So... I've been binge watching Fairy Tail for the last several hours and I have to say I like it. I think Hiro Mashima's work probably lends itself better to an anime format than manga, especially with all of the wacky hijinks.

Also, at the same time, it's a little weird, but that's got everything to do with the Voice actors. This isn't the first time I've heard everyone's voice by far, but, I have to say, it's a little odd how many voice actors Fairy Tail shares with Kenichi. I wonder if Funimation just really likes using those same voice actors over and over or something.

I also binge watched fairy tail while originally catching up. The Tenrou island arc in particular kept me gripped to the screen all the way through. Still, the show is a lot of fun.

I have tried to get into manga a couple of times but so far no luck. Even series that I really like the anime for just do not seem to work as well for me in manga format.

Well, I finished up the Fairy Tail Fighting Tournament arc on the 48th episode, just trying to find a good collection of dubbed episodes that follow it before I continue. As I said, I can't really watch a lot of subbed anime, plus, I also really enjoy Cherami Leigh's and Colleen Clinkenbeard's voice acting.

This is an awesome series, but it's made to be watched out of order. If you watch it in the number-order, it loses... a... lot... of it's weight and importance.

Funimation is where I catch my episodes of Fairy Tail. You can watch for free both dub & sub from the Website ( http://www.funimation.com/shows/fairy-tail/videos/episodes )but they have commercials. If you subscribe, the commercials go away but it is not really necessary. I like to watch the episodes in HD on my Roku so I subscribe.

For Fairy Tail, the different arcs showcase varying degrees of light humor vs very dark themes. I would state that Phantom Lord, Tower of Heaven, Tenrou Island, and Grand Magic Games are all pretty dark. Still, the characters grow from these experiences. Character growth is what makes a story more solid imho.

On another note, I am still playing catch up with my Anime. Next up is Full Metal Alchemist. I watched a couple of random episodes a long time ago and was like meh. However, a buddy got me to watch the first few episodes with him. The story makes so much more sense when you watch Full Metal Alchemist from the beginning.

Yeah, character growth is one thing I think Hiro does pretty well. He's got two flaws though, one flaw is his "one-upped battles". Anyone who's read Rave Master will know what I'm talking about. He's very prone to writing characters who've been beaten to within an inch of his life, only to find a hidden strength, only for the enemy to reveal his true power and then the hero is beaten again, and then finds a second secret hidden strength, and then the villain reveals his secret ultimate power and then the hero gets beaten, and then the hero unleashes his ultimate secret hidden strength and then the villain and the hero clash once more in a single titanic blow and both are left badly beaten but the villain is defeated.

Like, near at the end of Rave Master one character uses like 3 forbidden secret, ultimate techniques; one saps the caster of all his magic, one kills the caster, and the third sacrifices his soul for ultimate power but ends up wiping him from existence. The hero used all three back to back, and each one is a 'guaranteed, unblockable-always-kills-never-fails technique' but the villain survives the first two and is only barely beaten by the third. Don't worry though, the hero who used all three of the secret forbidden techniques that always kills the caster who uses them, survived them because another big flaw is that Hiro never kills main characters. Ever. Unless they're a villain.

I've just started watching a old classic, Rose of Versailles.

On a semi-related note, what are the anime theme songs you guys like the most? The ones you actually enjoy listening to even if not watching the show?

My big 3 are..

Born, the opening themse from Le Chevalier D'Eon.

Raison D'etre, the opening theme from Claymore (and my wife's personal favorite anime so far).

And at the top Sea of Miracles, the opening theme from Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight. One of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard in any language, and as an added bonus, I can imagine it being performed without any changes in the world of the show.

Hmm... there aren't a lot of anime songs I enjoy listening too, let alone 'theme' songs.

I did, however, make a small playlist of the ones I keep coming back too that I enjoy listening to over and over again.

For those who don't want to watch it, the songs are as follows:
1) Ayumi's Song from Kaze no Stigma (I enjoy both the English and Japanese versions) [Edit] I particularly enjoy the original Japanese version of this song.

