Disney movies live action or animated, that are obscure, just too weird for the masses, or just plain forgotten.

Ones I can think of are "The Computer wore tennis shoes", "Something wicked this way comes", "Blackbeard's Ghost", "Bedknobs and Broomsticks", and "Make mine music"

I thought you were just making things up until Bedknobs and Broomsticks. I guess I really don't know a lot of Disney movies. D:

Disney made "Something wicked this way comes"? Whoa.

Shadow Lodge

Bedknobs and Broomsticks was a family favorite growing up. The one I couldn't stand as a kid was The Watcher in the Woods. That movie freaked me out.

I'll vote for The Black Cauldron as most obscure disney movie ever. Seriously, it seemed to vanish from the face of the earth. I'm not entirely sure that it's not an urban legend.

Shadow Lodge

Another film I remember oddly: The Journey of Natty Gann. Most memorable about it, though, was that not only did I find it boring, but my sister liked it and, for a while, it was shown on television monthly, if not more frequently. I started calling it, "The Journey of Not Again."

Song of the South

That Darn Cat

Darby O'Gill and the Little People

The Cat From Outer Space

Love Darby O'Gill and the Little People

At least they released "The Black Cauldren" on DVD, "Make Mine Music" and "Song of the South" have not.

The "The Gnome Mobile"(has the same two kids from Marry Poppins), "Babes in Toyland"(1960's and 1980's versions), and "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang"

I could have sworn Song of the South was available on one of the Disney Anthology/ Collections thingies... though I can understand why Disney would not want that to come out.

Also, Frankenweinie is an obscure short done by Burton while he was still at Disney.

The Original Nutty Proffesor

Swiss Family Robinson

20,000 Leagures Under the Sea

Candleshoe with a young Jodie Foster

I got a Song of the South bootleg (queue Disney brute squad breaking my door down).

I like it as practically the only source to learn African-American mythology like Brer Rabbit (and the catchy songs), but the racial stereotypes and connections to slavery make me wince in cognitive dissonance.

Saw that one a lot but not as much as Bride of Boogedy and Swiss family Robinson.

Make Mine Music is on dvd(or was), i bought it for my Disney-obsessed wife.

Here's a list of disney movies, many are verrrrry obscure.

Link.

I freakin' loved both of those movies as a kid, I wish the Boogedy movies would come out on DVD.

Worst pig-keeper ever!

Kidnapped!: "Ah, Laddie, but there are Highland gentlemen, and there are Highland gentlemen. And being a lowlander, you cannot be expected to tell the one from the other!"

The Light in the Forest: "Apologize to your Uncle Wilcy at once!"
"No! I will KILL Uncle Wilcy!"

Davey Crockett and the River Pirates: "Now you'll have to excuse me -- you're cutting into my drinking time."

Johnny Tremain and the Sons of Liberty.

The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad is another good one.

They did release "Make mine music" after all on DVD but they edited it to hell. They took out the "Hillbilly" segment competely and altered the girls for one of the others to make them less curvey.

How about their family/comedy westerns like Hot Lead and Cold Feet, The Apple Dumpling Gang, The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again or their modern-day equivalents like The North Avenue Irregulars? Seems like we used to watch those on old-school movie projectors at church overnights or family nights, though I'm pretty sure I saw some of them at the drive-in.

Oh yeah...the Martins and the Coys, right? I forgot that...

Pete's Dragon was always a favorite as well :-)

How about The Adventures Of Bullwhip Griffin, or The Gnome-Mobile, or The Black Hole? These days, basically anything from Disney that was live-action and pre-1980's could be considered obscure.

The Black Hole was an amazing movie, although I thought the book was better.

I'm surprised to hear a lot of these movies described as "obscure". I'm sure I've seen very few movies compared to the average person, but I remember seeing a lot of these on TV back in my childhood (the late 70s or early 80s). I watched Pete's Dragon in the theater several years after its initial release. Even in the late 80s, I remember seeing The Apple Dumpling Gang and 20000 Leagues Under the Sea on TV, and seeing the movie 20000 Leagues being parodied on Saturday Night Live. I remember a lot of people talking about Something Wicked This Way Comes when it was being shown on TV, although I caught only a few minutes of it.

