RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

I want to work on a viable, pathfinderized version of the Truenamer, a skill-based magic-user from the 3.5 Tome of Magic.

This is the basic framework I'm thinking of using:

Pathfinder Truenamer

BAB: +3/4
Good Saves: Will
Hit Dice: 1d8

Class Skills: Craft, Diplomacy, Knowledge (all), Linguistics, Perform (oratory), Profession, Spellcraft, Use Magic Device.

Skill Ranks Per Level: 4 + Int modifier.

Truenamers are proficient in all Simple Weapons, and Light Armor.

LEVEL ABILITY
1. Known Personal Truename, Lexicon, Whispers
2. Knowledge Focus, Secret Truth
3. Whisper
4. Secret Truth
5. Lexicon
6. Knowledge Focus, Secret Truth
7. Whisper
8. Secret Truth
9. Lexicon
10. Knowledge Focus, Secret Truth
11. Whisper
12. Secret Truth
13. Lexicon
14. Knowledge Focus, Secret Truth
15. Whisper
16. Secret Truth
17. Lexicon
18. Knowledge Focus, Secret Truth
19. Whisper
20. Say My Name And I Am There, Secret Truth

The primary mechanic will be a Linguistics skill check with a DC of 15 + the CR of targeted creature.

The original version had 3 Lexicons: One for creatures, one for objects, and one for locations. I want to expand on this. I want one lexicon to focus on commanding and controlling (and possibly changing) creatures through the use of truenames. I'm Elizabeth Bear's "Blood and Iron" and "Whiskey and Water" novels as inspiration. Some creature types might be more vulnerable to truename manipulation, like fey and outsiders, particularly demons and devils.

We also need to design a lot more utterances. I want all of them to be reversible. I think I might make a rule where you learn 1 utterance per rank in Linguistics you have, and then create an alternate rule (or Secret Truth?) that lets a character spend additional skill points to learn additional utterances.

Maybe a similar system using Knowledge ranks to learn the truenames of fey, devils, etc. by selecting the appropriate skill (nature, planes, etc.). Abberations might have extra-hard truenames.

Lexicon ideas:

1. One that compels the actions of living creatures, especially if you know their personal truename.
2. One that affects the physical bodies of living creatures.
3. One that affects objects, tools, weapons, armor, etc.
4. One that affects places, travel, destinations, locales.
5. One that affects the passage of time.
6. One that affects the magic of others or magical items.

All utterances will be reversible, so each utterance will be a buff and de-buff.

I'm not sure if I want 9 levels of utterances like primary casters, 6 levels like bards, inquisitors, and maguses/magi, or some other method of power level determination.

Known Personal Truename (Ex): The truenamer knows his own personal truename.

Lexicon (Sp): At 1st level, the truenamer selects one lexicon. He can learn utterances from his selected lexicon. At 5th level, and every 4 levels thereafter, the truenamer may select an additional lexicon and gains the ability to learn utterances from his selected lexicons.

Utterances (Sp): At 1st level, the truenamer gains the ability to use the Linguistics skill to speak utterances, spell-like abilities with verbal components that use true speech to alter reality to the will of the truenamer. At 1st level, the truenamer learns 1 utterance from his selected lexicon; he learns 1 additional utterance at 2nd level and every level thereafter. The save DCs of the truenamer’s utterances are 10 + ½ the truenamer’s level + the truenamer’s Charisma modifier.

Whispers (Sp): Whispers are minor spell-like abilities the truenamer learns to utter. The Linguistics DC to utter a whisper is 10 + 1 per previous usage of the whisper. At 1st level, the truenamer selects 3 whispers. At 3rd level, and every 4 levels thereafter, he learns an additional whisper.

Knowledge Focus (Ex): At 2nd level, the truenamer selects a specific Knowledge skill and gains a +3 bonus on the selected Knowledge skill. At 6th level, and every 4 levels thereafter, the truenamer may select the same Knowledge skill or a different Knowledge skill and gain an additional +3 bonus to the selected Knowledge skill.

Secret Truth (Ex, Sp, or Su): At 2nd level, and every 2 levels thereafter, the truenamer selects one of the following abilities.

Secret Truths:

Concord of Words (Sp): The truenamer learns to work together with other truenamers and increase the potency of their Utterances. Two or more truenamers with this secret truth can choose to target the same opponent with the same Utterance, and use their Concord of Words ability. The opponent makes a single save against the Utterance, using the Save DC of the truenamer with the highest Save DC and increasing this Save DC by 1 for each truenamer that is assisting him. A truenamer must succeed on the Linguistics check of the target creature to assist the other truenamers using the Concord of Words ability.