2) Hiro no Tsuki (English and Japanese) from Outlaw Star (Melfina's Song)

3)The, as bast I could find, "Sad Song" from Yu Yu Hakusho; the version on the playlist is the best recording of it I could find (seems the song was never published on a soundtrack). [Edit] Also, when this song played near the very end of the tournament in the show (you'll know what I'm talking about if you've seen it), I totally started crying.

4) The Song and the Story from Rave Master, but only the first half of it (before it switches to an upbeat song). [Edit] This is another song that is extraordinarily hard to find.

These are the 4 songs from anime I've found to enjoy immensely and listen to all the time. I don't enjoy the theme songs for anime much (though the 'Dragon them' song for DBZ wis pretty B.A.!), but it may be I just haven't found the good ones yet.

[Edit] Warning, don't read the comments in any of the videos if you want to avoid spoilers for the shows the songs come from.

There was the opening song of Evangelion... "A cruel angel's thesis"

While I detested the anime itself it makes me think of my early days of discovering the wonderful world of anime. And it doesn't hurt that it's fun to listen to.

Cruel Angel's Thesis

Can't link to stuff as I am posting from phone.

I'm old school. It doesn't get much better than bubblegum crisis music. While bubblegum crash has the occasional good song, it doesn't get better than the original. Also, do not listen to the dub. I implore you.

Giant robot music is also a staple of my ear's diet. Dangaio's opening theme and overall theme music is perfect. PERFECT. There is a recent take on the Combattler V opening that is good, along with a music video for a semi unrelated song that is breathtaking. Just YouTube Combattler V 2012 to see what I mean. There is also the soundtrack to the love child of Dangaio, Godannar, which has AMAZING music.

I love true Gundam. But I have to say aside from the opening to Zeta Gundam, the music is lacking. The only good thing to come out of the pretenders is the music of Two Mix, and G Gundam first opening is wonderful. The closing to Gundam X pulls at my heartstrings, for some reason.

But when it comes to robots, anime and music, no series does it better than Macross. Over 30 years of amazing music in every incarnation. While my personal favorite is the music of Macross frontier (I love may'n and Maya Sakamoto!!! Yoko Kanno arranged/composed all of the music, to say nothing of the work Gabriela Robin put in!), the music of Macross 7 with its John Lennonesque main character with his peace and love soundtrack brings my friends together every time- even one who HATES giant robots is a fan. A friend recently went to a concert shelling out major money just to hear two songs by the artist who did the series. I liked only one song from Macross Plus, but it's Yoko Kanno- it's all good stuff. And of course, what would Macross be without the original Super Dimensional Fortress Macross? Lynn Minmays music is amazing even today, Little White Dragon remains a personal favorite, but My Boyfriend is a Pilot is the takeaway hit that was redone in Macross Frontier. But it is the over the top music of Macross 7 that I think has the most crossover appeal. I was originally going to warn everyone off from listening to ENGLISH FIRE!! but I just discovered that it is actually part of the universe- a band on Macross 11 that is managed by *Lynn Kaifun* that claims FIRE BOMBER!! is a rip off of their original music. If you know who that is, I'll give you a million internets.

As I am old school Megumi Hayashibara is a goddess. Listen to almost every Slayers opening ever, along with the music to most 90s harem action anime such as Sorcerer Hunters and Saber Marionette J.

In terms of outliers, I loved the music to Debutante Detective Corps, Revolutionary Girl Utena, and a host of other series I can't think of right now.

There's not many Anime soundtracks that I would listen to on a regular basis but there are a couple

The opening and endings to the original Record of Lodoss War come to mind (have never actually watched RoLW:CotHK I want to but its not high on my list right now)

The music in ARIA is amazing as well.

The opening themes to Fairy Tail tend to be pretty epic as well, also the leitmotif of the guild (the semi-celtic sounding one).

hmm..thats all I can think of right now I'm sure there are more though.

