What's a barbarian to do?

Pathfinder Society

Silver Crusade

So I am finally get sometime to play Society again and wanted to play a barbarian and as I look through the factions I can't find a reason to join one. I think what might be a good Idea is that there is a Merc. Society that's job is to supply the PAthfinder's muscle for their travel. Think meat shield R US. But I wanted to play a Kellid but could not find any of the factions he would want to join.

My thoughts are this.

If you can't find any faction you want to join, then you are Grand Lodge.

Grand Lodge is basically the Pathfinder Society proper.

If you want to play the subservient type of barbarian, there are several factions that regularly employ "savages" to do their bidding. For example, Ulfen guards are often employed by Taldorians. So you could be a Kellid warrior in service to faction X and be pretty spot on.

Another way to look at it is ask yourself why is your barbarian a pathfinder at all, rather than off in his homeland doing barbarian things?

Whatever that answer ends up being, it shouldn't be too hard to make a leap to what faction you (the player) pick.

Is he a pathfinder because Uncle Zobbo was one? Well, Uncle Zobbo will clearly 'help' your character meet the 'right' sort of pathfinders..

Is he a pathfinder because he just simply is fascinated by delving in ancient ruins, and the less-cerebral barbarians teased him for his 'unseemly' ways? That's more or less right up Osirion's alley.

Is he a pathfinder because he's bored beating up on the same old people in the same old neighborhoods? if he's joined the organization to travel the world to meet new and interesting people.. and punch them in the face.. then the Scarnzi would certainly love to recruit him.

Etc.

Here's some potential motivations:

Cheliax: Boasts infernal power that could have some intriguing magic weaponry on hand (Keen Flaming Greatsword ho!), and the martial practices of the Hellknights.
Sczarni: Intimidate people, be a total thug, and drink as much as you like with pretty Gypsy girls.
Silver Crusade: Does your barbarian want to Rage against only the nastiest, most dangerous and most evil sources of strife? If so, Silver Crusade will like him. But sitting in a church can be boring.
Osirion and Grand Lodge: They will need someone fast, canny, and exceptionally resilient to death to 'seek knowledge' (read again: fight countless undead, breathe toxic gas, get 100 year old spear traps in the ribs and keep fighting for the sake of some dusty tome.) You don't want them, they want you.

Definitely sounds like a potential Sczarni leg-breaker to me.

"You look like a stand-up kinda Kellid. Hows about all the ale you can drink, and in return you don't ask no questions about things we want you to do? You do us some favors, we do you some favors, everybody stays happy. We treat you a lot like family. Lemme introduce you to a guy I know."

I hope you are not creating a Barbarian with Less Brains than a Brick. To play a Cruisin' for a Bruisin' Barbarian, there are many excuses, primarily Run with a Pack works well for all factions. Revenge on Mah Emknees works for Taldan. Basically, no faction views itself as barbaric, however, barbarians are utility players: resilient, crpss-trained and happy to wear Red Shirts.

I'm surprised Andoran wasn't mentioned yet. Given how Barbarians are often portrayed as freedom-loving folk, good-aligned barbarians could easily be inclined to work with the Andoren.

My barbarian is Shadow Lodge. He joined the Pathfinder Society to travel the world beating people up (cares more about finding a good fight than making money). During First Steps, Part 3, he met Grandmaster Torch, who talked about how the Society wasn't taking care of its agents, and the need to "take care of our own". Mash decided to go along with that.

I guess what I am looking for is "The Swords" ala The Pathfinder Society Field Guide To be a faction. Fame could come from things like how many in your party survived the session or how many monsters you killed.

I figure the back story is he was enslaved early in his life and was some how feeded on to the streets of Absolom. With no real money or communcation skills he was to be a gladitor type. until the someone from the lodge thought he could be an asset to the pathfinders as a protector. He knows there are factions but doesnt care. Do the job keep them safe...er. get paid. do it again

Sounds like a solid Grand Lodge candidate to me.

You could have a barbarian who isn't barbaric; he doesn't have to come from the hinterlands, he just gets really angry/adrenaline rushed/roaring drunk when things get ugly. You could make him an Urban Barbarian, or just be selective when he gets enraged. That's what I did for a PFS character of mine, but that was me.

You could just make up a characterization and think from his point of view which group would appeal to him the most. If you still don't care or can't decide, then the Grand Lodge is the good not-caring choice. Looking into the official setting stuff and picking a homeland for him would help point him toward a specific faction, if only as part of whatever brought him to Absalom.

Or you could even shamelessly play against type: the large yet elegantly-dressed Taldan man claims to be a bard who specializes in percussive instruments; then, when someone makes fun of his moustache, he gets super-offended and caves the guy's skull in.

I think we need AM BARBARIAN to help this guy out. He's always insightful into the ways of the Barbarian. :)

Think less, smash more!!!!!

You are a barbarian, for crying out loud!

Who cares what faction thinks you work for them?! Found your own Clan or start founding it. Make your mark on the world, carve it out of the carcasses of your enemies and call it YOUR home! YOUR Clan and YOUR Faction!

Untill then, any faction there is is there for YOU to use, not the other way around!

Go get 'em, tiger :)

Something to remember is that all PCs are members of the Pathfinder Society, not mercenaries asked/paid to help. That said a former mercenary who decided the insider benefits were more lucrative and managed to pass the tests to join and is still just in it for the money could be fun.