Greater Concord of Words (Sp): When using his Concord of Words ability, the truenamer increases the caster level of the utterance he is assisting to speak by +1. The truenamer must have the Concord of Words and Improved Concord of Words secret truths before selecting this secret truth.

Greater Speak Unto the Masses (Ex): When the truenamer speaks an utterance that normally affects a single target, he may choose to select any number of targets. All targets of the truenamer’s utterance must be of the same creature type. The truenamer must have the Speak Unto the Masses and Improved Speak Unto the Masses secret truths before selecting this secret truth.

Hidden Personal Truename (Su): The DC to learn your personal Truename is increased by an amount equal to your Charisma modifier.

Improved Concord of Words (Sp): When using his Concord of Words ability, the truenamer may use a move action to use the aid another action to grant his allies a +2 bonus on the Linguistics skill check made to speak the Utterance. The truenamer must have the Concord of Words secret truth before selecting this secret truth.

Improved Speak Unto the Masses (Ex): When the truenamer speaks an utterance that normally affects a single target, he may choose to select a number targets equal to his level. All targets of the truenamer’s utterance must be of the same creature type.
The truenamer must have the Speak Unto the Masses secret truth before selecting this secret truth.

Meta-Speech (Ex): The truenamer learns a bonus meta-speech feat. This secret truth may be selected multiple times; each time it is, the truenamer selects a different meta-speech feat.

Personal Truename Mastery (Ex). When attempting to speak his own truename, the truenamer adds his Charisma bonus, if any, to the Linguistics skill check.

Recitation (Ex): The truenamer learns a bonus recitation feat. This secret truth may be selected multiple times; each time it is, the truenamer selects a different recitation feat.

Rumormonger (Ex): The truenamer adds half his level to Bluff skill checks made to pass along a secret message, Diplomacy skill checks made to gather information, and Sense Motive skill checks to discern a secret message.

Say My Name And I Am There (Sp). The truenamer creates a special truename (not his actual truename, but a true nickname) that he can share with others. If they speak it, the truenamer is aware of who said it and where they are and may choose to transport himself there as if using a word of recall spell. The truenamer must be at least 16th level to select this secret truth.

See the Named (Sp): A number of times per day equal to his Intelligence modifier, the truenamer can speak a creature’s truename and see the creature, as if using scrying for a number of rounds equal to his Intelligence modifier. The truenamer must be at least 8th level to select this secret truth.

Sending (Sp): A number of times per day equal to his Intelligence bonus, the truenamer can use an effect identical to the sending spell by making a successful Linguistics skill check with a DC of 15 + the target's CR. The truenamer must be at least 10th level to select this secret truth.

Speak Unto the Masses (Ex): When the truenamer speaks an utterance that normally affects a single target, he may choose to select a number targets equal to his Charisma modifier (minimum 2). All targets of the truenamer’s utterance must be of the same creature type.

Speak Unto The Myriad Masses (Ex): When the truenamer uses an utterance to affect multiple targets, they may be of multiple, different creature types. The truenamer must select Speak Unto the Masses before selecting this secret truth.

Truename Research (Ex): The truenamer gains a +4 bonus on Knowledge checks to learn the truename of a creature.

Truename Scholar (Ex): The truenamer learns the truename of 1 creature for each rank in each Knowledge skill he gains. The selected creature must be a creature type associated with the appropriate Knowledge skill. The creature selected cannot have a CR exceeding the number of ranks the truenamer has in the associated Knowledge skill. A truenamer with multiple Knowledge skills may learn the names of multiple creatures each time he increases the number of ranks in his Knowledge skills, one creature per each different Knowledge skill. The truenamer must have the Truename Research secret truth before selecting this secret truth.

So far, so good Smilo Dan. For utterances, are you still planning on having the three laws of resistance?

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

Yeah, I plan on using the Law of Resistance and the Law of Sequence.

Qadira

I want more! Pathfinder and SmiloDan are perfect parents for the raising of this tricky kid into a successful adult class.

Make sure each lexicon has at least one utterance that players will hunger for, like fireball for arcane casters.

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

The big challenge will be creating utterances for all the lexicons. Even if lexicons only have 6 levels, there should be at least 5 or 6 per level, and at least 5 lexicons. That 150+ utterances!!!

I'm gonna need a little help.

Qadira

Well then... utterances by me to follow. I can't wait to imagine all of the reversible effects to what madness I come up with.

Your six lexicons are wonderful, by the by, and I'm going to stick by them.

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

Cool! Can't wait to see what you come up with!

dotting for interest

Threadmancy!

Did you forget about this?
Sorry but your ideas are so dang good for this class.
