special classes - spirit shaman and radiant cleric of pelor

Age of Worms Adventure Path

I'm starting AoW with a new group. One of my players wants to be a spirit shaman destined to become a radiant cleric of Pelor.

There are some abilities he mentioned that I don't quite understand. This is the way he explains them to me.

1) Radiant Servant - he says that Empowered Healing works on all Healing Domain spells he casts. Is that right?

Also, he wants to get a version of practiced spellcaster for Turn Undead. This would let him count up to 4 levels from class(es) where he did not get Turn Undead ability (Spirit Shaman does not) toward his Turn Undead rolls. Basically his caster level for that ability only would be bolstered a bit to offset multi-classing. Does this seem overpowered or fair?

He can be a prickly player so I'm inclined to give it to him. But if I'm going to say no, the time is now.

(1) Ooooh, sneaky! The Empowered Healing works on the spells he puts in his Domain slots that day, not every other instance of that spell that he prayed for that day. So a single free Empowered spell at each spell level. If you use said slot for a Healing spell. Not a zillion Empowers :-)

The text from Complete Divine is pretty explicit once you get used to reading the things:
"When a Radiant Servant casts "a domain spell from the healing domain..."
(2) The "Practised Turner" style feat seems pretty cool and at first glance reasonable to me. You may want to check out some of the undead baddies later in the campaign and see how they would fare against him when he uses Radiant mojo to turn them big-style. I can't see how it would be worse than a straight Cleric/Radiant Servant doing it though. That said, there are warning signs of Turn Undead cheese.

Should be fine.. unless he has a habit of also springing ridiculous RAW cheese without first explaining the ramifications of his builds in advance. In which case I'll have to revisit my first reaction :-)

Say, how do you get access to the Sun domain as a Spirit Shaman? A feat? Alternate Class Ability? ...OR...A level of Contemplative...?

Oh, and ban nightsticks (Libris Mortis) pre-emptively ;-)

The class would likely by fine even if you allow all of his cure spells to be empowered (perhaps with the caveat that in order to empower a spell, he must have prepared the same spell in his domain slot).

The player may intend to go for the Divine Metamagic feat. If so, keep in mind that the feat received errata. Each time a character takes the feat, it functions on a single metamagic feat, and the character must already have taken that metamagic feat.

I also agree with the above poster; nightsticks should be banned :)

He could get around that / optimize the "domain slot" requirement in two ways:

1. Pick the feat "domain spontaneity" for the healing domain. He then just needs to spend a turn attempt and can turn any spell into a healing domain spell.

2. Or, even cheaper: take the Spontaneous Domain alternate class feature (PHB II) so instead of spontaneously casting cure spells, he spontaneously casts healing domain spells.

:)

There are some seriously nasty ways to rack-n-stack Turn Undead. Be aware of them. :)
