The Midnight Mauler query

Pathfinder Society GM Discussion

Grand Lodge *** Venture-Lieutenant, New Zealand—Dunedin aka dinketry

Dear All,

Though I did not run it (don't even have my first star yet, let only four), the Midnight Mauler scenario was run at the last PFS event I coordinated. I'm trying to get an answer on one of the boons that one of the players received.

Spoiler:
What type of sword is the "Sword of Station, Lesser" that the players can purchase after the scenario? Or is it a "choose your own flavor" type of item?

Thanks y'all, and Happy New Year!

The way it was explained to me, it's a non-functional sword of whatever fluff you desire. I imagine it more like a rapier, due to the nature of the region reminding me of Italy. Principalities and all that.

The blade is a symbol of station.
Not suitable for combat, but with some extra goodies.

***** Venture-Captain, Indiana—Indianapolis aka Red-Assassin

Note it is also uses a belt slot, I would imagine it would be more of a club if you decide to attack with it.

For those without access the to actual scenario...

Midnight Mauler Spoiler:
Sword of Station
Arua: faint adjuration and enchantment
CL: 1st
Slot: belt
Price: 360gp(lesser); 1680gp(normal); 4120gp(greater)
Weight: 5 lbs

Description
"This ornate sword and belt impart uncanny confidence and insight while worn, granting a +2 competence bonus on Sense Motive Checks. Three times per day, the wearer may draw the sword and deliver a single-word command, as per the spell. Lesser versions of swords of station exist that allow the wearer to cast command once per day, but they lack the confidence-boosting enhancements. Greater swords of station improve the competence bonus on Sense Motive checks to +5. A sword of station is blunted and poorly balance, intended as a showpiece rather than a weapon. If used in combat, treat it as an improvised club."

Note--this scenario should become openly available sometime in February/March.

Ok, since this just came out to the general public, and this is the closest thread to a discussion on the scenario, I'll ask this here.

I bought and downloaded this last night, and there's an error on the Chronicle sheet:

Pathfinder Society Scenario #3–16
The Midnight Mirror

Now, if I were to run this, would the chronicles be legal, even though the name is wrong? Or should I wait until they fix this? I already posted in the product thread, but I'm not sure if it was missed or not, as Kyle posted shortly after I did whining about having to pay for it... ;)

Turns out, when we do a Module called Midnight Mirror and a scenario called Midnight Mauler within a few weeks of one another, this sort of thing happens. I'll get that corrected today so there's no confusion when we release a Chronicle sheet for The Midnight Mirror later this spring.

Thanks Mark. :D I got a kick out of it, since I knew you guys had a couple of Midnights on the mind. ;)

This has been corrected. If you downloaded the original version, you should repersonalize and download the file again to get the corrected Chronicle sheet. No other content in the scenario has changed.

1 person marked this as FAQ candidate.

Out of curiosity, how does the Midnight Mauler in tier 3-4 manage to have Vital Strike? Vital Strike requires a +6 BAB, and the Midnight Mauler only has +5.
(Hopefully the answer is a sweet trick I can pull for one of my own characters...)

I personalized and downloaded this last night as I am running it at PaizoCon. It does not have an actual chronicle sheet and I did not see one on the Additional Resources page. Am I missing something?
I was hoping to get a practice session in locally before running it at the con.

Yes you missed something..

They give you 2 version in the Download..

The Now Retired Season 2 Exclusive version that was Tier 1-7, which does not have a Chronicle sheet with the scenario because it is not legal to run.

And the Current Season 3 Version That is tier 3-7 that has the chronicle sheet because it is the Legal Version.

You can tell the difference by the Tiers and the Covers, the Season 2 version has the Season 2 Cover colors (Blueish) while the Season 3 has the Season 3 Cover colors (Greenish).

Cool, that explains the 2-ex. scenerio number.
Did I say missed? Ignored is more accurate. I ignored the zipped folder because there was a pdf right in front of me :) Hope the scenarios do not have sneak attack as I missed that bluff check on the fein... *ouch*

I have not seen that this has been answered, in this thread or any other thread. Is this simply a lost opportunity that makes this NPC that much more weak? Or is this fixable?

Inquiring minds would like to know.
