Also if those jellyfish don't sting you the Great White Sharks or Saltwater Crocodiles will probably eat you.

Ow and those cute little wasps that lay eggs in your skin when you are lying on the beach.

Taipan? Only the most venemous snake in the world together with ocean snakes which ALSO come from Australia, coral devils, stone fish? Come to australia!

Yeah Australia sounds like the place to be! Every single animal wants to eat or kill you with poison lol.

But the best thing (really) is that games like Mortal Kombat and other such dirty games are banned there, but Miley Cyrus (which is much worse for your kids) is not.

Australia, australia the place to be for gays! (who are already scared for tiny little non-lethal spiders in other countries and catsharks) ;-)

J/K btw.

Well, this DOES sound like the Worldwound ;-)

Shoosh, will you keep quiet about that already?

Hey everybody:

Just wanted to mention how glad I am to have this thread, and all of you in it, as a part of my virtual life. It's really great to be able to come here, with news, or when I'm bored -- or when I need a break from the relentless pace of life. I always get what I need here. So thanks.

Sincerely,

I'm not sure if you're also calling me dull and predictable. :)

Moro,
I believe the words you are scrabbling desperately for are subtle and understated. I understand that not making every little thing blatantly obvious by hanging a neon sign around it shouting out "plot point" or thinking that talking in an obnoxiously loud voice is acceptable in standard conversation may well be somewhat foreign concepts to a blssted colonial American. However, to disparage the realm of Albion for your deficiencies, while understandable, is simply not acceptable. It's a wonder the Times hasn't published one of my strongly-worded letters yet. Nevertheless, you may be honoured to be included in the latest missive.

Oh, so 348 varieties of drizzle don't do it for you?

Plus, if you want to add a thrillingly random element to your life, go out for fast food and try to guess how many different species have contributed to your meal!

Not just fast food - lasagne as well!

Thanks Cheeseweasel!

Oh, haven't checked in awhile (I hid the thread while a certain conversation was going on and then decided to unhide it). So... I joined a choir that is LBGBTQS inclusive and focuses on themes of diversity in its song choices (although thankfully not cloyingly or anviliciously so). It is a lovely, very friendly group of people. Our winter concert is coming up soon so wish me luck!

That's wonderful Dame DQ.
Also, HI DQ!! enthusiastic waving

I was invited to Thanksgiving dinner as Cindy to several friends' homes. I declined for a variety of reasons, like distance. I am going to a friend's house as Bob.

One of my friends wanted me to meet his son who is questioning his sexuality. He wants to wear dresses too. I haven't seen this friend in over 20 years. I have never met his family. I'm still trying to figure this out myself. I don't think I'm the right person and I think Thanksgiving is probably not the best day to get into all of it.

What do you think?

I think talking over the net to a confused kid would be a good deed. Meeting should not be necessary, at least at first. It is difficult to find someone to talk to about it.

Hi Bob,

I agree Thanksgiving may not be the best venue for that. On a less intense occasion, however, it may help the young person to know that there are other trans* people out there, even if you don't have any advice per se.

Also, that choir seems like a lot of fun, DQ. I joined a choir in the spring, although it is not a LGBT choir. Still, a lot of the men are gay because, you know... it's a choir.

Anyway, choral singing is good for the spirit!

We have a concert coming up in December which has a lot of holiday themed music. But I am a sucker for that stuff :)

Bob, what Sissyl and Celestial Healer said. As long as you feel willing to do so, and I agree a family holiday is not the best time.

But that an old friend thought of you after all this time I think is a vote of confidence. I am sure if you haven't been close in awhile it was hard for them to ask. A lot of times a teen just needs someone to listen and answer questions honestly (including an honest answer of "I don't know"). Importantly, they need to know theybarw not alone, they are not a freak, so just meeting someone in similar circumstances to them can mean a lot.

of course if you feel very uncomfortable doing it, I'd understand you might not want to, but if so just thank the family for asking and explain your feelings on the matter.

As above, with a +1 to what dq said. Your friend must think highly of you to invite you in to speak to their kids on such a sensitive topic.

That's pretty much the thought process I was having. I'm going to see if I can meet up with them after the holidays. I work retail and I'm going to be exhausted through Christmas.

Actually, I'm of the opinion, in the case of a young transgender kid, that while thanksgiving isn't really ideal, it's better sooner than later. I didn't reach out to someone once and he or she committed suicide. We all assumed that he was gay or trans but I never found out. =( It was really sad and even though I had no way of knowing exactly what was going on(It was fairly obvious that there was SOMETHING going on) and didn't know them very well, I've always wondered if I could have done something to help. Even just knowing there was someone else out there with similar problems might have helped. He worked at the little bookstore I used to work, sole employee like me.

