Miniatures

101 to 150 of 195 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | next > last >>

Here are the Saturday, January 14 updated statistics generated (per case averages) after 33 cases I’ve recorded from the boards. I think I may have missed a case listing, here or there, but I have all from this thread. Also, I’ve tried to make all the corrections mentioned.

Thanks for everyone who has posted. Please continue to do so and I’ll update these stats after another 10 or so cases.

7 booster boxes on average per case have small figures
57 booster boxes on average per case have medium figures

Side Note: Just got an update from Popular Collections. My case arrives Wednesday. Right now I wish I had purchased from Paizo. In a month, when I look back, I’ll be glad I saved some cash …. for the next set.

83 figs in all.
10 goblins!

Probably don't need 3 trolls, 2 ettins or 3 spectres.
But all in all, I'm happy.

Received my case in the mail today. Finished my singles order, along with the Kraken Tentacles and Plant Vines I've so anxiously awaited, a few minutes ago.

Overall, I'm really happy with the set. I had been kind of blah about the set as all the monsters are the basic staples I have plenty of in my collection. While I do love having multiple paints/sculpts to give variety to what hits my table, my anticipation for new minis sets comes from new/unique minis. HM didn't really have that (though Runelords will!).

But as I opened up my boxes I saw the paint steps that didn't photograph well in the previews and was wowed. This is a great set. If it wasn't for the uneven distribution of figures, I would have ordered a second case tonight and held off on singles for another week.

Plenty I could comment on, but I'll just make one observation. The half-elf looks wrong somehow. But if I cover the head with my finger and thumb, I love the piece. Why do I find the head so wrong?

A big thank you to everyone who has submitted a case report so far. We have details on 31 cases – 24 individual cases plus a group of 2 and a group of 5. Unfortunately, there are a few that don’t total to 64 medium boosters. Updates would be greatly appreciated.

Daniel Powell 318 – Great detail. Under by 1. The commons list has 3 slot 3s, 5 slot 11s, and 3 slot 13s.

Excellent catch- I missed a pair of of blue goblins, in slot three. The watch officer in slot 11 should have been in slot 13.

Until I get a permanent storage solution, I'm keeping them in the original bricks, in their original positions. Because I'm seriously OCD.

Since at least some other people seem equally obsessive, brick breakdown, in order by increasing position number as described above, with rarity. If you find a discrepancy, let me know and I'll check my records

Has anyone else noticed a different pattern of common/uncommon/rare/rarer between bricks in the same case? I've seen two people (pres man and Kurgon) post identical c/u/r/(r) as me, and some people with four bricks of the same distribution different than mine. Mandor posts an interesting variation, with the front and back ranks swapped? pattern that commons are not adjacent to each other, nor are rares. There seems to be a theme that goblins tend to fill one slot, shared with orcs and skeletons but not with the watch or later commons.

If anyone wants additional detailed accounts, I volunteer to spend the time and effort recording case breakdowns. Just send me any number of sealed cases, and I will tell you exactly where everything was. ;)

RPG Superstar 2010 Top 32

I regret that I have but one brick (so far) to report. I do, however, have pictures.

Numerical Order:

01 Goblin Warrior (Red)

21 Human Druid
03 Goblin Warrior (Blue) \ 04 Goblin Hero (Blue)

22 total minis, no duplicates.
9 Common, 6 Uncommon, 7 Rare (4 Medium, 3 Large).
All boosters were taped both top and bottom.
Nothing broken or missing. Human Ranger's bow is a bit bent.

In general, they all look much better than the pictures that I've seen thus far. An excellent set.

Actually, that's my mistake. I got the front and back rows mixed up in the report. I definitely pulled the 3 red goblin boosters from the first slot of the front row.

I'm going to blame the Saints' turnovers for my getting distracted and mixing up front and back.

That's an interesting question. I think it comes down to bilateral asymmetry. Also, covering the head (to see what you're talking about) revealed that the mini has a female figure, which is normally one of the first things that I notice; so I definitely agree that there's something wrong with her head.

I have two Cases from different sources. Case 1 (Bricks A,B,C,D) had no tape on boosters, and matched rarity distribution of Very Rare being in back row, 4th from left (I didn't note locations, but I remember this much). Case 2 (Bricks E,F,G,H) had tape on boosters, though one booster had two pieces on top and both were cut. Bricks E and H had same rarity distribution as Case 1, but F and G were entirely random (as to location within the Brick of each rarity) with G having two boosters facing inward. That last bit may not be important, but I noticed it anyway.

A few minis were floating loose, but no bends / breaks except for the third Seelah missing her left lower arm and shield. It also seemed to me that the painting was slightly different between the two cases. It was strongest with the Spectre, but even then only slightly different. Sorry, don't have the ability to take/post photo at this time.

Both Cases contained full sets.