(Also I don't know if it counts as Anime but the entire reason I watch RWBY is the amazing music)

Which song? I just started going through Fairy Tails OST and... wow, there is some really good music there. Lots of it sounds celtic though. I hope the bit you're referring to isn't the song they play in the background when the guild starts doing something goofy, like when Natsu and Grey act friendly in the train station when Erza is present. Fairy Tail seems to have made their own rendition of the Infernal Galop (the Can-Can song).

I'm at work right now so no Youtube to reference moments but typically it plays during the "Lets Get Dangerous" moments. Its the high fast pipe/bagpipe piece most often used during battles.

Silver Crusade

We're talking music now... what to choose?

I'll try to stick with 5 songs, with some honorable mentions... anymore than that will cause paralysis of choice on my part.

#5 - Keneda from Akira, by Geinoh Yamashirogumi. (Honorable mention goes to Doll's Polyphony by Yamashiro Shoji.)

#4 - Uta I - Making of Cyborg from Ghost in the Shell, by Kenji Kawai. (Honorable mention goes to One Minute Warning by Passengers [Brian Eno and U2])

#3 - Kon'ya wa Hurricane (There's a Hurricane Tonight) from Bubblegum Crisis, by Ohmori Kinuko. (Honorable mention goes to Mad Machine by Ohmori Kinuko.)

#2 - Kemono no Yari (The Beast Spear) from Ushio and Tora, by Shinya Iguchi. (Honorable mention goes to Yuuki No Fighter by Yasu.)

#1 - Kiseki no Umi (Sea of Miracles) , from Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of The Heroic Knight, by Maaya Sakamoto and Yoko Kanno (Notice there's no honorable mention... Kiseki no Umi is in a class all by itself.)

Though there are newer songs that I listen to (like This Will Be The Day from RWBY, by Jeff and Casey Lee Williams), these are the ones I listen to over and over again on my IPod.

"Love Survivor" from Tobikage.

"Konya Wa Hurricane," "Mad Machine," and just about everything else from the original Bubblegum Crisis. *fist bumps Freehold*

And I don't care what anyone says, "Mr Dandy" from BGC is melancholy and bittersweet and great.

I'm sure that Cruel Angel's Thesis is awesome and all, but the horrible sludge that was the show that wrapped around it has forever tainted my ability to listen to it without wanting to break things. More power to folks who dig the show and the music, though.

On a humorous note, "Battle Hackers" from Machine Robo never fails to entertain. Mecha-themed bad J-Rap? Okay!

The opener from GITS:SAC, of course.

"The Real Folk Blues," "Blue," and "Mushroom Hunting" from Cowboy Bebop, naturally.

I could go on.

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 8

I enjoy the songs from Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad, particularly the English dubs. Additionally, Angel Beats features a lot of good tunes.

Currently, enjoying The Irregular at Magic High School. Cool take on magic and there are few characters that remind me of the magus class.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'm going to be sticking with themes, because music overall is just too much. (I'll arbitrarily choose 10, but I can't possibly number them...!)

- Inner Universe (GITS:SAC)
- Seventh Moon (Macross 7)
- Tank! (Cowboy Bebop)
- Yakusoku Wa Iranai (Escaflowne)
- Kiri (Ergo Proxy)
- Sea of Miracles (Lodoss)
- I'm a Pioneer (Tenchi Muyo)
- Cruel Angel's Thesis (Evangelion)
- Full of Memories (Ranma)
- Mad Machine (BGC)

Megumi Hayashibara, Maaya Sakamoto and Kikuko Inoue pretty much were ladies I listened to during the 90s. As Freehold pointed out, Megumi had a lock on Slayers and did Sorcerer Hunters as well as Sabre Marionette J. Maaya did Vision of Escaflowne. But Kikuko Inoue was Belldandy in Ah! My Goddess! and is perhaps one of the most prolific voice actresses in the industry. She was part of the Goddess Family Club that did the opening and closing themes for the OVAs. I slowly became aware of other singers, but those three were the ones I heard the most, whether it was voice work or singing. The guys I really didn't pay as much attention to, oddly enough.

I think Megumi and Kikuko both did Ranma 1/2, but I could be wrong. Megumi was Girl 1/2 Ranma and I think Kikuko was Kasumi, which would fit her usual role type.