You don't have to explain anything to the kid or anything just be honest and let them know that if they need to talk, their dad knows how to get in touch with you and you can trade notes. =) It might bring something really nice into your life too. Most of us can use an ally like us to talk to. When I was transitioning and before I transitioned really around 25, I had a good friend who was an older drag queen that came out as transgendered late in her life and another young woman about my age who was a little more awkward than me(she was actually autistic, like her mother wrote a book about her being autistic back in the 80's) and they were both great help in my life. And I met a lot of cool people through them.

Life as a transitioning transgendered woman is tough, is all I'm saying and we often need each other even if we feel we're not worthy of whatever.

Silver Crusade Assistant Software Developer

Also, as a teen, I once snuck out to a meeting of transgendered women which ended up being a bunch of crossdressers who can hang their stuff up at the end of the day and have mostly normal lives. Not to say those guys didn't have something they felt was important to them but it's different when your core gender identity is different. That left a really bad taste in my mouth and that pretty much caused me to turn inward for a good 5 years before I finally had a bit of breakdown and needed to see a therapist.

I'm going to get in contact with them. I'm just going to wait until after the holidays. His parents are very supportive of him. He's in good hands. I haven't seen this friend since high school. I've never met his family before. I want to just spend time with them first and if his son wants to open up to me, that's great. I don't want him to feel like he must trust me just because his dad and I used to do our algebra homework together.

Have fun! Yes, I described the choir as "gay friendly" to someone and they replied, "Aren't they all?" It is a very nicely diverse group though.

Have fun with your concert!

Also, FHDM, hi, sorry I didn't respond earlier!

Hey Bob, are you going to the Ladies' Game Night holiday party tonight? Ashley's threatening to test-play something called "Car Lesbians," which could be either fun or headdesk-worthy, so I'm hoping to go. :-)

Have fun and try to avoid too much head trauma from head-desking.

Car lesbians sounds AWESOME!!!!!!!!!

Its like Cadillacs and dinosaurs....but with none of the latter and a lot of the former!

Sad news from Australia High Court throws out ACT's same-sex marriage laws.

The problem with the Australian Capital Territory (kind of equal to your DC) making the laws, is that marriage is according to the constitution is part of the Federal Governments portfolio so states & territories can not make changes to them.

So we have 3 years of idiots in charge before any change will be made.

Damn.

I really want to go but I have to work early in the morning. I work in a retail pharmacy so when close I get out I'm too tired to change and head out. If this was last week or next week I could try to find a way to go.

I have been so busy that I haven't even had time to really get much gaming time in. I've had to cancel my two regular games until January and we're struggling to get board game night going.

I really need to get out more.

On a positive note, I went out with my nails all glittered up for the holidays and only one person has said anything at all. She said that she loved them! My left pinky is red and my right one is green. They both have gold sparkle on them. The other fingers just had fine gold sparkle.

I've been going to work with my pinkies done all week. I don't like the gold sparkle by itself so I'm trying to come up with something more interesting.

I also have started dating someone! We've only gone on one date but she had a great time. We've been friends for about 8 years. Recently we've started hanging out more and I figured I should go for it. She said she had been waiting for me to ask her out! She ended the first date with a kiss.

She knows all about Cindy. I think she's a little unsure about it but she does seem willing to take the whole package. Bob and Cindy are a set. I'm going to ease her into things. I don't want to make her uncomfortable. Dating is awkward enough on its own sometimes.

I will bring her with me one of these days. She wants to go. She knows that it's a Cindy-night for me when I do go.

This month has quite literally been one of the best months I've had in years. I can't remember when I've been this happy. I know my life isn't all sadness but sometimes it feels like it. This month has washed it all away. I've still got 2 more weeks to go!

So I came out as gender queer to my two best friends, and apparently the guy of the two had happily accepted his crossdresser friend just a couple years before. They were nothing super supportive and welcoming and asked intelligent questions and it wasn't at all awkward once I finally got it all out of my mouth!

Good luck with your coming out DarthPinkHippo, might it goes at least as well as Bob's.

Here is a pretty good radio documentary on transgender punk singer Laura Jane Grace of Against Me! (The ! is part of the band's name.)

Narrated by Paris Lees (a trans journalist), it also includes interview snippets with other trans people, including some discussion of being genderqueer (about 46 minutes in), and a whole bunch of music.

It's only up streaming through Dec. 23rd, and not available for download outside the UK.

I found it to be pretty good, and a couple of the Against Me! songs about gender dysphoria that they include definitely struck a chord with me.

The blog where I first heard about this (Cheryl's Musings, a primarily sci fi focused blog by a British sci fi editor) pointed out: "The great significance here is that trans people are getting to tell their own stories on national radio. Previous coverage on radio and TV has all been a case of cis people interpreting the trans experience for a cis audience... In contrast, while Paris was happy to explain things along the way, she, Laura and Beth were also talking to trans people. "

Worth a listen, if you've got an hour to spare.
