PEACH pls: Dark Sun replaces Plane of Shadow.

Suggestions/House Rules/Homebrew

What would be needed to make Dark Sun's (original, not revised) world of Athas into a functioning plane of shadow? The idea just struck me last week and now I can't get it out of my head. Been reading the old source book and it seems that it would be a cool twist on the whole shadow plane thing. What am I missing?

For one, Dark Sun is completely cut off from planar cosmology. Two, that allows the dragon kings into your prime material, probably a very bad development.

The plane of Shadow is supposed to be a transitional plane, while Athas is supposed to be isolated and unconnected, this creates a slight thematic problem.

It would also change the dynamic of Athas entirely. Metal would be easy to get a hold of, as would other resources that are so precious there. It would also reopen connections to the gods, which are sundered from that world as well.

But do gods have to be allowed on the plane of shadow? How necessary is easy access to the plane anyway?

I think he means utilizing the dark sun standing rules applying, just replacing the shadow plane in planar location. I would say that it does have great merit, especially for your homebrew, since athas is a place of strife, suffering and just one level off from a normal world.

Unfortunately, (personal opinion here) the plane of shadow is a bleak, cold thing, drawing the essence of who you are like a winter wind steals the heat from your body. you have to become infused with the essence of the plane just to survive. The realm lives in a permanent level of darkness. I always imagine it variations of the stormiest of skies, or twilight, just after the sun's left the sky, or down to the pitch black of the darkest caves.

I would say that should athas fit as a plane, I think it would fit better among the hells, where that sort of thing fits thematically better in the sheer struggle of human life.

btw, I'm in the same boat as you. been drooling over my dark sun, spelljammer, and other old source books for content lately.

Yes, pretty much. At least seeing if it's tweakable. Rules-wise, what would have to be done?

Agreed. It would be a massive change of feel. Ravenloft would seem to be a better fit, but I'm not really feeling it. Dark Sun has bleak, has the environment against you. The sun is dark red. But yeah, massive change in feel.

I dunno....the hells does seem a better fit, but it also seems like a really obscure destination. I was thinking Inner Planes for awhile too, maybe as a deathgate-cycle style plane of fire.

There's a lot of good stuff out there. Been trying to keep things 3x/pathfinder for my cut-and-paste pastiche, but I'd really like to fit Dark Sun in there somehow, and it's the kind of place that really needs to be a planet or plane in itself. Maybe replacing Akiton with it, or splicing the two together, would be a better idea.....but then its in an obscure location again.

I think you'd be hard pressed to exchange it only on the fact that all of your 'shadow' monsters have their origin in the plane of shadow to some degree. I really couldn't see how they'd just drop into the dark sun environment. I would otherwise apply pathfinder stat changes and away I'd go. Your only problem then would be implementing psionics, maybe hamfist the 3.5 verson into it?

I can see something like changing descriptors for wherever a person looks to the sky, and say that it is a sourceless red light that waxes and wanes in a day cycle. The sky itself is pitch black, with a meager red haze as it falls to the horizon.

In similar circumstances I would not make Dark Sun Plane Of Shadow replacement as they have completely different themes and qualities, instead I would make it into another plane.

I assume that by replacing Plane Of Shadow you want it to be coterminous, desertified mirror of material world? Maybe some sort of the Last World - a wasted opposition of the First World?

Silver Crusade

Athas at twilight, same enviroment where just about EVERYTHING is dead. take the planes of onyx from Athas and you might have a good bit of insperation.
replace the killer heat with killer cold and twist some monsters up and you have a decent shadow plane.