I just finished the first season of Psycho Pass and I...I'm speechless with amazement. There are no words that do it justice. Twisted, conflicted, heroic, tragic, intense, immersive...this is the best I can do, but these words fall utterly short of its qualities.

All I can do is reiterate my previous comment: This show is an instant classic!

However, a friend got me to watch Log Horizon recently, and all that is about to change.

The only thing that's ever come close to the humor and just all-around goofiness of Urusei Yatsura for me was KO Seiki Beast.

If you want more of a Moon Split In Two thing, you have to go for Thundarr The Barbarian.

Which, come to think of it, the Technology Guide handily enables... ;)

I tried when the book was announced. I was told by ~4 people who work for Paizo that under no circumstances will there be an energy blade in the Tech Guide because energy blades do not "fit the theme" of science fiction technology in Golarion. Also, I was, politely mind you, told to shut up when I complained about it.

Well, we could always just re-skin Brilliant Energy, right? ;)

Back on (mostly) topic, what are folks' thoughts on Appleseed XIII?

And darn it, why does Netflix only have the first 2 eps of GiTS:Arise?

(Tels doesn't like brilliant energy - I tried, and it just doesn't do it for him.)

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

I recently discovered the anime Horizon on the Middle of Nowhere and am really enjoying it.

I didn't think I was going to at first - the anime has lots of shameless fanservice, and the plot is REALLY confusing at first. It basically starts in media res without ever going back from there, expecting you to play catch up by paying careful attention to everyone's dialog.

That said, it was just interesting enough that I stuck with it, and I'm quite glad I did - if for no other reason than that the main character is simply amazing. He's one of those characters that I keep asking myself "Is he really that dumb, or is he really that smart?!" and I honestly still have no idea.

Basically, if you like over the top anime like Gurren Lagann or Kill la Kill, it will not disappoint. Also: I was completely on the edge of my seat engrossed while two characters were having a debate about global politics.

I don't think that is an experience I will ever have again. :)

That's because it doesn't work as a brilliant energy blade is incapable of cutting through a piece of yarn.

If you haven't seen it I'd recommend The Irresponsible Captain Tylor. Much of the same thing going with the main character in that one. Plus its just a really fun sci-fi anime.

Give this a whirl, Tels... I wanted a beam sword to be in the Technology Guide as well. I'm not sure how balanced it is, but if nothing else, it's a good starting point...

Beam Blade:

Beam Blade
Price 60,000 gp; Type one-handed melee; Proficiency exotic (bastard sword); Dmg (M) 1d8 slash; Dmg (S) 1d6 slash; Critical 19-20/x2; Capacity 10; Usage 1 charge/rnd.; Special touch; Weight 2 lbs.

A beam blade is an elegant but deadly melee weapon capable of inflicting horrible wounds. An inactive beam blade looks like a short baton, but when activated, it emits a translucent but substantial localized field of intensely focused photons that resembles a blade. This counts as a force effect. Attacks made with a beam blade resolve as touch attacks, and penetrates hardness as if it were made of adamantine. A beam blade's damage cannot be enhanced by strength, as it slices with equal ease regardless of the force applied. Activating a beam blade is a move action; once activated, it consumes power incredibly quickly, at the rate of 1 charge per round.
Force fields and force effects are not damaged by a beam blade, and completely block its effect.

Craft DC 30; Cost 30,000; Craft Technological Arms and Armor, military lab

As to the first question... I enjoyed it. As the series progressed, it became darker than I expected (which seriously upped the watchability factor for me somewhat).

Isn't Girls Bravo still on Netflix though? That show is only a few steps away from hentai... what could be so bad about it that Netflix would remove one show and not the other?

Is that why they're getting rid of it? Or is there some other reason?

Also, is it just getting dropped from streaming or from the DVD as well?
It's been on my DVD queue for years, but my queue grows faster than I can work through it. :)

On another note, I am still playing catch up with my...

I know, right? I've been binge watching, too. Best thing evar.