And if you regard the 1980s as ancient history, then I'll get more recent. I hear mention of The Black Cauldron now and then, and once saw it being sold in a store recently. People refer to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and The Swiss Family Robinson sometimes - more often the movies than the books on which they were based, I'm sure.

And I had never heard of The Gnome-Mobile... until I saw the DVD on the shelves of a public library not two weeks ago.

I'm sure that these Disney movies are far better known today than the average movies of the same time periods.

Black cauldron had a few problems... I get why they do not advertise it much. Still a good movie. What was more surprising was that The Little Mermaid was difficult to get a hold of when I tried. The Black Hole was a very good one. =)

I remember watching the Black Cauldron a long time ago, but I don't actually remember the movie, it's so weird. I preferred the book though, which I can remember, the weirdest part was after reading the book I realized I had seen the movie some time ago.

Bedknobs and Broomsticks was a favorite of mine as a kid. I'd also seen Blackbeard's Ghost. Funny that you mentioned "The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes" because the last words on Walt Disney's lips were "Kurt Russell" before he died.

Thanks, Jack, for that link to Wikipedia's "list of Disney movies" earlier. I'm going to have to make it my life's mission to watch every one of those...

Shown on frequent ocassions on Disney Cinemagic here in the UK.

My nominations would be 'Rob Roy' starring Richard Todd (which I remember seeing when I was 6 or 7 and have not seen since)..or 'The Fighting Prince of Donegal' with David Hemmings (which I also saw aged 6 or 7)

Here's an obscure one: "Dr. Syn, The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh"

1963. From the Thorndike novels. Starring Patrick Mcgoohan

If you're going to discuss obscure Disney items, you can't leave out

Education for Death: The Making of the Nazi
or
Der Fuehrer's Face

Other than Song of the South, I don't think are two more buried pieces Disney would like to pretend they were never part of.

?

Why should Disney want to pretend that? What's wrong with anti-Nazi propaganda? I seem to remember seeing Der Fuehrer's Face (or at least excerpts of it - I don't know whether they showed the whole thing) on TV in the 80s.

A friend of mine's got Charlie, the Lonesome Cougar, on DVD.

With a name like that, I'm kind of disappointed it isn't a porno...

...maybe it's time for another Disney remake.

The Black Cauldron

Treasure Island

"Hot Lead and Cold Feet" was one my favorites as a kid. Don Knotts, Jim Dale, and Jack Elam. Comedy Western.

+1 hot lead and cold feet!

then lambert the sheepish lion

howl's moving castle. it's anime, but disney is listed as the publisher so technically it's a disney movie.

From Wiki:

Der Fuehrer's Face won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film at the 15th Academy Awards. It was the only Donald Duck film to receive the honor, although eight other films were also nominated.[4] In 1994, it was voted #22 of "the 50 Greatest Cartoons" of all time by members of the animation field.

Yeah, am fully aware of all of that. Am also aware that it's listed within several collections of banned cartoons, although now reading through the wiki I see they did in fact finally release it for sale.

Was speaking from previous knowledge, obviously haven't looked it up in awhile, so my info was outdated.

Black cauldron incidentally was one of a series of books based on old welsh stories made by llod alexander which was pretty good for a preteen fantasy series when i read it.I was thirteen or so so it may not be great by my standards now,

The sword in the stone
Bride of Boogedy
The legend of sleepy hollow
Return to Oz
Treasure Planet
Atlantis
Freaky Friday
The Rescuers
Pete's Dragon
Return from Witch Mountain
Escape to Witch Mountain
Bedknobs and Broomsticks

I'm surprised this isn't up there yet but The Great Mouse Detective. Nothing like a good Sherlock Holmes knock off.

Oh my goodness, I've had final boss battles in the gears of a giant clock ever since.

I never saw the Black Cauldron movie, but I did obsessively play the Sierra adventure game based on it.

Got that for my 3 year old who loves quoting it verbatim. Warning should you ever encounter Don't use the word bat unless you know the entire exchange between Basil and the little girl he will expect you to act out the scene with him.

The Island at the Top of the World

Mystery at Dracula's Castle

Follow Me, Boys

One of Our Dinosaurs is Missing

Never a Dull Moment

I'm unsure if this was a Disney movie, and I'm probably about to misspell it but: 'Treasure of Madacumbe'.