Grand Lodge

Bought one case directly from Paizo. All boosters were taped.

In Brick 1 I did not keep up with positions in this first brick I opened. However, I do recall the Succubus being in the middle row 4th from Left; and the location of the Larges (L). F= Front Row of Standard Boosters, with B = Back Row (Middle Row). Same as Mandor.

So, here's my report. Got one case and black dragon promo. The black dragon box was taped, but none of the boosters in the case were taped. I did not pay attention to positioning of anything.

I did get a full set from my case. No duplicates within a brick. Nothing broken, but a few had come lose in their plastic holders. (One dwarf was face down at the bottom of his booster - must have had too much to drink before getting packed up. 8^)

Oddly, I got the red goblins in all four bricks, but only one pair of blue goblins. Two sets of gnome/dire rat.

83 miniatures total in the case.

Comments:

  • Commons: commons are nicely distributed, though I'd have preferred a bit more zombies and a a few orcs less. The ratio of watch officers to normal guards also makes one wonder about the structure of this watch.
  • Uncommons: I guess I can use multiple rogues and rangers for my upcoming Council of Thieves campaign, but I really don't need more than one elf wizard or human druid, and especially gnome fighter.Maybe these PC types would be better suited to the rare position. Three snakes or rats is OK, but I'd have liked one more mummy, too.
  • Rares: I got three spectres and three ogres, but I think that's OK, I can always use them in these numbers. Two each of half-orc barbarian, werewolf and Seelah, well, one of each would have sufficed. Two succubi and two trolls is OK, though. I don't think I'll ever need two ettins at once. I'd rather have had a second giant caveweaver spider. The trolls do look a bit tiny compared to the other Large humanoids - especially the ettin.

In the end, I got at least one of every mini and there isn't one mini in the set that I think of as completely worthless - which was never true of any of the sets from wizards. (I'm looking at you, you chraals and three-armed wrackspawns!)

One more observation: a previous poster had noticed that one booster position in the brick always yielded either a succubus, a vampire or a lich. This was true of my case, too, and I noticed that several other figures that I got multiples of seemed to come from the same position in the brick too, I think all the goblins, the rat and gnome (now that sounds like a British inn!), and also the wolf and venomous snake, as well as Seelah came from the same booster positions within the individual bricks. Maybe this should be mixed up a bit more in production, or astute buyers could take certain picks from bricks displayed in shops.

None of my boosters were taped, by the way, which made it easier to unpack. :) Two minis, the manticore and one of the ogres had separated from their bases, but that's nothing that can't be easily fixed.

Per Robert Hawkshaw's suggestion, I've put my spreadsheets into Google docs.

Brick detail reports

The one pattern that stands out to me is how regularly cases have one common with a quantity of 4 and one common with a quantity of 1. Makes me wonder if it's intentional.

Nice work.

I'm struck by how often a 3/2/1 distribution of the less rare large minis comes up, with zero cases of a 3/3/0 or 4/2/0. Since (in our limited data) the minotaur only shows up in L1 , and the ettin only shows up in L2, I'm inclined to believe that those two slots are not equivalent. It also looks like red goblins only come in the first slot.

In general, I'm pretty happy with these. I got a full set and none were broken when they arrived. I did notice a few, especially the large minis were out of their plastic retainer, but nothing major. There was no tape on top or bottom of any of the booster boxes. I didn't previously own any miniatures besides a few PC miniatures, so this has been a good way to get a lot of useful minis and not a lot of duds. I have also been very impressed with the participation and openness of the Paizo employees in both this thread and the H&M discussion thread. As a result, Paizo has gone from a company I knew nothing about to one that I think pretty highly of.

Scarab Sages

Okay I will report soon. I think I can list my bricks. I noticed a bit of a pattern with the large minis even after 3 bricks. The middle large is always an Ettin for me.

Also of interest... In my first brick I found a half Orc figure on a werewolf base. It was four in from the right in the front row of small boosters.

Scarab Sages

On a side point, I don't think I will report each brick... Though I will comment on any patterns I notice.

Hate to burst your bubble, but that was not the case (no pun) with me. I opened my second case yesterday and got 2 minotaurs and 3 ettins. The minotaurs were in L1 & L2, while the ettins were in L2 & L3.

As for the red goblins, they were everywhere.

Grand Lodge

Has anyone gone completely OCD and weighed the booster packs? :]

Maybe that might be crossing the line but just a though that occurred to me. I just got my case and can't wait to get home and open it.

I'll link to the google document with my case report.

Scarab Sages

I opened four bricks from one case. The front left small booster was always two red goblins in all four.

I also noticed that most of my Orc miniatures had come out of the plastic holding, and the small miniatures seemed more prone to this as well. No damage to any miniatures that I have detected yet. All but one boxes (the first I opened in my first case) were taped/sealed properly.

