Cold Iron does what exactly

Rules Questions

is there a description of what Cold Iron actually does against demons?

It bypasses the damage reduction of most demons :)

Or did you mean something more descriptive? If so, I can't help you.

all I have is this here:

This iron, mined deep underground and known for its effectiveness against demons and fey creatures, is forged at a lower temperature to preserve its delicate properties.

Items without metal parts cannot be made from cold iron. An arrow could be made of cold iron, but a quarterstaff could not.

HP/inch 30

Hardness 10

Cost Weapons x2 normal. Add magic enhancement +2,000 gp.

Cost (Longer Wording) "Weapons made of cold iron cost twice as much to make as their normal counterparts. Also, adding any magical enhancements to a cold iron weapon increases its price by 2,000 gp. This increase is applied the first time the item is enhanced, not once per ability added. A double weapon with one cold iron half costs 50% more than normal."

It's not so much that it does something as that it is something.

Just like having a +1 weapon will bypass DR/magic, having a cold iron weapon will bypass DR/cold iron.

Many demons just happen to have DR/cold iron.

There is no description. You just need to look at various Demon and Fey monster stat blocks and see how many have DR that is overcome by cold iron. :)

Seems like most devils and demons have a dr/Good not cold iron

Aren't Fey also vulnerable to cold iron?

There's plenty of creatures out there that are CI, or "align OR CI", and at higher CRs "align AND CI"...

Well, cold iron isn't terribly expensive to have, is it? It's nice as a backup weapon or as your main if you can stomach the 2000 gp tax to enhance it and don't want adamantine. Getting a good aligned weapon is much more costly and difficult.

For a lot of weapons, it's adding like +15 or 20 gp to the cost, so getting a benefit just a few times makes it worthwhile. If you want get a dirt cheap weapon like dagger or sickle and make it cold iron as your backup weapon. Virtually neglibile cost.

Almost all demons (not devils) have DR/cold iron. From the Bestiary:

Babau: DR 10/cold iron or good
Balor: DR 15/cold iron and good
Dretch: DR 5/cold iron or good
Glabrezu: DR 10/good
Hezrou: DR 10/good
Marilith: DR 10/cold iron and good
Nabasu: DR 10/cold iron or good
Nalfeshnee: DR 10/good
Quasit: DR 5/cold iron or good
Shadow: DR 10/cold iron or good
Succubus: DR 10/cold iron or good
Vrock: DR 10/good

So: 4 of 12 demons only have DR/good. All the other demons have DR/cold iron, with good either an added requirement or a substitute requirement.

In most cases, a cold iron weapon is a cheaper alternative than a good-aligned weapon.

WIll do thanks We got our butt handed to us by a Hezrou in Serpents Skull this Weekend.. it is always a demon so my next character will be Prepared

SO a cold iron long sword + 1 ghost touched bane devils would be how much?

EDIT: Sorry way of topic I am at work so cant do the math now.

You can do evil outsider or lawful outsider bane (I suggest the former) but not devils specifically.

That is a +3 equivalent weapon w/ cold iron and masterwork so 18000 +300 +2000 = 20300 gp, plus 2x whatever the hell a normal longsword costs.

315 for masterwork longsword

x2 for cold iron is 630
2,000 for enchanting a cold iron weapon
-----------
2,630 before the magic prices

+1 bonus
+1 bonus equivalent for bane
+1 bonus equivalent for ghost touch
-----------
+3 bonus for pricing (18,000gp)

2,630
+ 18,000
---------
20,630gp

The masterwork cost is not doubled for cold iron.

Great,

ghosts and demons have been the most challenging I like how you fight a bunch of ghosts and demons and have real good magic weapons by level 8
i think +1 keen water is the best sword we have

Hm... It just says it costs twice as much to make. My interpretation would be that a non-masterwork cold iron longsword would cost 15x2=30gp, while a masterwork one would cost 315x2=630gp. Did I miss where it says the masterwork cost doesn't count when you double the price?

"Weapons made of cold iron cost twice as much to make as their normal counterparts."

"A masterwork weapon is a finely crafted version of a normal weapon."

"The masterwork quality adds 300 gp to the cost of a normal weapon..."

It would be cheaper to get one sword to use against ghosts, and another sword to use against demons.

The cold iron weapon wouldn't even need to be magical. A simple masterwork cold iron longsword does the job for only a few hundred gp :)

Reply ahhh but then I Couldn't give it a sweet name like shadowsbane or Demons doom or the ghost killa!
EDIT:
or AYO's Revenge (Ayokunle the Mysterious masked Mwangi Mauler being my previous character that was literally chewed to death by a demon and super frustrated at his inability to punch ghost because of their smugness )

I hear the best thing to do with ghosts is to punch them.

There's no reason you can't name a nonmagical weapon. History is full of such weapons, and some of them aren't even masterwork.

Also, sorry to hear about the death of the Ghost Punching Avenger. (Soon to be the Ghost Punching Avenged, I hope.)

A masterwork cord iron longsword is listed in the core rule book at 330gp. I see no reason to change it. And based on its example I think we can figure out the price of cold iron masterwork weapons in general.

Ah, well there you go then.

weapons cant have sweet names unless they are magical...an example is:

surrounded by orcs
guy 1: prepare to die fiends I have the Sword of orc slaying called in the elvish tongue "alandrill de Baca"

ORC: If that is a sweet Orc slaying sword why isn't it glowing?

Guy 1 :it doesn't glow it has a sweet name though so be warned!

Orc 2: (touching the blade) it doesn't burn my flesh are sure it is magical?

Guy 1: who said it magical it just kills orcs...

Orc 3: I though I Recognized it. That looks just like my sword here did Steve forge that you? he does a great job in fact I stole it off his corpse. he called his death dealer! lol
get him!

guy 1 Screams oh my face my sweet beautiful face!!!!! oh the humanity! if only i had an actual orc slaying sword it would completely make up for my lack of any Sword training!!!!!
