeng house (a Korean equivalent to Japanese geisha) - with the sexual implications followed through, murder of family memebers, and a few people even committing suicide on screen. The first 2 episodes are a prologue with some of the worst parts happening then, so I recommend watching them before showing to children.

Watched Mobile Suit Gundam Origin... and it was awesome!
Seeing how Char earned his "Red Comet" moniker was great... though the the CG animation that was used seemed out of place to me from purely an original Gundam standpoint.
I'm hoping that there are more of these movies to come, considering how this one ended.

I still can't believe Mahouka is getting a second series.
I'm not one to regularly jump on fiction and charging it with being harmful, but damn. Like if Ayn Rand or Terry Goodkind were Imperial apologists.

I have some friends who do convention panels on terrible anime. I will have to ask them about Mahouka.
For those who may be interested they record their panels

I'll list a few oldies...
Records Of The Lodoss Wars: Ghim is one of the best, if not best portrayal of dwarf in movies/series/tv. Also, a proof that contrary to misguided Paizo claims elves are smaller than humans!
Ghost In The Shell: All those years and I still love the scenes with the city after the rain...
Akira: March of the toys, the choirs singing akira, the finale...
Maybe later I think of something newer.
I agree with all three, though Ghim is awesome, my favorite was woodchuck the rogue from lodoss wars. The tv series for record of lodoss wars was an excellent follow up.
Throw in Ninja Scroll, Demon City Sinjinku (movie not tv show), and X for me ad well.

I was able to rent it this weekend through my Playstation 3- loved it!

So that's it for Yona for the moment. I really want more seasons.
Kamisama Hajimemashita and Milky Holmes end next week. KH needs more seasons too. MH, well this story is self-contained so storywise there is no need for more, but if they make more seasons that are fun (unlike that whole Feathers thing), good. If not, I'll survive.
The magical pretty boys are over in a brilliant finale. However much I enjoyed this one I don't really see that they need more seasons. Parodies are best in small amounts while it's still funny. Dragging it out beyond this is probably not the best choice.
But that means that the only show I'm actually looking forward to is the new season of Knights of Sidonia.

well this was pretty cool
That... was one of the most beautifully made pieces of propaganda I've ever seen. Not-so-subtle on the 'killing Skywalker thing, eh?
The animation was rather amazing - style of the 80s anime, superior to many late-90s/early-00s 'toons that used computer animation, and excellently choreographed. Very well done.

Can't find Record of the Lodoss war but have watched the first few episodes of Guin Saga, pretty good.
Submitted for your viewing... enjoy!
Note: this episode is English dubbed; if you prefer the original Japanese language with English subtitles, that's fine. It can be found that way on YouTube. I'm just presenting it to you the way I was presented with it for the first time all those years ago on the Sci Fi channel.

I'm far more anime-savvy now than I was way back when, so I understand the cringe-inducing nature of the dub for this series.
Doesn't matter. At least to me.
Because as a gamer, I see this in the very context that the series arose from.
The game itself.
Besides... I think I much prefer the English dub answer of "I'm not going to answer that right now!" than the English sub version "We're not here for that!" to Deedlit's question. The sub makes Parn out to be a total di¢k while the dub just makes him an a-hole (to use GotG as a reference). And here's something else to consider: the subs also have Slayn chant the invocation followed by his lips moving in silence as though he were repeating the chant (my take) while the dub takes advantage of all that to get the the full verbal component from the Japanese in. I enjoyed that a lot more than the silence and lip moving.

Oh, I don't disagree that the dub is awesome! I just think it's also hilarious!
(In case it's not clear, I, too, was introduced by Sci-Fi, and I even went out and bought the full DVD... dubbed... and have loved it every time I've watched it. I no longer have it because a friend "borrowed" it and has never returned it...)

Does anyone know where I can watch Sword Art Online season two? Youtube has been laughing at me and will not let me watch it.
Toonami just started airing it last weekend. But if you want to binge, you can also catch it here.
SAMAS |
So with the Cour/Season over, here are my verdicts:
Cross Ange was certainly a ride. Like Valverave a year or so back, half the fun was in seeing how far it would go. The sleaze factor, which by some reports was mandated by the director, was toned down after the first few episodes, but the show seemed to take delight in trolling it's audience(and possibly the director) at times. a good example of both is when the prerequisite Beach Episode featuring a race in melting swimsuits, only to cut away to actual plot and character development right after the starting gun was fired.
Majin Bone was a show that I, once again, enjoyed a lot more than I thought I would. I would not be adverse to a second season.
Dog Days'' was a bit of a step down from the second season. I still enjoyed it, but I think maybe they need to go back to the first season's level of plot. This and the previous series had a lot of world-building, but I really think they need to actually do something more with their characters now.
Aldnoah Zero definitely ended better than the season break.
Gundam Build Fighters Try had admittedly a tough act to follow, but I do think it did very well despite it's flaws. It was only good, just not awesome. The finale was absolutely perfect, though.
Akatsuki no Yona is an awesome, if slow-paced series. If you haven't been watching it now's the time to catch up.
Gundam Reconguista in G is fun, but I think it's a little lost. IMO, it plays itself too close to the vest story-wise, hoping to drop one more surprise on you, that the story is kinda either passing it by or stalled because of it.
GARO: The Animation was an awesomely dark action series. Seriously, watch it. In fact, Funimation licensed this baby, so buy it when you get the chance.

I just finished Sword Art Online II and all I can say is that it was as good if not better than Sword Art Online I.
I really liked the first season. I almost stopped watching the series because of the second season. I really didn't like the characters added or the plot. Gun Gale Online got me back into the series. I found the characters more like able and the plot improved over the second season.
DragoDorn |
Gun Gale was the beginning of season two...
The second season was his sister/cousin thing. First season was everything before that. Naming it Sword art online 2 didn't actually make it the 2nd season. Seasons/cours are usually 12 episodes long. Sword Art online 2 is more akin to a new series in the way it was broadcast. It didn't directly follow the original series and it was planned separately. I did like Sword Art Online 2 but Season one of series 1 was the best.

Television seasons in Japan work differently. They can be either 12-14 or 24-26 episodes long.
Sword Art Online is the first season, comprising the first 25 episodes. Sword Art Online 2 is the second season.
Doing the research, the 13 episode length is called a 'cour'. Seasons can be either one or two cours.

Alllllllllllllllllmost done with AKB0048. Not sure if I'm going on to second season as I have A LOT OF STUFF TO CATCH UP ON.
Will start with Gundam Build Fighters and one other series...Not sure which, though.
Still watching Macross Frontier, just finished the first DVD. Am up to Gundam 0080 as a part of the "new year of Gundam/Macross" stuff. Not sure if I will watch Southern Cross and Mospeada after Frontier. I am missing the Frontier Movies, unfortunately.

He's not wrong, you know. Points at Cowboy Bebop as an example.
In other news, I finally watched (Season? Volume? Book?... one...) Space Dandy.
It was pretty amazing......

I was reminded of that today when I saw a kickstarter for a Space Dandy card game. At some point I need to watch it. I've heard good things.
