I personally tend to play mostly male characters and their sexuality depends on the group. My characters will either be "uninterested in anybody, to avoid rustling any jimmies" or openly gay/bi, if the group is accepting of that sort of thing. I sometimes play female characters and whenever I do, their sexuality is often one of the last things I nail down (and often remains ambiguous).

Whenever I do an openly gay/bi character, he tends to have some sort of "ex-boyfriend he never got over" or "impossible guy he quietly pines over" in his backstory to assuage the straight dudes that my character won't be hitting on theirs. And now I'm realising that I tend to make that NPC be in another country (or at least city) so that it's unlikely the backstory will ever be resolved.

It's certainly interesting how one tends to subconsciously accommodate for straight people. I've never heard of someone playing an openly gay/bi character who actually has an "on-screen" same-sex romance, unless it's a mostly-LGBTQ+ group. Most of my fellow LGBTQ+ gamers either don't play gay/bi characters at all or just do similar things to what I outlined. :-/

(On a side note-- why do so many PCs have dead parents/siblings/lovers in their backstories? I'm guilty of it too!

Everyone has or had parents and it's an easy/lazy way of explaining them away so that you don't need to interact with them. Otherwise why don't you ever visit them or ask them for help or go and help them? They're also not at risk of becoming GM plot device.

Rae's parents are still alive, but he almost wishes they *weren't*. The *other* reason he's out adventuring was because they kept trying to set him up with women from other families and he can't *stand* Taldan women for the most part.

Which makes for a very interesting possible future path, as he's earned the positive attentions of the Blackros clan (need to save quite a few more Prestige for it and another thing).

Freedom/detachment from social bonds, easy (dare we say cliche?) backstory, freedom from a personal vulnerability, avoiding need to devise close family.

Fewer things for the DM to use against you.

A simpler backstory. Traditional (though not ubiquitous) in the genre. Leaves the character free to take any plot hooks the GM throws his way.

*slaps the side of his head* "Stop it, Brain. Stop it."

All day I've had this idea of an Asexual character (gender pending, along with most of the other stuff, too) that is pan-universally Attractive. Women want them, Men want them, and.. they don't want anyone 'that way'.

Opinions? Is that too hard to implement in play?

It depends on the DM. If the DM decides that everyone in their world is attracted to the character...yes...if the DM doesn't go along with it...no.

Bad answer...but I think it really will depend on the DM on whether that works or not.

However, it sounds a lot like Captain Jack?

Except he's about the exact opposite of asexual.

That *miggggghhht* be part of the inspiration?

It depends on GM. Some might not want to have many NPCs interested in the character in that way in the first place making it informed attribute (like bisexuality of my longest played character).

It would definitely require serious GM buy-in, particularly since it is contrary to human experience. Sexual orientation is not blood type; there is no O-negative. But in a fantasy world, stranger things have happened. You may just need a supernatural explanation for it.

I am also reminded of the asari from the Mass Effect series.

@Celestial: Clarification Requested, please.

Are you saying that there's no such orientation as asexual (lacking sexual desires) with that comment?

Never played Mass Effect, know a little bit by cultural osmosis and the occasional wiki-dive to try and figure out what folks were talking about. That's a pretty interesting idea.

While not CH, I assume what he was referring to was the "pan-universally attractive" aspect. There is no one appearance which everyone will find attractive.

Silver Crusade

What Lord Synos said. It wasn't a commentary on asexual folk. I was referring to O negative as the universal donor - somebody who is appealing to everybody. It doesn't really work that way in real life, but may have a place in a fantasy world.

Pathfinder Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

Thank you for the clarification!

About the closest I've seen in any game for a descriptor is 'Platonic Ideal' in an Aberrant write-up?

That being said, just putting it out there as 'pretty/handsome' will shut down half of a given audience, and there's a definite weight on play for 'doing not saying' which is hard to convey in 'open' play...

Thanks for the feedback, will go to the bin for future home games...

Dark Archive

I don't linger too much on PCs' sexual orientation, if only because I do almost all of my play in Pathfinder Society. Romance roleplay doesn't really come up =/. There's one I know pretty firmly is pansexual, but there's never been a place I felt it appropriate to come up. The handful of ideas I have for characters with explicitly queer orientations are all very much better utilized in home games (two because I'd want to be able to role-play them out, the third because Society is generally a "family friendly" environment and I foresee the PC being pretty licentious in his approaches on the matter.).

I've never given too much thought to their gender identity outside of how it fits into cultural expressions of gender. I do want to play a Vigilante who is genderfluid/nonbinary, with one identity being masculine centered and the other being feminine centered (but still very much challenging ideas of what may be considered masc/femme). But, again, Society is not the best format for roleplay, which makes Vigilante difficult as it is very rooted in role-play dynamics.

tl;dr I have ones I want to play/play out further, but don't play in home games much (usually run them).

Also-We now have a whole set of Iridian Fold oriented teamwork feats from Distant Shores, as a side note for folks looking for LGB character concepts.

