Congrats megaPoet.
Congrats Hrothdane's GF.

On a different topic. The new policy for active duty members that identify as trans has come out. Still trying to figure out if this is a good thing or not. I mean; technically it counts as progress. Not only are we allowing trans members to serve, and serve openly, but we're actively adjusting policy to account for their presence in the military. But I have to say that watching the briefer from the Judge Advocate's office struggle uncomfortably through updating the Commander on the upcoming policy changes shows just how much farther we have to go.

Reading through the new policy, I can see how quite a few trans members of the military will still struggle while on active duty, even more so if going through transition. Lets be honest, who wants to have to get a medical review to be allowed to use the bathroom that matches their gender identity? And that is only after transitioning. Not every trans person wants to endure the difficulties of surgery. I don't know how to feel about the policy as it is being formed. Any trans military members willing to express an opinion?

Here's the new reg. DOD1300.28

I know American ex-military trans people who were pretty traumatised by their experience in the military, both being trans and being part of service in general. Their opinion is largely not very positive of the American military complex in its entirety, and this is not at all something they celebrate. They would rather the military just...not be.

But I should not really speak for them or experiences I have no first-hand experience of or can accurately convey second-handedly.

Suffice to say, the issue has even less meaning on me. Not American. But given that I am a 'filthy commie' or whatever I am equally not exactly jumping for joy. It's just an attempt putting more bodies through the war machine and I just happen to be a lot like some of those bodies now. Nothing has really changed, and war is as terrible as it ever will be.

And hell, seemingly, they haven't even gotten some of the basics right. *smh*

*sings* War, huh, good god, what is it good for?

Also congrats Mecha.

Reading this through from a cishet perspective who has a lot of family, friends, and associates who are military or ex-military:

My take on the language regarding medical review (per the general issuance instructions) is that

1. The leadership wants to keep the language regarding trans medical coverage the same as that used to mandate all other coverage. There are likely several reasons for this, not the least of which is to prevent anyone from finding grounds to deny a trans person medicine necessary for their transition.

2. They further want to ensure that anyone currently in the military, who now wishes to begin transition, receives some degree of counseling (as is generally suggested), a proper prescription for their meds from a military doctor, and that those doctors should have some leeway to adapt to advances in the field of medicine when prescribing any course of treatment based on their individual diagnosis. Likely there are other factors here, such as the exact hormones available in different deployment zones which would require the attention of military medical staff; there are likely other considerations here, which I'm not medically trained to know or discuss.

3. When someone enlists in the military, military doctors go back over their medical history and confirm diagnosis/perform tests to ensure there are no hidden conditions which might affect an enlistee's ability to serve. The language here is basically an extension to that general policy, and is likely intended to prevent anyone involved in that process from discriminating against an openly trans enlistee.

That's a pretty solid start; whether it's actually implemented that way or not is yet to be seen--if it's not then at least the "responsibilities" section provides trans persons grounds to pursue treatment by petitioning others in the chain-of-command. There's a lot of language under the "gender transition" section which basically says 'it's up to the service member to become familiar with their new gender role.' Reading through the material, it feels like this is motivated primarily from the institutionalized binary gender categorization which the military has used since the inclusion of women in America's armed forces. Just as there was a lot of institutional and organizational restructuring from that, which is still ongoing, I would imagine that there's a similar amount of restructuring necessary to accept non-binary or transitioning individuals. Further, they likely aren't comfortable creating any doctrines enforcing a particular gender role since that could be a used as a basis for discrimination by certain minded individuals. Ultimately one's experience of gender is highly personal, and while the current language doesn't feel inclusive enough, I think it's probably the best compromise anyone could come up with.

So basically, yeah I agree, deployed active-duty trans individuals are going to have a hard time under this. The good news is that when they're back home, or after they've left the service they're pretty much covered.

Well that is an interesting read. First off: 1) retired military. 2) trans-nontransitioning. 3) Prior to DADT, I had a gay roommate in the barracks. He could not suppress it enough and processed out; I was not, although "interviewd" cuz there were questions and doubts raised regarding my own status. Room tossed for evidence etc. [amazing how well panties/nylons compress and blend in with other clothes, but suspect the underage alcohol threw them off... ;-)]. 4) during DADT, I was not outed per se but people knew and others strongly suspected.

Reading the policy, big step in right direction. Trans members can present as their preferred gender off-base without ramifications. I would've loved that opportunity. Certainly, for those whose dysphoria is not so bad that medical transition is not required, the gender can be treated just the uniform. Put it on for military duty, shuck both of them off at end of shift without worry. "What happens off-base, stays off base."

No longer are gender nonbinary affectations (i.e. Sexual deviations) cause for discharge. Still waiting for retired/dependent medical Tr-care insurance to step up to plate. There is much delay and no coverage for any transgender issues mental, counseling or medical. So if member does not transition while in Military, the process will be self- financed in retirement or after separated. But that may change come 2017.

Still a big step. Glad to see progress. That is my take.

[edited to reflect TRI-Care insurance update]

The U.S. Navy is also apparently planning to have all personnel undergo training about the new transgender policies.

