Monk for CotCT

Curse of the Crimson Throne

The Exchange

I am preparing myself for going into a Curse of the Crimson Throne game for the Saturday after this(21st) and I am having trouble deciding where I want to put my stats.

We will be starting halfway through book 2, so If you can fill me in on anything without spoilers, that would be nice.

The GM stated that we would roll 4d6, drop the lowest, and reroll if it was less than 9. We would also be given a free 18. I rolled going from lowest to highest:
9
15
15
16
16
and the given 18.

The rest of the party includes a Rogue going Shadowdancer, a Summoner who may or maynot be joining us, and 1 or 2 unknowns at this point in time.

With the given information, I decided that a Melee character would be nice. Because of how I rolled, I thought Monk going Low Templar would be good, since its a great PrC that makes anything an upfront fighter/ flanking buddy. I will be the Rogue/Shadowdancer's Bestest buddy, in my opinion.

The part that I have not decided yet is where I should put the Stats, or spend the money that my character starts with(not to mention Gender, but I digress). We are starting at level 5 with 12,500 Gold. I am thinking that an Amulet of Mighty Fists would be the first big thing to buy, but those Armor Bracers seem really nice. I also don't know if I should take an Archetype or not, since I will only be in the class for 5 forseeable levels.

Thankyou in advance for your advice!

Anyone?

My recommendation would be Sohei Monk because it would mesh really well with the Low Templar in that the Sohei is designed to be a mounted monk that wields weapons, and the Low Templer is, basically, a mounted knight that fights dirty.

Honestly, with the Leadership abilities that the Low Templar gets, I would suggest the following stats:

18 Str
16 Dex
16 Con
9 Int
15 Wis
15 Cha

Monks will have sufficient skills to get you what you need to make it into the Prc, and Cha is normally used as a dump stat for a Monk, but since you are planning on taking Low Templar, which has some Cha abilities in Leadership, I don't see dumping that stat to be a good idea.

I would suggest that you actually take 6 levels of Sohei Monk before taking the Low Templar Prc. The reason being, that you will gain the Weapon Training feature if you do take Sohei and gain +1 to hit and damage with your chosen weapon group.

Now, the above assumes you will be using a weapon (as Low Templar requires Weapon Focus in a martial weapon, and unarmed strike is considered a simple weapon). If you do decide to go the weapon route, then I would advise against an Amulet of Mighty Fist as the amulet is very expensive and will eat up roughly half of your available funds. For that +1 amulet (5,000 gp) you could purchase a +1 weapon (2,300 and change) and +2 bracers (4,000 gp) for almost the same price. Something you might do, is forgo your fast movement, wisdom and monk ac bonus, and simply wear armor. This might be best for you as your Monk AC bonus and fast movement won't be that high, so you'll probably be better off wearing armor, than not wearing armor.

Argh, real life is calling now, or I'd post other suggestions. But that's my advice so far.

[Edit] Also, I'd suggest starting this same thread up in the Advice section as you'll get a lot more replies on build advice.
