It’s a celebration of Pathfinder Classics!

In honor of the 5th anniversary of the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, as well as 10 years of Paizo, we invite you to return to your Pathfinder roots! Yes, it is time to go back to your bookshelves, and start rereading your Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path, your Curse of the Crimson Throne Adventure Path, your Darkmoon Vale modules…and expand upon them! Give us your sidetreks into the countryside around Sandpoint, explore the flanks of Droskar’s Crag, or uncover new secrets hidden in the Vaults of Korvosa. Pathfinders, tell us your tales!

Goal
The goal for the fanzine is to create a collection of fan-created articles and supporting art set in Paizo’s Pathfinder Chronicles world of Golarion. In conjunction with the anniversary celebration at PaizoCon 2012, Wayfinder #7 will be focusing on Year One of the Pathfinder product line! Please use the products list below as your main references (as well as that handy-dandy PathfinderWiki)! In the case of a plethora of articles on similar subjects, preference will be given to articles that follow this theme. As always, crunch, fiction, and flavor articles are welcome! Also, artists be sure to note our Call for Art Submissions as well!

In addition, writers can submit to one of several regular series featured in Wayfinder:

  • Advice: Have some advice you want to pass on to new GMs or players to the world of Golarion?
  • Bestiary: New creatures to terrorize your PCs with!
  • Of Chance and Skill: Games, new to or adapted for Golarion, to play at your table!
  • Prestigious: This article is devoted to a new prestige class for the world of Golarion.
  • Realm Building: The Kingmaker Adventure Path introduced a lot of new goodies for building armies, cities and kingdoms. This column is focused on building upon those rules.
  • Side Treks: Side Treks feature short outlines for a sidetrek adventure set in a particular Pathfinder adventure, from the products listed below. One sidetrek outline per submission for this column. Please reference earlier Wayfinders for the layout for this article. Submission size: 325 words.
  • Tales from the Front: Fiction articles based on any of Paizo’s adventure modules or paths.
  • Weal or Woe?Two NPCs (including statblocks), one helpful, one not so much. Include hooks for the PCs to know (or hate) this NPC and how to use them in a campaign. Include a boon (Weal) and drawback (Woe) for the NPCs in your article.

    Guidelines

  • Thou shalt not disregard canon, thou shalt build upon it.
  • Keep in mind thy audience. Keep it PG-13. No slash fic/porn fantasies, cheesecake/beefcake/fan service.
  • Short and sweet. Unless otherwise specified, article sizes are 750 and 1,500 words. These are HARD targets, not a range, so come as close as possible to these targets. Anything over 1,500 words will have to be pre-approved by the Editor-in-Chief.
  • Submissions used to defame, harass, or threaten board members are not tolerated.

    Submission Instructions

  • Conditions for Submissions. All authors and artists must agree to have their works reproduced for this and other Wayfinder products, be it for translations into other languages (we will be responsible for the truthfulness of the translations), special publications, or use on a Wayfinder website. All of Wayfinder’s publications are NON-PROFIT, and authors and artists will be given proper credit where due.
  • Send all submissions to: wayfinder.fanzine@gmail.com with the subject line containing “Wayfinder #7 Submission”.

    • All text submissions must be submitted in DOC format (doesn’t matter if you use Office or OpenOffice). Note: Files sent in RTF, TXT, DOCX, or any other format than DOC will be rejected.
    • Do not use fancy fonts or colors or styles for formatting - these will get stripped out in the editing and layout process. Use the standard body font for the program you’re using - bold and italics are fine.
    • For tables, please make them tab delimited. Fancy formatted tables just get reduced to this format anyway.

  • Include your name and board name in your submission - example, “Liz ‘Lilith’ Courts”. Your entries will go through editing passes for clarity and concision. Depending on time constraints, you may or may not receive feedback on the editing process and your script.
  • DEADLINE: March 31, 2012, 11:59 Pacific. All entries will be handled on a first come, first serve basis. Some articles may be rejected depending on the final size of the PDF.

    Advertising

  • Fan projects operating under Paizo’s Community Use Policy are welcome to advertise their websites and materials.
  • Third party publishers wishing to advertise their Pathfinder Roleplaying Game-compatible projects in Wayfinder #7 are welcome to advertise as well. Space is available for 1/4, 1/2 and full page ads.
  • Email wayfinder.fanzine@gmail.com for questions about placing an ad. Be sure to include “Wayfinder #7 Advertising” in your subject line.
  • DEADLINE: April 30, 2012

    Woot!

I think I have an idea.

I'm getting ideas too. I'll see what I can work up.

*goes to dig around in the pile of older adventures*

    Dark Archive

so mainly lv5-6 adventures, between Varisia, Osirin, Andoran and Galt?

    Pathfinder Adventure Path, Rulebook Subscriber

I know I've said this before, but I'll see if I can't come up with something for Wayfinder #7.

I'd more than likely do NPC's ala "Weal or Woe". Perhaps a new monster or two as well.

