New Race! Nymph-half

Suggestions/House Rules/Homebrew

The Exchange

I've been working on creating this race for a while, inspired on the Nymph, the Baccae, the Siren, and others. It's still wrok in process.
So... check it out, what do you think? (And how many RP would you give it?)

Half-nymph (Version 3)

Racial Traits

• Medium: Half-nymphs are Medium creatures and have no bonuses or penalties due to their size.
• Normal Speed: Half-nymphs have a base speed of 30 feet.
• Low-Light Vision: Half-nymphs can see twice as far as humans in conditions of dim light.
• Nymph immunities: Half-nymphs are 75% immune to magic effects of sleep and charm, and 50% immune to lust effects.
• Unearthly grace: A half-nymph adds her Charisma modifier as a deflection bonus to her Armor Class and CMD if she wears no armor.
• Delicate figure: Half-nymphs are very beautiful but frail. +2 charisma, - 2 constitution.
• Charming gaze: At level 3, a half-nymph’s gaze can charm any creature meeting her gaze and within 30 feet. She can do this as a free action once per day. An affected creature can attempt a DC Will to resist the effects. If the save fails, the opponent acts as if affected by a charm person spell. A half-nymph can suppress this ability as a free action. The save DC is Charisma-based. For charming gaze to work, the creature affected must have eyes.
• Harmonious melody: Half-nymphs can sing a beautiful song that affects all non-nymph creatures within a 50-foot spread. This is done as a standard action. The song gives her a bonus of +1 on charisma checks against the creatures that listen to the song of all charisma based abilities including spells, skills, and nymph traits like unearthly grace and charming gaze. For harmonious melody to work, the creature must have ears. It’s a sonic effect and based on language.
• Beautiful voice: Half-nymphs add a +1 to “talked” usage of the bluff and diplomacy skills checks. (feint doesn’t count)
• Languages: Half-nymphs begin play speaking Common and Sylvan. Half-nymphs with high Intelligence scores can choose any languages they want (except for demonic languages like Abyssal).

First questions that I have are:

How does this 75% immunity to sleep and charm effects work?

How long does the Harmonious Melody work for?

Bonuses to AC from the monk class when not wearing armour I understand would stack with the deflection bonus, is this correct?

Otherwise it looks pretty nice to me

I would change
Nymph immunities: Half-nymphs are 75% immune to magic effects of sleep and charm, and 50% immune to lust effects.
to
Nymph resistances: Half-nymphs recieve a +2 racial bonus against sleep, charm, and lust spells and effects.

Is there any such thing as a lust effect, besides a single spell (which comes under compulsion effects anyway)?

Charming Gaze should probably work as Charm Monster rather than Charm Person. I'd also change the ability modifiers to +2 Charisma and no penalty, if the goal is to keep it in-line with other Pathfinder races. Or maybe +2 Wisdom +2 Charisma -2 Constitution, in keeping with their nymph parent's druidic abilities.

The Exchange

thanx for all your help! =) I will take this recomendations into consideration... and yes, I guess lust is just a single spell and the percentage system can be kinda confusing. Charm Monster it is then!
Thank you! =D

The Exchange

So I modified this race to make it more balanced, and I wanted your opinion. (my GM is really close to accepting her as a playable character race) I also added the RP (Racial Points) Paizo system at the end of each trait so you can judge it's level in contrast of the core races (all core races have TOTAL: 10 RP).

Here it goes =D

Half-nymph (Version 6)

Racial Traits

• Medium: Half-nymphs are Medium creatures and have no bonuses or penalties due to their size. (0 RP)
• Normal Speed: Half-nymphs have a base speed of 30 feet. (0 RP)
• Low-Light Vision: Half-nymphs can see twice as far as humans in conditions of dim light. (1 RP)
• Nymph immunities: Half-nymphs get a +2 racial saving throw bonus against enchantment spells and effects.(1 RP)
• Unearthly grace: A half-nymph adds her Charisma modifier as a deflection bonus to her Armor Class and CMD if she wears no armor. (RP 5)
• Delicate figure: Half-nymphs are beautiful and cunning, but they are also frail.
+2 charisma, +2 intelligence, - 2 constitution. (0 RP)
• Harmonious melody: Half-nymphs can sing a beautiful song 3 times per day that affects all non-nymph creatures within a 60-foot spread. This is done as a standard action. The song gives her a bonus of +1 on charisma checks against the creatures that listen to the song of all charisma based abilities including spells, skills, and nymph traits like unearthly grace and charming gaze. The effect lasts for one hour times the character level. Once a creature is affected by harmonious melody, it can’t be affected again for 24 hours. It’s a sonic effect and based on language. (2 RP)
• Beautiful voice: Half-nymphs add a +1 to “talked” usage of the bluff, perform, and diplomacy skills checks (feint and playing instruments don’t count). They also take a penalty of -2 on “talked” usage of intimidate checks. (1 RP)
• Languages: Half-nymphs begin play speaking Common and Sylvan. Half-nymphs with high Intelligence scores can choose any languages they want (except for demonic languages like Abyssal). (2 RP)
• TOTAL: 12 RP

