Round 4 Exit Poll (Design Encounter with Map)

RPG Superstar™ 2012 General Discussion

Star Voter Season 7, Star Voter Season 8

In this exit poll I wanted to get an idea of who might take the round, although these have proved unreliable in the past. However, I also thought it might be interesting to get a sense of how many people actually play tested the round. So in order to vote, everyone should reply “quoting” the last message. If you play tested the round, add 1 P to the list, if not add 1 N. I will add a post to demonstrate…

Adam Donald – The Slavers’ End:
Steve Miller – Brike Isle:
James Olchak – Mushti’s Beguiling Oddities:
Tom Phillips – Eightfinger’s Tomb:
Sam Polak – Sequestered Palace Sumptuous:
Daniel Rust – Crimsondale Villa:
Russel Vaneekhoven – Hungry Mountain Dragon:
Mike Welham – Thanatopic Amphisbaena:

…and in my next message I quote myself to give an example (just removing the “Quote” text).

Bump

Scarab Sages

I think this format is a bit odd.

I didn't playtest any, but I voted for

tom phillips - eightfinger's tomb
james olchak - mushti's beguiling oddities
mike welham - thanatopic amphisbaena
russell vaneekhoven - hungry mountain dragon

Didn't playtest any, voted for

Sam Polak (because of previous rounds, not this one)
Daniel Rust (mostly based on previous rounds)
Tom Phillips (mostly based on this round)
James Olchak (mostly based on this round)

I would also have liked to see Russell Vaneekhoven do well, but previous rounds + this round just didn't add up to enough for me…

Liberty's Edge Star Voter Season 6, Star Voter Season 7

1. Sam Polak – Sequestered Palace Sumptuous - I like this entry, but I was blown away by the previous two rounds. Sam is my favorite this year. I'm rootin' for you buddy.

2. Tom Phillips – Eightfinger’s Tomb - This entry was just plain awesome.

3. James Olchak – Mushti’s Beguiling Oddities - I also really liked this one. His monster entry was also full of awesome.

4. Steve Miller – Brike Isle - This one was really different and very ambitious. I think that should be rewarded. I can see this one being a little complicated to run (no, I have not playtested), but I think it would be worth the effort.

Star Voter Season 7, Star Voter Season 8

Ah ha! I knew this had been done in the past, but could not find a link to it at Paizo. I like that it is much clearer than my list. However, is it correct that if someone playtests an encounter they are suppossed to add a mark in the column for "votes" AND the column for "playtests"?

My first three votes (all of which were playtested):
Hungry Mountain Dragon (Russell Vaneekhoven)
Brike Isle (Steve Miller)
Eightfinger's Tomb (Tom Phillips)

Still trying to decide the final one (assuming I don't fall into the Grand Canyon before I get a chance to submit). Sorry, guys.

I didn't play test any of them, because I don't have time to even play my only material. It seems to me that the top eight are all decent designers. There was no entry that repulsed me. I voted for the ones I thought had the best ideas and not how well they were executed. Nearly everyone had a misstep or two.

I voted for:

Steve Miller – Brike Isle
James Olchak – Mushti’s Beguiling Oddities
Tom Phillips – Eightfinger’s Tomb
Russel Vaneekhoven – Hungry Mountain Dragon

Exactly what Phloid said. Including who I voted for. Didn't end up play testing any. I'm sure I will, but couldn't get to it with me gamers over the weekend. I wished for more than four votes, but I guess everybody is strong when you get to the top eight.

Steve Miller – Brike Isle
James Olchak – Mushti’s Beguiling Oddities
Tom Phillips – Eightfinger’s Tomb
Russel Vaneekhoven – Hungry Mountain Dragon

Star Voter Season 8

Didn't play test, I was too busy.

Yes. Well, not really a mark, just add 1. The "playtest" column is supposed to show how many times that specific encounter has been tested.

I suppose it would be interesting to know how the playtesters vote, but it's not really important for the exit poll results, because the official votes encompass both playtesters and non-playtester (and the tendency already points to the bulk of votes coming from non-playtesters).