Overall impression:
Pretty happy. Noticed most of the things everyone else already pointed out (and mentioned above), size discrepancies, coming out of plastic or off bases in transport (I live in Australia for reference), incorrect base for one mini. Definitely be keeping my subscription.

Still waiting on my Black Dragon sadly...

There are also some comments on quantity and quality.

Happy with my case! Got lots of orcs and goblins. Good stuff.

Just cracked the first brick second case... Exactly the same as the first brick of second case... Except for the last four standard booster.

Scarab Sages

Though I did not take a photo of the 2nd brick of 1st case... It is identical to the 2nd brick in 2nd case.

Scarab Sages

Brick 3 case 1 is identical to brick 3 case 2.

Scarab Sages

Brick 4 case 2 identical to brick 4 case 1. Two case totals to follow.

Wow! I didn't think it would be possible to have have two cases identical (with the exception of the 4).
This just shows the people at Wiz Kids are deliberately puting cases together.

Grand Lodge

Wizkids would need to "deliberately put cases together", otherwise getting a complete set from one case would be far more difficult; and as a result, far less common.

I've counted left to right, back to front, so 1-3 are large, 4-11 is the middle row and 12-19 is the front row.

Commentary: the only damaged mini I had was the Minotaur, who had popped from the base, but also popped right back in. It was interesting (and a bit worrying at the time!) that there were 10/19 boosters the same between Bricks A&B, 8 of them in the same slot. I had almost all the minis by the end of Brick C, with just the Manticore missing, which given what I'd heard in this thread I was pretty certain was going to be in D.

Brick A:

Hate to burst your bubble, but that was not the case (no pun) with me. I opened my second case yesterday and got 2 minotaurs and 3 ettins. The minotaurs were in L1 & L2, while the ettins were in L2 & L3.

As for the red goblins, they were everywhere.

Did you get any duplicates within a brick, and were all the ultra-rare medium minis in the same spot? Was that spot roughly the center of the middle row?

My ultra-rare medium minis always came in the middle row, second box from the left. I also got rares in the middle row fourth from the left, and front row second and third or fourth from the right (I can't remember which). I never duplicated a mini in a brick.

Thanks! That's strong evidence that the detailed data we have so far is not representative of overall conditions. More data is needed, and unfortunately, the people most likely to be able to gather that data have already opened their cases and probably didn't track locations.

I'm new to the whole mini market but I was curious as to what constitutes "rare." I assume it's Paizo's production team that sets that classification but in one instance I am just not seeing the justification. Specifically I am referring to the Half-Orc Barbarian.

I have a buddy who unpacked 3 from his case. I pulled 1 from a brick and another off a single booster buy. I know my experience is inadmissible as evidence of its rarity but it made me wonder about how rare is "rare." According to your aggregate data there are other "rares" that are more common than several "uncommon" and even one (#10 Lizardfolk Champion) "common."

When I opened the single booster that contained the HO Barbarian I was excited with the prospect of trading a rare I already possessed for something else I needed. After discovering they sell for $3.00 online (not including shipping) I began to wonder if they had any trade value at all. Any thoughts on this?

Liberty's Edge

I got a single brick. No duplicates to report.

5  Orc Brute
6  Orc Warrior
8  Watch Guard
10  Lizardfolk Champion
11  Zombie
12  Giant Spider
13  Wolf
16  Human Rogue
17  Human Ranger
19  Half-Elf Cleric
20  Dwarf Fighter
22  Gnome Fighter
23  Dire Rat
26  Spectre
28  Werewolf
29  Medusa
30  Minotaur
33  Ettin
35  Manticore
39  Lich

I tracked the figures as I opened them. The three things that stood out were a) there were no rares in the front row left; b) no commons in the second row right; and c) the ultra rare lich was in the second row, third from left.

In terms of figure quality, I'm very pleased with sculpts and paints of the set, with only the zombie's color looking a little lackluster. Even the wolf, with approximately six pin-drops of paint to his name, looked better.

I think the location pattern we've been seeing, which matches what Auggie observered with his 30 cases, is probably the norm. But it could be clustering and Charles Scholz is part of a different cluster. Unfortunately, we won't get too many more detailed case reports. It's something we need to ask people for when the Runelords set is about to come out.

WizKids is known for not having stable rarities - i.e. some commons are more common than other commons - and not sharing that data with their customers. It's obvious that has happened with this set as well. The cases data people are reporting help Swiftbrook refine his frequency numbers and adds data to those of us keeping spreadsheets to find patterns. It may end up being that a certain rare show up more frequently than a certain common.

As you can see from the data we have so far, there are only small differences between the pull frequency of rares and commons. Excluding the ultra rares, its a ratio of 1 to 1.5.