Bad judgment and lack of alternatives, old thing.

Not an expert on youtube, but... Because you may have searched for his clips before? I mean, we don't just look at things we like?

And perspective helps. A certain song from South Korea has billions of viewers.

This happened to me, along with Sargon of Akkad and some other bizarre alt-righty/misogynistic ranters, because I go on a site that criticises these people (wehuntedthemammoth.com) and viewed some videos there...

Having said that, YouTube is weird. Try searching for beard-care tips, and within three clicks, you're up against somebody claiming that bikinis are a tool of the Illuminati.

I knew Lurky Longears was going to be useful.

Hah! Speaking customer service rep discussing important financial stuff, near the end instead of shunting me to a typical automated survey, she had to do it manually. Eventually we get to population identity: hispanic, latino, native, etc, no problem. She asked about my gender, male or female. I paused. Hemmed and hawed. Then decided yeah, "is there a third option of Trans?" Then she paused. Then made the notation. Not sure if she just put male or female regardless of my statement. But we have to get counted one way or another. No longer invisible and ignored.

Yeah yeah I know. Choose a side some will say. Eh.
I chuckled about their survey. Standing up for the middle! Yay us!

To comment quickly on the military post: I make no excuses for how people have been treated in the past. Many groups have served with distinction that was not recognized (at a minimum formally) for far too long.

However the military is downsizing now. The military is removing people for every reason it can find.

So to deliver the charge that it's just a way to get more bodies into the 'war machine' is grossly unfair, inaccurate, and untrue.

To be brutually honest It would be easier to not address this issue at this time. That would keep those that attack any progress off the military's back, and allow a convenient (if wrong) reason to remove people or prevent them from joining in the first place

So I'm thinking about Halloween costumes and I have a few ideas running through my head. I ran them by my friend and this is the exchange she had with her 4-year-old daughter:

Quote:
So I told Abigail you were trying to decide what to be for Halloween and said she's gonna be a princess I said will Bob is thinking about being a princess too. At first she said you should be a storm trooper with no mask I told her you don't want to be a storm trooper. Then she said you should be a Seawalk. It's an Ewok that lives under the sea. And then decided since Disney own Star Wars now Ariel and an Ewok had a baby and it's a Seawalk

So I am torn, should I be what I want or should I try and be what she wants. I like the idea of a seawok. I'm way too tall (over 6 feet), but it's actually a really neat idea.

Something I discovered thanks to this thread is that gender, whether as identity, inclination or anything else, is a continuum even if it has 2 strong poles

I never realized it before coming here and I want to thank you all for this

Well.

So I finally talked with the guy, aired out my frustrations rather cleanly, and we agreed to make plans to see a movie.

That was supposed to be going down tonight, and then 2 HOURS before showtime, he texts me and says that he can't make it, a relative suddenly came down ill and is in the hospital.

It's Bi Day, cam't something nice happen for me this once?

Posting another part of my journey, confidence booster and owning it. I am out to my girlfriend, have been ever since we started getting serious. She doesn't care, fully supportive and affirming. Wow. So much unsaid here, but it truly feels like I have hit the jackpot.
Went to pick her up at airport presenting MTF as well as possible. No fashion police, no angry pitchforked mobs, no snide commentary that I heard from the crowd awaiting loved ones disembarking. She got off plane, picked me out of crowd, (already above avg size as a male, much moreso as female), didn't blink an eye and greeted me accordingly. She loved my skirt, threatening to steal it later. (Rogue level 1, non-chalant thuggery trait)

While I have been out and about previous, first in a such a large interactive crowd through many public spaces. First time my GF encountered me as me in a public arena with others watching. Litmus test of sorts. She didnt run off screaming into the horizon...

Guess I should keep her around, huh?

Huh. I'm not a huge comics person, but I'm personally glad about this, whether or not I'm a comics geek.

Although, notwithstanding the Hercules fiasco (which kinda makes me a bit angry, since it fit thematically with his character's flavor), I don't remember if Marvel has a bi character or not. What I do remember, however, is that they have a transgender character in a lesbian relationship with a former member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and that I am suuuuper happy about.

Huh. Well I do know that the biggest power couple in Marvel lore is currently Wiccan (the son of Vision and Scarlet Witch) and Hulkling (Son of the original Captain Marv-ell and some Skrull Princess.)

Marvel has Iceman. I'm sure there are others who are bi. I would be more interested in seeing bi men than bi women. Bi men get such a bad rap from society, especially from the LGBT community. I would love to see us get more recognition.

Deadpool is confirmed pan iirc.

Prodigy & Shatterstar are confirmed bi.

still can't see it...But that may be because i already have him married to the cuckoos in my headcanon. But hey, if he's bi, he's bi.

Free,

He's bi. The cuckoos however aren't married (at least not that I'm aware of) in any reality.

Slight change of topic, I spent a good part of the evening with a very supportive friend, her fiance, and her eldest son (he's 17). They were very eager to meet my feminine side. They made every effort to call me Cindy. It was very relaxing. I just wish I had the time to deal with the 5 o'clock shadow I had at the time...
