Improving buildings

Kingmaker

I tried searching for an answer and couldn't find a consensus. So, is it feasible to improve similarly themed buildings; for example building a shrine and later improving it into a temple and eventually a cathedral? Would it save on BPs? Or must a building be demolished and a new building be erected for full BP cost?

There are plenty of historical examples of churches being expanded over time with more and more stuff added. So I'd say it's perfectly feasible.

If you have a city grid laid out, you may need to tear down some of the surrounding buildings in order to have space to expand a one-square shrine to a two-square temple and then a four-square cathedral. I'd probably allow it to save some BPs (otherwise why would players do it?), perhaps half the construction cost of the smaller building (since you still have the effort to demolish it and use the materials, or remodel it to fit in with the new building, or build the larger shrine around the older).

Depends on what the players want do it. I'd also make a Loyalty check or something (perhaps a Charisma check by the High Priestess, DC set by GM) to see if the locals riot at the destruction of their shrine (+1 Unrest!) or if they like the idea and turn out to drag wagons themselves (maybe -1 BP cost)

My players are doing early civic planning; trying keep vacant lots open around structures with the intention of expanding them as resources allow. I know it makes a certain amount of sense and that there are historical precedents for such things. I'm checking to see if there's any (semi) official rules to govern such endeavours or, failing that, a general forum consensus on the matter. This is our first time using the kingdom building system and so I don't want to indadvertedly break the system.

Believe me, this sort of thing isn't going to break the system. You'll have to handwave the exact costs, but that's a DM's job. Remember, they're losing the benefits of the buildings they're replacing, so I don't see the situation getting out of hand.

So you're saying that there is no rule or consensus on the issue?

Not that I know of. You're the DM. Do, or do not. Rule Zero is your friend.

Alright. Thanks for your advice.
