For the GM - Will-o'-Wisps

Beginner Box

Sovereign Court

One of the really useful monsters in the Beginners Box is the will-o'-wisp. You can literally have one follow the PC's from the very beginning of their adventures and use it in some great ways. I recently wrote an article to give you some idea how to use this creature, check it out: Feast of Fear - A Campaign Hook

Let me know what you think.

Shadow Lodge

I really enjoyed your article. Well done, Cap'n! I'm definitely going to try out your "Will o' Wisp as NPC" idea, though I'll have to wait awhile since I did something similar in an adventure not too long ago.

A pale cobalt light manifests in Sandpoint's town square every night of the new moon, passing through the streets on its way out of town. Those curious onlookers who have observed its passing have reported it wandering through fields, across a small steam, and up to the top of a nearby plateau, where it hovers, unmoving, over a stone platform until dawn's first light touches the eastern horizon.

The light, which is not quite a Will o' Wisp but uses the same stats, served as both a guide and helpful NPC in the adventure, as he was the ghost of a slain adventurer cleric.
