Kitsune race still not pathfinder legal?

I'm starting a new character on the 1st of April at a local pathfinder society and I just wanted to confirm that by that date the Kitsune from Tian races would still not be a legal choice for me. Can someone confirm or deny this sad knowledge please?

While I can't confirm with the weight of the campaign staff, I can tell you with 99% certainty that this will remain the case.

Alternate races to the ones in the Core Rulebook are sometimes available through special boons that you can win at conventions - but that's about it. And as far as I know, the only races available through such boons so far have been Tengu, Aasimars, and Tieflings.

I can guarantee that by April 1st, there will be no new playable races made available.

There have also been Dhampirs, Sylphs, Oreads, Ifrits, and Undines. Those have all been phased out, along with the tieflings, and are currently not available to obtain via a Chronicle sheet as a convention boon. I am currently sending out Tengus and assimars as convention boons. There may or may not be different races offered at Gen Con.

Thanks so human it is and hopefully if the Kitsune ever become avaiable I'll find out about and be able to take advantage of it.

Liam,

Dont worry about it. Read in between the words Mike said "by April 1st" advanced race guide comes out in late June....

When I'll be staying temporarily in another city for work, hence why I'm hoping I'll find out about it and be able to do soemthing if it becomes an option since I wont know the area/have the same access to things I do at home.

For the record, I wouldn't bet on any races being added when the Advanced Race Guide becomes available. There are other races that have been statted out for some time that aren't Pathfinder Society legal; just because another hardback comes out doesn't mean they'll make them all options.

Not saying it won't happen, but personally I feel that the odds are pretty slim.

I would actually be a bit disappointed if they just opened the flood gates. I much prefer having the ARG races be boons handed out to VC's and conventions to distribute, like we are doing now.

+1 on that view too.

The drawback being if like me you live in a reasonably out of the way area and work 5+ days a week with few breaks its hard to get to conventions.

Liam - Make a fake Kitsune. Human Synthesist Summoner. Make the eidolon appear around you so you look like a fox. Then to imitate the Kitsune's abilities, drop the eidolon and look like a human. You may be able to take a few traits to imitate the spell like abilities.

On the plus side - I will have a character who can try to fake people out by telling them I am a Kitsune. :)

On the minus side - I will not be able to play my Kitsune with Feral and friends. :(

Well that's a creative approach but I'll just go human this time.

Not to mention, that it might tick off the "real" Kitsune.

This is a pretty awful attempt at trolling. Also April Fool's jokes only work on April 1st.

x.x I hope the Advanced Races will be PFS legal... it'll sell more copies if it will be.

What's the point of buying a 30-50 dollar book to NOT be able to use the material at conventions...?

"Oh, you can use it on home games."

...and I also allow d&d 3.5 feats in moderation at home games, but I'm not buying any new D&D books to use them at home.

Need to keep up the nerd cred levels and show off the shiny books at cons. >.<

There's absolutely no way to reasonably set guidelines for network play on the ways you can munchkin that book.

As I recall the word has already come down that it's a no go for society play. The devs aren't looking into turning Golarion into the Planet Where No Two Freaks Look Alike.

There will be sections of the Advanced Race Guide that will be usable for PFS and sections that won’t be used just like there are in Ultimate Magic and Ultimate Combat.

Yeah, just because the non-core races probably won't be available doesn't mean the stuff for the core races won't be either. Though I'm going to guess that the non-core race info for those with the racial boons will probably be available to them, but we'll see.

I will definitely consider allowing stuff for non-core races for those that have a boon to run the non-core races. But, I need to look at the book first. Also, like has been the case the majority of the time, no rebuilding will be allowed.

And, I will emphasize again, we will not be opening the book wide and allowing new races. Non-core races will be available through convention boons however.

With boons won at GenCon last year one of my sons and I play Tengu. This throws a lot of curve on adventures already. i can understand why Mike and Mark want to keep them out. Heck, Feast of Ravenmoor was a mess with a raven headed PC in the mix. The scenarios and modules are already human male centric as it is. A female in the group can sometimes completely change the whole game (Masks of the Living God) so weirder twists should be avoided in my humble opinion.

Try Defenders of Nesting Swallow with two Tengu....and a half Orc who is trying to fulfill his faction mission by marrying his sister into the village.

Mr Brock, the idea of only allowing people from playing non-standard races by getting boons at conventions discrimiates againist those of us that buy Pazio products but can not afford to attend conventions which would Pazio rather have customers buying thier products or playing in PFS and having a great deal of the product they buy renderd moot in valuue due to very arbritary rules made by the PFS portion of Pazio.

