Introducing Avatar Tagging

In addition to sorting avatars by usage and date, you can now filter avatars by things like gender, class and type. Chris Lambertz has sifted through more than 1,800 avatars and countless products to identify where each avatar came from and tag them appropriately. You can now find a male elf bard avatar in just three clicks.

  • To change your avatar, or just see the new avatar organization, go to your Messageboard Settings and click the "Change" button next to your current avatar image.
  • To change the avatar for an alias, click the "Edit" link next to that alias, then click the "Change" button for that alias.
  • To change the avatar for a Pathfinder Society character, go to your My Pathfinder Society page, click the "Edit" link next to that character, then click the "Change" button for that alias.

There are some limitations to the current tagging system. The biggest one is that the tags associated with each avatar are currently what the character actually is in the original source product. For instance, this is "Khavith", a female monstrous humanoid wizard from Pathfinder Adventure Path #41, though the avatar could obviously be used for a male character of a different class.

At some point in the future we may allow people to suggest tags which would represent "what this image could be used for" rather than the "what this character is" of the current tags. In particular, I can see adding tags to assist in finding avatars which are creepy, angry or can't-see-the-ears-so-could-just-as-well-be-human-as-elf. But I think this is a good start.

Please use this thread to report bugs with the avatar selection page or avatars which are incorrectly identified.

Suggestions:

Goblinoids in the main list for types! Why? He said so!

Change it so you select options, then hit Filter. Otherwise it gets slow if you want to really refine it! Less load on Paizo too, I'd imagine.

Thanks! That will be tremedously helpful when creating PBP characters. Crowdsourcing the tags will be even better, but is certainly not a top priority.

Super sweet,
thank you Gary

This will make aliases so much easier to set up.

You have no idea how many work-hours I wasted trying to find a good pig avatar once.

Thank you, Gary and thanks to chris for the tremendous amount of work for product tagging.
Also, thanks for PM.
Does the ToDo list get smaller or or does it just assimilate further tasks from some unknown netherregion?

Each task completed is replaced by 1d3 more spawned from the netherworlds and 1d6-3 older ones decloaking within visible range.

This makes things so much easier, thanks so much!

HA! I love this!! I was just gonna suggest this the other day, great minds *do* think alike!!

Thank you very much, Gary, Chris and all of Paizo!!

Cool! Still some bugs to work out, I suppose (f'rinstance, I saw a picture of Seoni labeled "Valeros" and a picture of Valeros labeled "Seoni"), but very useful!

If you see an image that's tagged incorrectly, it would be super handy for us if you right-clicked on the image and selected "open image in new window", and then copy the image URL from the address bar and paste it into a post here. That tells us exactly which image needs fixing. (Turns out there's a lot of pictures of Seoni and Valeros, who knew? :-)

The ones with the boobs aren't Valeros. At least, I THINK they're not...

On a more serious note, I'm using IE7 and there's no "open image in new window" option when I right-click on it. In fact, I'm not sure the new avatar selection Javascript works at all in IE7 + Windows XP (I can filter the images, but clicking on one does nothing).

If you filter on "Cayden Cailean" (for Valeros) and "Pharasma" (for Seoni), there's only about 20 results to look through, if that helps (probably not much).

I see that now. I've made a note to update those 2 avatars.

It should. I've tested it in ie7 and ie8. It's implementation is not perfect in ie7 because of the broken box model it goes off screen a little at the edges(I'm working on a fix for that but other priorities have jumped in front of it), but it should work fine otherwise. The right click bit is just something browsers do in general to allow you to see what the name of a specific pic is. You can do something similar by right clicking and clicking on Save Picture As. It will give us the name of the file which should be sufficient.

If you have more specific worries about the javascript or the little yellow triangle shows up in the address bar at the bottom, let me know, either here or in a PM, and I'll take a look.

Ah...I didn't realise that you now had to click on a link saying "Select this Avatar" rather than simply clicking on the picture (as in days of yore). My mistake.

I can filter them by category, but when I click on the one I want nothing happens.

An avatar description thing showing what book and character the avatar is from popped up once for one avatar, but I cannot get it to appear again and do not know how I got it to appear the first time.

OK, can you let me know what browser and the version number for it? This usually works when you move your mouse over it. It then should bring up a little box with the left hand side showing some information and at the bottom is a link to the avatar. If you're not getting that then something is wrong and we need to fix it. =)

I use the last version of Flock (I know it's old, but it lets me save tabs when I shut down). I can get the detail tab up now, but when I click "select this avatar" the server times out.

It decided it wants to work now, apparently.

I had a message all written out and everything, and must have been distracted by a cave raptor. I just spoilered it for others reading the thread. Thank you for listing these corrections out, I'll be sure to get them in the next update :)