I'm sure I can put something together for this. Now to figure out exactly what I want to do...

Are fiction submissions still being handled via PF Chronicler?

Working on something relating to Escape from Old Korvosa, myself.

    In short, yes.

People interested in getting their fiction into Wayfinder should really take part in the community of writers over at PF Chronicler. Preference will be given to those pieces that have "run the gauntlet" over there.

Fiction that hits the "Anything over 1,500 words will have to be pre-approved by the Editor-in-Chief" guideline will definitely come from the Pathfinder Chronicler group. Nearly all of our larger fiction pieces now originate from their group.

Now, if people send me their 750-word or 1500-word fictional piece, and I like it, I may send them over to the Chronicler group, and ask the group (and author) to polish it up for Wayfinder.

I'm kind of feeling a base class, are submissions for them still fine?

    I think I might have a CotCT tie-in. :)

On the subject of "Thou shalt not disregard canon, thou shalt build upon it.", where is the general line drawn?

That is, if things are merely added rather than overwritten, is it still in the clear?

    Spoiler:
For example, adding a large population of CN/CG orcs to Nirmathas and suggesting that Irgal Nirmath had a wife and possibly a child. And possibly alternate orc subrace stats(going with the standard +2,+2,-2 array).

(not the CotCT tie-in, but something that's been stewing for a while)

I knew Mikaze's post would be about orcs. :-P

I think that a large population would run afoul. But a small or even medium sized one? That could slip under the radar. Especially since they'd want to be hidden, due to racial stereotypes.

Well, when in Rome, drink the kool-aid because all the cool kids are doing it. When I'm sitting at home recovering from my root canal tomorrow, I'll start jotting down some ideas for Classic Monsters Revisited.

If any writers want some art for their submission I am interested in some collaborative work!

Bestiary, Of Chance and Skill, or Realm Building? I'm not sure what I want to submit more. I have a Rune Ooze, a Harrow deck game, or additional hex goodies for a kingdom.

Yes—the Open Game Content statement is on the credits page of the PDF, though content that might contain Paizo intellectual property is off-limits.

    Sovereign Court Wayfinder, PaizoCon Founder

Just a little reminder to everyone...we are eagerly awaiting your submissions!

    Current article-plans:

Merchants of Magnimar (3 to 5 NPCs given a short one or two-paragraph write-up)

And the similar "City Councillors of Magnimar" (might be able to sneak a Milani-worshiper in there to keep the streak going.;) )

A "Weal and Woe" (because I have a nasty-ass Hellknight Justin Sluder statted up for me for the Varisia-issue) that didn't get used because the planned Weal that time was nothing but a Robin Hood clone).

I'm doing a little fiction plus an archetype and an artifact description. Theme: the Seven Swords of Virtue (because there can be light without darkness, but there's no darkness without light!)
I hope it's in theme enough!

Working on a return for Orrin D'Vaul and the wayward Vancaskerkin cousin...maybe rework a Weal & Woe bit as well.

Woohoo! Gonna try and work up something(s) for submission in this issue!

Quick question, though, as a newbie to Wayfinder submissions- are we only allowed to submit one article, or can we submit multiple articles? (Though I'd certainly understand that only one could be eligible for publication per author at a time.)

Sczarni RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

A few issues ago, I submitted 2 articles. When Timitius asked which I prefered, I told him to choose for me. I feel he chose one that fit the issue better after seeing the end result.

You are allowed to submit any number of articles you want, really. However, understand that does not guarantee that ANY of them will be selected.

I need to read through every submission. When I get more than one from someone, I will make the call of "keep", "maybe", or "reject". If your submissions result in more than one "keep", then I'm going to reassess them (possibly asking you which you like more) to determine which one stays as the "keeper", and which one gets bumped to the "reserve" status.

Most of the time, we have more than enough "keepers", so I limit it to one article per author. If we find that fans did not send enough submissions to fill the 'zine (which happened for #6) then I go to that "reserve" pile, and after that, the "maybe" pile to fill the pages.

One of the factors that weighs heavily on my decisions of "this one or that one?" is which one fits the issue's theme better. Many good articles are shelved or passed on because they don't have anything to do with the theme. Consider that as well.

With all that said, I want to stress that I want your BEST efforts. Take the time to craft your ideas into a solid article. PROOFREAD IT. Have someone else proofread it. Playtest it, if you have time. Run through the stat blocks again, and make sure it's all correct.

Also, don't spend tons of time on trying to format it just like it would look in a Paizo document or the magazine itself. Formatting often needs to be stripped out completely so that our style tags can be used instead. (We are working on placing a style tag template somewhere for people to download and use, btw).

And as always, if you have a question, post here or email us.

I'm playtesting that werewolf prestige class. Found a few kinks in it that need some ironing.

Just submitted "The Sword of Love". Hope it's suited for the issue.^^

Are there any rules/guidlines when sending stats for a monster?

I am not very computer savy so when you say you only except DOC format, how can I tell if I am using this format?