I have far less problem in liiting archtypes, spells and to a lesser extent class abilities but limiting Races that are cannon in Pazio and in Galorian should not happen.

If you want to keep Galorian Human centric do so by limiting the number of nonstandard races to say 20% of a players non retired characters that wolud give players the opertunity
to play nonstandard races and still keep galorian human centric and not tick off your customer base by taking value from the products that your customers buy.

From what I understand, another way to attain these boons is through special events, that don't need to take place at a convention, provided you spend some time communicating with your local VC / VL.

(I did this myself for the first time ever and now, hopefully, I get to play Year of the SL!)

Grand Lodge 4/5 5/5

Hey Lou,

While I certainly understand your position, you're fighting at least 10 years of tradition at this point.

To put it simply, those who gather, get rewarded. Organized Play, imho works better the larger the setting you play in. To reflect this and to reward those who expand beyond their home groups, OP has for a long time rewarded those players who went the extra mile by offering them things you can't get in a smaller setting. Whether this is a special Battle Interactive or a one-time, plotline changing LARP. Or as small little rewards such as the racial boons.

Mike has not been shy in handing these out that I've seen. It doesn't take a very large setting for him to do so. So, even small local cons (or some larger Game Days) have gotten them from my understanding. It doesn't take a lot of effort to put yourself where these are available(given your region). But it does reward those who step out.

It also doesn't take many of these before you hit the 'zoo' groups people are leery of.

Frankly I think if the choice was boons or open access, they would probably choose option 3, and just ban them outright.

Please define "a great deal of the products they buy" so I have a better understanding on what products you think will be rendered moot. I'm not sure I have a clear picture on how many books will not be available for use by the majority of the player base.

Just because you can't create your own race with the Advanced Race Guide doesn't mean you can't use traits, feats, etc... that are in the book for PFS play.

Conventions on the East Coast who have requested support and received a racial boon, along with other products and boons, in the past 5-6 months (some of these have not happened yet but will be in the next 2-3 months and have already received their boons):

Dragon Con -- Atlanta, GA
MepaCon Spring 2012 -- Clark's Summit, PA
ConNooga -- Chattanooga, TN
GnomeCon -- Savannah, GA
Pax East -- Boston, MA
FireFly Game Day -- Lexington, SC
Scarab 2012 -- Columbia, SC
XCon World V -- Myrtle Beach, SC
MarsCon -- Williamsburg, VA
ConnectiCon -- Hartford, CT

Other conventions that didn't receive a race boon, but did receive other PFS special boons include:

StellarCon 36 -- High Point, NC
JaxCon -- Jacksonville, NC
Mega Con -- Orlando, FL
Total Con -- Boston, MA
ConConn -- Stamford, CT
TempleCon -- Warwick, RI
Dreamation 2012 -- Jersey City, NJ
ConCarolinas -- Charlotte, NC
Planet Comics Game Day -- Anderson, SC
Queen City Comic Con -- Buffalo, NY
DC Game Day Special -- Washington, D.C.

I think that covers them all. I may have forgot one or two. Remember, that is just the east coast.

I also see you play at Black Diamond quite a bit. Talk with your VC and VLs. If they schedule a big enough game day, I would be happy to toss a few special PFS Chronicle sheets that way as Black Diamond does an awesome job promoting PFS.

I used to be a regular convention attendee - for many years - but job schedules include last minute travel and booking something like Gencon in January just isn't as feasible as it once was, sadly.

I can certainly understand not wanting to turn PFS into Animal Farm. What are the options for those who cannot attend conventions for one reason or another?

That's 15 total tables for the event, not number of games played by one player.

Say, for instance, you can put together 3 tables Friday night, 3 Saturday morning, 5 Saturday afternoon and 4 on Sunday; that's 15 scheduled tables. You have a "mini-con" and get goodies courtesy of Paizo.

3/5

Are there further criteria besides 15 tables to get race boons rather than other con boons? From the list Mike posted it seems that half the cons did not get race boons for whatever reason.

It is kind of disingenuous to tell people to "just organize a con" if they want the same chance to get a special race if there are some other criteria besides just being "con sized" to get that support for an event.

For example, if I were to organize a virtual con, with a chatroom or a voice chat server where players can interact before dropping down to special channels for VTT games in order to allow people who play PFS in isolated places to have an actual, shared play experience (I'd like to do whatever I can from where I am to help the PFS community for giving me a way to game). Would this kind of event get race boons included in the support if it were >15 tables? Or is there some other tier of events which can get races?

Dark Archive 4/5

Unfortunately, I don't think online events can count for prize support.