Racial Feats

• Charming gaze:
o Meeting your beautiful eyes causes humanoid creatures the urge to assist you.
o Prerequisites: Cha 13, caster class, caster level 3, non-lawful.
o Benefits: A half-nymph’s gaze can charm any creature meeting her gaze and within 30 feet. She can do this as a free action once per day. An affected creature can attempt a DC Will to resist the effects. If the save fails, the opponent acts as if affected by a charm person spell. A half-nymph can suppress this ability as a free action. The save DC is Charisma-based.

Ironically, this sounds alot like certain ladies who chose to work in our plant. Whenever guys get within voice range of them, you can see their expressions change, they get....well, doofy. It's almost a visible exchange of blood from one brain to the 'other' one.

I don't see how this could be any different from a normal human (or whatever half you're planning) with high charisma and a charm person spell. Unless, of course you simply intend to go a different class and you want to stack racial diplomancy on top of whatever utility class you chose.

I would ask what's the true origin inciting this new race, instead of just playing it off background story and roleplaying.

Quick question; is a Half-Nymph a Humanoid or a Fey?

The Exchange

To Chengar Qordath, it counts as both for racial implications

The Exchange

Shadowmage, you just aswered your own question. The race is inspired in the investigation of nymphs, nereids, dryad, siren, fey (like baccae, and pixie), and others, both in the pathfinder monster book, and mythological reference sources. Also, inspired on my girlfriend XD

The original nymphs were minor godesses, the following heritage of the nymphs is far inferior. Still the half-nymphs are true to the nymphs heritage specially in beauty. Magic and magical inspiration comes natural to them, so they are able spell casters (gonna add some special feauters for favored class).

Maulium wrote:

The rules don't allow a race with two different types. Multiple subtypes is fine, but you only get one basic type.

Just look at the entries for every other half-race.

Shadow Lodge

I think my only problem with it, from a DM prospective, is that it is a 12 RP race. None of the playable races I allow are above 10 RP. I even nerfed aaismars and tieflings for play.

My fix for this would be to get rid of harmonious melody, which is a little overpowered in my opinion anyways.

Charming gaze is a race feat. Harmonious melody could be a race feat too.

Racial Feat

• Harmonious melody:
o A song passed among generations of nymphs that makes oponents regard you as more charismatic.
o Prerequisites: Cha 13, half-nymph.
o: Benefit: Half-nymphs can sing a beautiful song 3 times per day that affects all non-nymph creatures within a 60-foot spread. This is done as a standard action. I meant to say it counts as both "SUB-TYPES" for racial implications

I'd trade out "Haromonious Melody" and "Beautiful Voice" for one ability that gives +1 to Diplomacy checks and charm spells and effects.

My problem with it is unearthly grace. Removed it, half it, or switch with charming gaze. Even as a feat unearthly grace is super powerful.

• Unearthly grace: A half-nymph adds her Charisma modifier as a deflection bonus to her Armor Class and CMD if she wears no armor. (RP 5)

You can remove it, half it, or switch it for your own gaming if you want. I'm not removing it for my own gaming. Half-Nymph's are suposed to be incredibly beautiful, and they are also suposed to benefit from such beauty.

If you wish to use it, you can half it:
o A half-nymph adds "HALF" her Charisma modifier as a deflection bonus to her Armor Class and CMD if she wears no armor
OR
o A half-nymph adds her Charisma modifier as a deflection bonus to her Armor Class and CMD if she wears no armor. (+3 max)

If you remove this trait, she is as weak as a Griplli for a PC.

Also, view the Half-nymph from a narrative point of view. I know my female friends would enjoy feeling like beautiful divas! I can allready hear the self-content laughs of such roleplaying.