How many words is the limit when sending a new monster?

Does the monster have to be completely original or can it come from myth/folklore(that hasn't been used in Pathfinder)?

If you're using Microsoft Word or Open Office, you're usually saving in a DOC format (there should be an option when you save it). Word count limit is the same (there's also tools in your word processing program to check this). Monster can be original or something from folklore.

I have only just returned to the board after a long absence, and am very excited to see this project. I'm currently pulling out all my year one stuff to look at, as well as reading all the back issues of Wayfinder, to get a feel for the mag.

Yeah, I think they go a bit far with the double-secret probation rules. I'm not sure why there's a password for the author's critique forum. I'm also not sure why there's a second password for a forum that's supposed to keep track of authors critiquing others' works vs. how many of their own have been reviewed.

    Sovereign Court Wayfinder, PaizoCon Founder

I'll try and have a chat with the Chronicler folks, and see if we can make a guide for new Wayfinder hopeful authors to help streamline the joining and participating process. ;-)

    Some random ideas for inspiration;

Rise of the Runelords had articles on Desna and Lamashty, and Curse of the Crimson Throne on Abadar and Zon-Kuthon. A selection of channeling feats for those four gods or deity-specific planar allies could be one way to go, if you want to just make something quick and easy.

Crown of the Kobold King and Classic Monsters Revisited could inspire reworked versions of the color-modified kobolds mentioned in CMR, updated to be more Pathfinder-y (and to bring the weaker than PC average kobolds up to a more PC-ish power level?). Templates for black, blue, green, red and white scaled kobolds could be introduced, and suggestions for how to use them in a upscaled Crown of the Kobold King adventure (for instance, red-scales might be weakly fire resistant, and more likely to use alchemist's fire, etc. as weapons, or fight in a room slicked with flaming oil on the ground, knowing that it will hinder their attackers, but not themselves).

Guide to Korvosa kind of begs for a native outsider version of the Imp that would be a decent match for a pseudo-dragon, and less 'unbeatable' to a low level person (stripping away some of the DR, toning down the immunities/resistances and axing commune, for instance, making the native Imp population more like fiendish template flying gremlins, and less of an invincible boogeyman capable of killing hundreds of average citizens in a night).

Korvosa might also be a suitable location for a template or feat or trait involving lust and seduction and enchantment, as the presence of something spoiler-y leaks into the surrounding populace. That might go to adult places, unsuitable for a Wayfinder article, 'though...

Entombed with the Pharaohs begs for *something,* oozing flavor from every crevice, but I got nuthin' on that. Some sort of development of the glyph curse thingies, perhaps a series of feats or traits that a former victim of the locations magical curses (or the descendent of someone who was cursed, and was born with a birthmark in the shape of one of the glyphs) could be funky. Such 'marked' inviduals might be descended from the original artisans who built the pyramid for the Four Pharoahs, and have inherited some unique ability related to which of the four marks they bear, like the 'marked' individuals in the Shackled City adventure path.

Is there a limit on the number of submissions you can make? I've been kicking around two or three things I might write up.

    Also, as regards the fiction,

"Tales from the Front: Fiction articles based on any of Paizo’s adventure modules or paths."

    and,

"Short and sweet. Unless otherwise specified, article sizes are 750 and 1,500 words. These are HARD targets, not a range, so come as close as possible to these targets. Anything over 1,500 words will have to be pre-approved by the Editor-in-Chief."

don't really seem to go too well together considering the length of these things.

Read my response up in post #25 regarding how many submissions you can send....but the short answer is "No, no limit, but I'm likely only going to pick ONE of them, unless we have a shortage of submissions...OR you've sent in VERY VERY good ones"

Most of the fiction we get is 1500 or 3000 words. Those will need to go through the Pathfinder Chroniclers group (link provided a few post above). The 750-word stories I am more open to receiving directly.

Make no mistake, the 750-word stories have been wonderful! The longer submissions have been consistently coming from the Chronicler group for the past 3 issues (aside from the ones from professional writers). They have benefited from the multiple rounds of editing, tweaking, and commentary, so by the time I get the submission, there is very little to suggest or change. I like that. A LOT.

So, to reiterate....fiction submissions of 1500 and 3000 word counts will be coming from the Pathfinder Chroniclers. Short stories of 750-words can still be sent to Wayfinder directly. Especially if you want to use it as a tie-in with a 2nd article.

    From the C.U.P.:

"You may descriptively reference trademarks, proper names (characters, deities, artifacts, places, etc.), locations and characters from products listed in Section 1 of our Community Use Approved Product List at paizo.com/communityuse/products, provided it is clear that these are our marks."

So, referring to Karzoug is OK. Perhaps you are statting up some minion of his, or a prestige/alt class based on him. Good.

Altering Karzoug is not "descriptively referencing" him. So, altering his stat block, embellishing on his backstory, history, or making an alternate history, putting him in a story about his early teens, etc. That's not OK. It's messing with canon. And that violates Wayfinder's Guidelines.