I voted for the following:

Adam Donald – The Slavers’ End: (on the strength of Pyrebloom)
James Olchak – Mushti’s Beguiling Oddities (on the merits)
Tom Phillips – Eightfinger’s Tomb (on the merits)
Mike Welham – Thanatopic Amphisbaena (on the merits)

This is the round where it stops being about potential and "I want to see what you can do" and starts being about what's actually submitted. Good scenario-building skills are completely essential to adventure-building skills.

Did not playtest, but reading the PBP tests and the reports.

Mushti's and Eightfinger's were easy picks, they deliver good ol fashioned fun with minimal issues.

I'm wavering on Brike. The timescale is the major issue, though the minor ones add up. Basically it seems like a good idea that needs further development. Might end up adding a vote for it.

I see what you mean. From what you've said here, I assume you might not use all your votes in this phase.

However, even if you only think 2 or 3 encounter are good enough to advance, there will still be 4 people in the final stage, so you might as well use your last vote to try to advance someone you'd rather see in the finals in place of others you don't care about.

Star Voter Season 7, Star Voter Season 8

I'm agreed with Pedro - we might as well vote for four, because that is how many people are going to be in the final round. So despite reservations that I share with many of the comments, I made my fourth vote for Brike Isle. It is definitely gonzo in a good way, and I love that roleplaying is an integral part of the encounter. It should be interesting to read some of the feedback from those who got a chance to playtest it (I did not).

I was really tempted to vote for Sam based on his previous entries, but couldn't justify not voting for what I felt were better entries in this round.

Star Voter Season 6

No playtest. I changed my vote from Mike to Sam because of the previous rounds.

Steve Miller – Brike Isle
Tom Phillips – Eightfinger’s Tomb
Sam Polak – Sequestered Palace Sumptuous
Russel Vaneekhoven – Hungry Mountain Dragon

After three years of going through this awesomely awesome meat-grinder I've learned not to take any of these polls seriously.

By the way, Clark, you're a cruel cruel man ... err demon prince.

Ah but I can guarantee you'll tell us eventually, and which is more plausible - that we finally broke you with our incessant questions and badgering, or that there was a plan already in place to announce the top four?

I think you don't have to be a supergenius to know it's the former. Bwahahaha.

At this stage of the competition it may be that some people think along similar veins to me - I don't want to reveal when there are so few competitors now because I don't want to inadvertently discourage anyone.

I think that everyone has done a remarkable job, and I wish I could vote for them all but I can't.

So from this round onwards, my votes are between me and the voting button out of respect and consideration for all competitors.

It's essentially why I (and I believe a number of regulars I know that frequent here) keep things quiet for precisely the reason you indicated. Each round has demonstrated that there were a couple of individuals who've made it through each round even though they may have not reflected the tier that the public polling presumes may be going through the next round.

So yeah, you don't want to inadvertently discourage anyone.

So in other words, it's anyone's game (?!?!). Although, according to these exit polls, I would guess that Russell, Sam, or Mike could be contenders for the coveted fourth spot - with Tom, James and Steve being a sure thing . Ah, the joy of being a pundit! Hey, is anyone hiring political pundits for the 2012 presidential elections? Being a public diviner is kind of fun - now if I could only get paid for it.

I agree with Anthony on this. You can probably read between the lines in my comments on the encounters, but I think I'll skip the exit poll.

Best of luck to all of those still left on the island. You have my respect.

Note: Today I picked up a a copy of the "Complete Kobold Gide to Game Design". Excellent resource. So I'll be gun'n again on all cylinders next year to crack into the top 32!

I did not put much stock in the exit polls, until Neil said he was watching them religiously in 2009. He used it to garner not just WHO would be in the next round, but to assess what the voters liked.

Since then I have participated :)

I had two sure votes, two sure NOT votes. The other four were all pretty close but Steve got in on originality. Nice job everyone :)

Tom Phillips, Sam Polack, Adam Donald, and Steve Miller got my votes.
