Map Browsing

Honestly, I can't imagine that GW would do this poorly, but I promised my dad I'd post a plea to make sure we can always browse all of our maps, regardless of where we are.

He's playing LOTRO and he's getting very frustrated that he can't look at another map while he's in Moria. I talk to him about PFO quite a bit, so expect a few more posts like this on his behalf :)

Ah.... Speaking of maps, could we please have maps which can be annotated or otherwise modified by the user? This will be particularly important in a setting which is a) vast and unexplored and b) dynamic.

Cartography is a must... !!

More on the matter of maps. Adventuring, exploration and mapping all go together. Could we not have a skill which will allow players to produce in-game maps, both for their own use and for sale to other players? The Cartography skill could have several ranks, allowing the production of increasingly detailed maps. Apart from anything else, this would provide a useful money-making skill for adventuring types, who normally don't have much in the way of productive crafting skills.

This, plus require the creation and duplication of maps to require parchment and ink and time in addition to travel. High-quality maps should be nontrival to create, and have some expense to distribute.

I'm sure there will be cartography, it was listed as one of the requirements for merit badges.

Transferring locations should fall under map sharing. One major source of income for solo/wanderers should be map sharing.

I would like to see players get a map when they enter the world. This is the primary map and has the locations of the NPC cities. As you explore this map would fill out. Players could then copy sections of their maps and sell them to other players, using the NPC cities as reference points. Or they could be mean and just make a map with no reference and make the player find the landmarks on their own.

Some [Merit Badges] also require that you do something in-game, such as harvest a certain amount of resources, or slay a certain number of monsters, or explore a portion of the map.

I sure hope there's a Cartography skill that allows us to create in-game copies of our personal maps, and Local Lore skills with non-Archetype Merit Badges that add details to our personal maps.

This could be really cool. Cartographers would have a relevant skill which would be in demand constantly, as the borders and positions of settlements and notable locations will constantly be changing (from what I understand). Just because your personal map shows a hobgoblin village far in the woods, doesn't mean it hasn't grown to a city since then, or been wiped out entirely.

Stemming from that, I think it would be cool for every character to start with a world map which only shows general geography and the locations of the NPC settlements. Then, in order to fill in the map, you can explore yourself or pay others to fill in portions. Your map would likely never be wholly accurate at any point in time; that's the point. If you want it to accurately reflect the settlements and prominent locations currently in the world, you have to pay cartographers.