Evaluating the responses from last post, here is a new version with a little switch on the abilities and strenghts so she can be in line with core races:

Half-nymph (Version 7)

Racial Traits
• Medium: Half-nymphs are Medium creatures and have no bonuses or penalties due to their size. (0 RP)
• Normal Speed: Half-nymphs have a base speed of 30 feet. (0 RP)
• Low-Light Vision: Half-nymphs can see twice as far as humans in conditions of dim light. (1 RP)
• Nymph immunities: Half-nymphs get a +2 racial saving throw bonus against enchantment spells and effects.(1 RP)
• Unearthly grace: A half-nymph adds ½ of her Charisma modifier as a deflection bonus to her Armor Class and CMD if she wears no armor. (RP 5)
• Delicate figure: Half-nymphs are beautiful and cunning, but they are also frail.
+2 charisma, +2 intelligence, - 2 constitution. (0 RP)
(2 RP)
• TOTAL: 10 RP

Racial Feats
• Harmonious melody:
o A song passed among generations of nymph’s that makes opponents regard you as more charismatic.
o Prerequisites: Cha 13, half-nymph.
o Benefit: Half-nymphs can sing a beautiful song 3 times per day that affects all non-nymph creatures within a 60-foot spread.
• Charming gaze:
o Meeting your beautiful eyes causes humanoid creatures the urge to assist you.
o Prerequisites: Cha 13, caster class, caster level 3, non-lawful, half-nymph.
o Benefits: A half-nymph’s gaze can charm any creature meeting her gaze and within 30 feet. She can do this as a free action once per day. An affected creature can attempt a DC Will to resist the effects. If the save fails, the opponent acts as if affected by a charm person spell. A half-nymph can suppress this ability as a free action. The save DC is Charisma-based.

The Exchange

For your own gaming: you can remove the "harmonious melody" feat and the "beatufil voice" trait for "inspiring beauty"

Inspiring beaty: a trait that gives +1 to Diplomacy checks and charm spells and effects.

Where did you send me?

Very interesting. I like how it's not overpowered either.

The Exchange

I can't see it

Is this suggested as a base level race, or is there some level adjustment associated with it?

My concerns with this race would be as follows:

1/2 of a cha modifier added to AC for a race that has a +2 to cha and will likely start with a cha of 20, then add items to boost charisma will essentially mean armor that is comparable to plate armor that will stack with simple spells like mage armor and common AC items like amulets of natural armor. This seems a very powerful racial trait.

If the racial feats are bonus feats the character gets for free, I think they are too powerful. If they are feats the character can choose, they aren't too bad. However, a 3/day hour/level effect that boosts the character's primary abilities is a pretty strong feat.

Other than that, I like it.

the feats are to be chosen. Origonaly they where traits. I forgot to place the +5 maximum to unearthly grace XD sorry. It would go like this:

Unearthly grace: A half-nymph adds ½ of her Charisma modifier as a deflection bonus to her Armor Class and CMD if she wears no armor (+5 maximum.

Harmonious melody doesn't give a boost to the characters base charisma mod, but to the charisma checks to do spells and abillities and also unearthly grace. Also, its a sound effect. Easily denied by "silence" spells. Also, blows your cover when at stealth, plus uses as a standard action. Creatures without ears can't be affected. Vermin, oozes and other mindless can't be affected (also, they can't be affected by unearthly grace)

Never got a proper answer in the previous thread about whether this is a Humanoid or a Fey, so I'll ask it again.

Obviously whichever they are, they'd get a sub-type to reflect the other half of their heritage, but rules-wise there's a fair amount of difference between a Humanoid (nymph and subtypes) and a Fey (human and nymph subtypes).

This version seems very reasonable.

The half chr to AC won't be overpowered at low levels and at mid to high levels it will be a greatly enjoyed buff.

Charming gaze seems weak at first look, but it does duplicate a spell and scales the dc up. So it is good.

If you feel the race lost some of its beauty you could add the cantrip daze as a spell like ability useable 3 times a day. She is that beautiful.

Edit: I like it, I just like giving suggestions.

One nitpicky comment: Should a saving throw bonus be referred to as "Nymph immunities"? No immunity of any sort is mentioned in that line.

I'm play testing this race this Sunday with my GM. Also gonna do some playtest of my own! Feel free to playtest any version or adaptation of the half-nymph as you wish! I recomend using Version 7. Just a minor correction to "unearthly grace" (+5 deflection bonus to AC maximum)

Let us know. In some ways this reminds me of my druid's custom "elf/dryad" race, which we call a "drylf".

how bout using the greater defensive training? It gives you a flat +2 dodge bonus and only costs you 3 BP.
Now for the crazy idea, why not charm person 1/day to spend out your remaining 2 BP?

BP?