Actually, a vigilante might actually work for that. Since the two identities are part of the class mechanic with distinct abilities, you might switch between them and make it pretty obvious. That said, having played a playtest vigilante in PFS, I'm not sure it's a great class mechanic for PFS generally. At least not the playtest version.

Pathfinder Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

I would have to agree, as much as I don't want to. I played a Zealot version and it was just... well... I don't see how the class can work in a PFS setting.

We played the Confirmation with *all* vigilantes... While it was silly fun at points, it was also... Very rough.

Queer fantasy serial that began on Wednesday

Available as pdf, epub, some other e-book format I don't use, and as audio.

Also: The first part is awesome!

Yeah, I have no doubt Vigilante itself wouldn't work...its that I wouldn't be able to make Vigilante work well in Society. Like, I'd love to play a Vigilante in Hell's Rebels like this (as one example).

Bad news from Houston. The HERO ordinance, which would have guaranteed a bunch of LGBT protections, was defeated on Tuesday, largely due to fear-mongering over trans people in bathrooms.

Visiting family in Houston in a few weeks. Really disappointed.

And here in Wisconsin, proposed legislation in targeting trans high school students.

Oy.

So, Crystal and I went to Universal Studios this week and we had a lot of fun, but one of the coolest things that happened was when we went to Ollivanders at Harry Potter World. We were chosen for the wand ceremony! We came in last and were right in the middle and they called us both up and asked if we were friends or sisters and we told him that we were married and he didn't bat an eye. Lots of children and no grumbles but after having to perform for the others gathered there I had a hard time seeing anyone else. ^_^ It was a neat experience and we swapped wands at the end because twin phoenix feathers and then the light came on us and the fans blew and it was neat. Goofy, I know, but a fun little bit of together time. ^_^

Sounds like a great time Lissa!

I'm just as disappointed as you, KSF. Fear is such an overriding emotion, especially when you perceive (whether legitimately or in this case, falsely) that your loved ones are threatened. But that's the sad state of the world we live in right now. Fear is the great motivator for everything we, as a society does.

As a pre-hormone trans woman, it scares me to take the journey ahead knowing the amount of discrimination, vitriol, and disgust that I may face. I read about it every time I read other trans persons' stories. The struggle is real. But at the same time, I know that there are those who support and invest love in the trans community. So thank you to those who advocate for us and offer their love ^.^

The insanely deep-rooted concern is couched in terms of binary gender reference.

The concern being, as strange as it might sound, that an individual of a given gender will not be able to control themselves in the presence of the opposite gender.

...which is the same reasoning that particular faiths use for head-coverings, body-coverings, separate living spaces, etc for individuals on opposite sides of an arbitrary 'gender' line.

I'm not directly impacted by some of these gender-repressive laws, but an argument could also be made (depending on how restrictive the law is) that an individual that *really NEEDS TO GO* would be prevented from using the (traditional opposite) gender's restroom if the 'proper' restroom is unavailable (in use, damaged/broken, not present).

Curious to see how THAT is addressed in the more repressive codes.

Also, Lissa, as a non-Potter follower (I know, HERESY!) I missed most of your references, but it was awesome that there wasn't a moment of 'dead air' or stupid. Grats on having a great experience!

It's getting better. When I transitioned, there weren't nearly as many resources as are available today. There was pretty much no hope of insurance paying for anything. Heck, at this point, we're the hip new fad. Everyone wants a transperson in their pocket.

Last night, since I'm going to a new school next year, I went to the school showcase.

It was awesome, not only due to the fact that the school was awesome, but it is one of the most accepting of the LGBT community in the state. Frell, even two Queens got elected for the homecoming this year. Two Queens! Amazing, right?

Not only that, but I had the good fortune to sit next to another transperson during the opening assembly. We hit it off immediately. Superwholock? Yes. Tabletop RPG fan? Yes. Freak and weirdo, just like me? Yes. Taste in music? Same. Doesn't exactly conform to transgender stereotypes? Yes. (He was asexual [although not aromantic], I'm lesbian.] I even got his number at the end of it.

Sad part of it, though, is that he only has one bit of support at home, so I offered to let him come to my house if he ever wants to hang out and be himself.

Great night, though.

Even if only one thousand out of the millions of LGB people out there are signing this (and there's a decent chance some of the signers aren't LGB at all), that's a thousand too many.

Huh. I'm going to go headbutt the wall now.

For this particular campaign, I'm sure there are cishet people signing just to be jerks.

But there's a long history of cis gay people participating in the oppression and erasure of bisexual, transgender, asexual, and intersex people, to give an inexhaustive list.

I don't doubt the possibility of gay people signing, or even starting that campaign... but if we're discussing likelihood, my guess would be "intolerant morons pretending to be gay".

No... but I too would find it "beat-head-against-wall"-worthy if it really was gays that started it. Sure, could happen, but people pretending to be gay and hating trans people seems more likely to me.

Isn't it strange
Feels like the whole world's in error
What would people say
If only they knew I was

There on the Internet late one night
They took some code and mushed it up and so I can say

I think I'm a troll now
Because there's always something to put down
I think I'm a troll now
And everyone thinks I'm not clowning around
