Rules for Coping with Afflicted Lycanthropy

Rules Questions

Hey there. I was working with my GM after my character was bit by a wererat and failed some saving throws. There is a strong chance that I will be effected in the coming days. We talked a little about he afflictions but noticed the rules only refer to becoming aware of the condition but nothing about controling or elimitating after the first few days.

We thought long term that I might take feats that would allow me more control over the affliction. Similar to the Kitsune racial feats. One to be able to control rat form. Another to be able to control hybrid form.

How have some of the rest of you handled the affliction. Basically we did not want it to basically become an awesome buff whenever I wanted. At least not without having to expense some resources to deal with it.

Do the bump.

The Exchange

A pc that murders people in blackouts is not a good pc. If you want a base for house rules check for similar prestige classes, similar in effects since none are wereanimal based.

Cage. Chains. Really, really heavy chains. Multiple layers. Administer Strength poisons to weaken you so that you have less chance of breaking free or killing someone when you change.

Have someone administer oil of taggit, drow poison, or (last resort) blue whinnis at regular intervals as you start to stir. Watch out for Constitution damage if you use blue whinnis.

For best results, use both of the above along with Strength poisons to keep you weak. Wear yourself out the night of your change so that you're fatigued (or, even better, exhausted). If the worst should happen and you get free, your party can beat you unconscious with nonlethal attacks.

Sovereign Court

If you want another saving throw you'll need to drink wolvesbane poison within 3 days of being infected and intentionally fail the first save to get another chance at the save vs Lycanthrope (and survive the remaining saves against the poison).

So drink poison (fail save) take 1d3 Con, then make Save vs Lycanthrope.

Yeah we have discussed alignment issues and I have will have to deal with this as it comes. Our take on is that murders durring blackouts are not morally cupable taking no action once I am aware will shift alignment. So I am likely looking forward to cages, chains and whatnot.

However not being the first character ever to get the affliction I wanted to know long term how GM's and players kept things going. I know there is at least one NPC in Andoran who is a werewolf but has control of it.

Long term, they don't have to keep things going much. Remove curse is only a 4th-level spell.

Be glad it isn't mummy rot. *shudder*

Here is the text from the PSRD:

"A creature that catches lycanthropy becomes an afflicted lycanthrope, but shows no symptoms (and does not gain any of the template's adjustments or abilities) until the night of the next full moon, when the victim involuntarily assumes animal form and forgets his or her own identity. The character remains in animal form until the next dawn and remembers nothing about the entire episode (or subsequent episodes) unless he makes a DC 20 Will save, in which case he becomes aware of his condition.

A remove disease or heal spell cast by a cleric of 12th level or higher cures the affliction, provided the character receives the spell within 3 days of the infecting lycanthrope's attack. Alternatively, consuming a dose of wolfsbane gives an afflicted lycanthrope a new Fortitude save to recover from lycanthropy."

I do not see where it says remove curse ends the affliction?

The Exchange

The affliction is HIV the curse is full blown aids. Thats all i can think of, Otherwise they wouldn't call it a curse. The listed ways remove the affliction before its a curse.

There are a number of curses that show no cure implying a simple remove curse deals with it. There are others that describe the +'s or -'s to how it exactly works. Mummy rot requires remove disease and remove curse. I would say that the absense of the explicit after three days remove curse is the only way to fix it would go a long way to clear things up.

I see your point GD but I could see it not working too (as does my GM).

My reading of the RAW:

  1. Remove curse explicitly states that it removes curses and lists rules for determining DC.
  2. Implication: if something is a curse and doesn't have specific text to the contrary (e.g., mummy rot), remove curse can remove it.
  3. Lycanthropy is defined as a curse in the PRD's glossary entry for "afflictions" and is referred to as a curse in each lycanthrope's Bestiary entry and in the Lycanthrope template text under "Curse of Lycanthropy". That is, lycanthropy is a curse.
  4. Therefore, Remove curse cures lycanthropy.

Hey I lived through being a werewolf. Every time I changed(not just on a full moon) my party did non lethal damage so I was shifted back to human form until it was over.

We are likely going to not let anything cure me after 3 days (which is the next full moon). So if I can get cured before then great. Otherwise there will be a new wererat in Korvosa. He is reworking a 3 level prestige class from a back issue of Kobold Quarterly. So I will have to deal with the affliction for awhile slowly gain control of it over time. It seems to me like it is going to be fun. He is house ruling a few things so that it is unique. I will let you all know how it works out.