As for the Half Orc Barbarian, our data shows it as the least pulled rare by a very small margin. But it's a PC mini. DMs generally want multiples of monster minis but don't need multiples of PC minis. So there is low demand for it compared to a Medusa or Gargoyle.

Sveden – Your report is one booster short. Probably an uncommon from Brick 4.

Enlight_Bystand – Thanks for the detailed report. The Set Summary was short two uncommons which were easy enough to find from the bricks – Elf Wizard and Human Druid should both be 2.

goldsaturn27 – Report is missing one booster. Probably a common.

Bagpuss – Report has two extra boosters. Uncommons are 3 higher than normal and rares are 1 less than normal.

Sorry!

I counted the two types of data seperatly - the positional stuff on a chart with exact spacing, the totals by a tally on Kor's checklist. I suspected I might not have kept 100% with the tallies, but forgot to compare it back.

Ha! I admit that maybe I wasn't ummm... never mind.

Anyone want to play "Guess the missing booster?"

I'll go home, recount and get back with an answer tomorrow.

Thanks a ton for pointing that out.

Well I will have 2 cases sometime if Paizo ever decides to ship out the January shipment. I will also buy another case in February.

Based on your case contents and the limited brick breakdowns we have, I'd guess a toss up between a Human Rogue or Human Ranger. I'll go Ranger.

1 Goblin Warrior (Red) 2
2 Goblin Hero (Red) 2
3 Goblin Warrior (Blue) 1
4 Goblin Hero (Blue) 1
5 Orc Brute 2

34 Chimera
35 Manticore 1
36 Giant Caveweaver Spider 1
37 Frost Giant
38 Succubus
39 Lich 1
40 Vampire 1

2 bricks (separate sources, FLGS & Miniature Market, both a lot cheaper than everywhere else I’ve seen) No duplicates in each brick. Sorry, can't break it down by brick.

One Seelah was off its base and its shield arm was detached. Easily fixed with glue since the little pegs had not snapped on either the arm or the base.

Very disappointed in the Druid (I could see offering this to a player and having them ask, “Do you have an actual druid mini?”) a little disappointed in the Mummy (but really, it’s a Mummy, what are you gonna do?) and the scale issues (Troll seems very small for a large creature, Ettin seems a little big for large). The Goblins are awesome and I’m thrilled to have 6 of them. Generally pleased with everything else. Overall it was worth the money to buy 2 bricks and get 3/4ths of the set.

I grabbed my case last night. I love the dragon. The FLGS owner hadn't opened any packs yet, so I opened a few there.
I mentioned that there was predictable seeding, and his immediate reaction was to mix up the case he had on the shelf. He laughed as I pulled out 2 rares first (medusa then vampire, middle row 2nd and 4th from the left). Then I said "I want to see some goblins," opened the 3rd pack, left corner, and pulled out goblins. I haven't opened any more, but those 3 spots seem to be consistent. My case is from the taped part of the shipment.

Great googly moogly I think you may be right. I didn't count last night but as it stands I'm 95% sure I got three rogues but only have 2 of them marked on the sheet.

Anyone want to trade a rogue for a ranger? >:)

OK, my case arrived Wednesday and here are the overall results.

My Case:

Common
1 Goblin Warrior (Red) 2
2 Goblin Hero (Red) 2
3 Goblin Warrior (Blue) 4
4 Goblin Hero (Blue) 4
5 Orc Brute 2
6 Orc Warrior 1

8 Watch Guard 2
9 Watch Officer 3
10 Lizardfolk Champion 3
11 Zombie 4
12 Giant Spider 3
13 Wolf 2

Uncommon
14 Venomous Snake 2
15 Mummy 2
16 Human Rogue 3
17 Human Ranger 2
18 Elf Wizard 2
19 Half-Elf Cleric 3
20 Dwarf Fighter 2
21 Human Druid 2
22 Gnome Fighter 2
23 Dire Rat 2

Rare
24 Gargoyle 2
25 Half-Orc Barbarian 3
26 Spectre 1
27 Seelah, Human Paladin 2
28 Werewolf 1
29 Medusa 3
30 Minotaur 2
31 Ogre 2
32 Troll 1
33 Ettin 3
34 Chimera 1
35 Manticore 1
36 Giant Caveweaver Spider 1
37 Frost Giant 1
38 Succubus 2
39 Lich 1
40 Vampire 1

Grand Total 84 minis.

Pros:
Overall I've happy with the set.
Great Human Ranger
Colorful Gnome Fighter

Cons:
The Dire Rat is in dire need of a reduction spell. Way too big.
Why is the Druid carrying a bedroll?
The Human Rogue pose looks cartoonish
Too many goblins (as I already had several from WotC sets)
My Chimera has green splotches below the green head. Looks like a sloppy paint job. Otherwise I like the figure.
Not enough Frost Giants in a case. Two weapons should dictate two Frost Giants per case.
I don't like the foot pads.
