If this is legit, I don't understand why they're using Kickstarter and just don't submit a business plan to a bank and get a loan?

Hi Qstor/Mike - thanks for dropping by the forum!

Unfortunately, banks don't give loans to startup companies in general, and specifically they don't loan money for salaries. For a software project, almost all the money that gets spent is salaries. Loans are usually secured by real property, equipment or real estate. The most valuable asset in any software company walks out the door every day.

Kickstarter is a new way to bypass the classic chicken & egg problem: I have a great idea, but no money. Other people have money, but can't determine the great ideas from the turkeys. Kickstarter lets us show potential investors that a: real people really like this idea enough to put real money behind it, and b: when we finish the Technology Demo, we'll have shown that we've got the ability to plan and execute a software project (a skill that many folks who try to write games often lack).

Basically, the bank wants to be able to get some money back if you default on the loan. With material goods and property, they can petition to have those assets acquired, sold, or otherwise liquidated in order to recoup some of what they loaned you.

The bank can get nothing back from the employees you paid to write code, draw art work, etc.

@Ryan D- Wasn't speaking about you specifically, just a generalization.

I gave a donation too! How do we go about getting our "Goblin Squad" status?

After the Kickstarter closes, Amazon payments will process the actual payments; they tell us that can take up to two weeks as they retry cards that fail and such. Once we have a list of the people whose pledges were successfully charged, we'll connect it all up!

Awesome! Thanks for the reply! And how soon after that can we expect to receive the Thornkeep book? (Not trying to sound impatient, just excited! :D)

Not sure if it's 100% accurate, but the estimated delivery says October 2012.

Just doing some number crunching:
451 people made the $30 donation. For $20 more they could get a printed edition of Thornkeep. If they all decided they wanted to get this book it would put us up $9020 and about $15 k from our goal of $175.

For the 134 people that put in $5 for an extra $10 they could put us up $1340 and get a 100+ page mega PDF! Why wouldn't you spend $10 more to get that? If they decided to go for it and get the book that would be $6030 more dollars towards the goal.
619 people are getting the PDF already for their $15 donation. If they bumped up to a $50 donation that would be $21665!

As you can see we are not that far from getting the LESS than $25k we need to make the super sized 8.5"x11" book at over 100 pages a reality. It is important to bump up your donations sooner than later to help get those on the fence to smell the blood in the water and throw their support into the effort.

There is usually a surge in the last 48 hours! The closer we are the stronger the surge please join me in encouraging others to join the cause either by bumping up their existing donation or jumping into the ring with us for the first time!

We estimated October back when it was a 64-page book; it has expanded quite a bit in the last week or so, and at this point, November seems more likely. (We'd update the listing on Kickstarter, but it doesn't allow editing of reward levels once somebody has selected that award.)

My first kickstarter backed up! I'm with a few concerns, i backed 215, crowdforger pioneer + print megadungeon and international shipping, but in the choices i only get the crowdforger pioneer, will i get the printed books and the international shipping?

Goblin Squad Member

Once the kickstarter processes your choice Goblinworks will send you an email asking, among other things, you where the rest of the donation is to be applied. You will get to tell them then what it was you had in mind.

That is my understanding/
