I've been putting together a new character and I have an idea that I want to use. Now I don't think it would be allowed but if there's a specific rule against it I'm missing it. So I'm hoping for an official yay/nay and general feedback along the lines of "Yes its a great idea go for it." Or "No its an interesting idea but not in the spirit of the game so leave it for a home brew."
First off a little backstory.
My character towards the end of their apprenticeship had a party when their master was out. Much fun was had by all, specifically he and 3 friends got so drunk on his masters wine they don't really remember what happened that night but the next morning when they woke up two of them had switched faces, the character had changed sex and gained a cat familiar while the fourth who actually picked the locks on the wine cellar was missing entirely. The master furious at the betrayal of trust threw her out on the streets and now she's adventuring in part to find the powerful shapechanging magic to regain her old gender.
Unknown to her the cat familiar was the friend who picked the locks with much of their memory swiss cheesed by the transformation/lower int although bits and pieces remain (hence their granting certain abilities, cat familiar/general familiar bonuses and being able to use various skills again as per familiar guidelines).
Now what I was wondering is could I at level 7 assuming I met all other requirements take the leadership feat and make the cat a cohort.
At level 7 a mages familiar has an int of 9 nearly average human and enough to justify old memories finally returning fully. Obviously all rules would be in effect e.g. level + charisma mod - penalty for having a familiar or 7 + 1 - 2 = 6 making the cat a 4th level thief in addition to a familiar.
Obviously this could just as easily remain backstory with the cat/friend's memories either never fully returning or returning but not making a difference to their situation. However its an idea that appeals to me (and one I had a brief opportunity to use in a DnD game several years back, DM also required me to take the improved familiar feat) and I'm curious what people think about my doing it in official play.
Just to be clear I've already had someone with a rank of venture captain comment that this sort of customization isn't really possible in official play due to familiars not getting class levels. Which is why I don't think it would be allowed and will remain backstory. I'm more posting this because as I couldn't really see a RAW reason against it I'm vaguely hopefull of making the official rules makers consider it for possible future inclusion. Afterall you have the leadership rules for advancing a cohort and the familiar rules for advancing a familiar and the idea of a rogue cat appeals to me as I said.

Ah thanks I didn't realize that oh well backstory it is.
Amazing backstory, however. Good job putting that much effort into it!
