Save or suck, caster level and spell level questions

Rules Questions

hi,
If a 10th level wizard casts charm person is the DC 10+ his level + int or DC + 1 (1st level spell) and int. If its the later, it seems odd that a higher level wizard can't make the spell more powerful.

Other than increasing INT, spell focus, and greater spell focus, is there any way to pump the DC higher? Any meta magic feats?

Balin

A spell DC is always 10+spell level+ casting stat modifier. A higher level wizard could heighten the spell with a feat and thereby raise its spell level and the DC

so increase INT, spell focus, greater S.F., heighten spell feat, and take fey or infernal bloodlines are the only ways?

And there is no way to make charm or dominate permanent? Seems for long campaigns, putting someone in your pocket could be useful. But 1day /level could be a pain. Is it broken to increase this in any way?

Persistent spell helps too -- also you could lower their save throw bonus through spells like touch of idiocy, fear, enervation and bestow curse.

Or use a similar but higher level spell, like Charm Monster.

Charm, then Hypnotism. That's permanent, but the target can't have too many Hit Dice. You can also put a Geas on the victim, or Modify Memory to make them remember that one time you took an arrow to the knee for them.

Or create a Simulacrum and then dispose of the original. And don't forget the value of a good Diplomacy of Bluff check.

And there-in lies the problem with spell casters trying to deal damage with the current rules. On top of the impact of most damage dealing spells being greatly reduced by the increased amount of Hit points everything has.
You have to deal with the fact that a lot of creatures have a 50/50 shot at resisting or at least reducing further the impact of your spells.
Pair that with the fact that your spells are a daily finite resource (as apposed to a melee character's weapon swings) and you can see how lopsided in favor of martial weapon based characters the game has become.

Personally since spells are a finite resource they should be doing more damage then melee attacks which are reusable every round all day. OR the Dc's of spells should scale better with the level of the caster to at least make them harder to resist.
