The return of D&D minis

They are coming back and they will not be random.

The Big News: Miniatures Return

Jumping forward a bit, the big product announcement I alluded to earlier was this: the return of miniatures produced by Wizards of the Coast… and this time, no random packaging. For all those gamers who said things like “I just want to be able to buy a box of orcs for my game,” this is for you.

Wizards will be releasing themed boxes of miniatures (like orcs, drow, goblins, elves, etc.) with non-random contents, providing a variety of miniatures in each box. Not only that, but the minis will be useable in a new skirmish game to be developed around the new minis. Each box will contain the stats you need to play with the box you buy, and interlocking terrain used to build the battlefield in interesting ways for each match (that is also fully useable in the RPG.) Additionally, after a few sets are out, you’ll be able to mix and match them in order to build your own armies, not being constrained by what you buy in each box.

I am looking forward to finally being able to buy packs of cannon fodder.

Edit: Just saw the date of the post at the link as August 2011. Is this still happening?

Short answer: Who knows?*

Longer answer, I've not seen any press on this since the announcement. But then I'm not looking. Paging Mr. Betts...

Spoiler:
Yeah, I could have said 'who cares' but I'm being civil

Shadow Lodge

Who cares? Well..umm...short and painfully obvious answer: me. I paint the majority of my miniatures. The new wizkid miniatures look nice, but I just want orcs, goblins, etc. for my plastic collection. I'm sure there are many who feel the same.

Sorry Asphere, I forgot the smiley in my spoiler post.

A little more on topic... have you looked at the plastic minis, Paizo's other mini partner Reaper makes?

As much as I love Reaper, from the photographs I am not impressed by their plastics. The paint jobs look really bad. I am looking forward to picking up some pathfinder plastic goblins from the secondary market. I love the way pathfinder does them but I cannot bring myself to paint an entire goblin raiding party.

I think (can't find the post so going by bad memory) Erik said they hope to have a goblin pack by summer.

Sovereign Court

Well unfortunately if you don't like the Reaper pre-paint quality you likely won't be to happy with the D&D miniatures quality either. The paint jobs went down significantly on that line after the first few sets and never really recovered. Once they hit 4th edition they were mostly terrible.

The iconic stuff wasn't too bad, but that doesn't sound like what your looking for.

This seems like an old news item. Maybe I'm missing something. Still, I fully support the concept of selling miniatures in the way that virtually every GM I know would prefer to buy them (by faction, no surprises, what you see is what you get).

Although I will say that when I decided to build out my mini collection I was able to do so pretty easily with after market minis, making my own and purchasing older plastic sets off ebay.

I wouldn't buy anything from WoC even if it was free. Support Pathfinder products. Good company. High quality products.

How does one go about buying things that are free? ;)

Why so much animosity toward WoTC? Do they use child slave labor? Do they belong to a conglomerate that is involved in weapons trade? Do they sell WMDs to N.Korea? I don't get it. I mean..I know they made a completely new realization of D&D that isolated their fan base...but that puts them pretty low on my list of companies to boycott.

Thanks for the info - once Paizo starts churning out themed packs I will be all over them (I did buy the Iconics and they look fantastic).

That is unfortunate. If the new D&D minis look bad I wouldn't buy them.

Asphere, I'm with you. My own main gaming group is filled with resentment and anger towards WoTC. Even the dude who is still active in the MtG card game world hates 4e enough that he won't purchase anything from WoTC that is targeted towards D&D. We play Pathfinder now for all of our campaigns, but I have a second group that still plays 4e, and I enjoy that as well. It's a totally different game, but it's still fun. I use my miniatures interchangeably on both systems.

On the other hand, one of the members of my gaming group hates everything about 4e and won't purchase any 4e gaming materials, but aggressively purchases WoTC miniatures to play Pathfinder with... I think that's a more reasonable position than the complete boycott approach.

I've never understood the 4e hate. I prefer 3.5, and I think Pathfinder is a great continuation of the original D&D game style, but nobody held a gun to my head and made me throw out all my 3.5 material when 4e came out. In fact I still have my 2e and 1e stuff if I really wanted to play it. In the end it's all just a reason to get together and share some fun with some friends.

In my experience, the Reaper pre-paints are very much superior to the D&D pre-paints. I have a good number and they look great. Not quite as good as the new PF iconics, but close. I'd say the worst Reaper pre-paint is better than the best, rarest D&D pre-paint.

I've got a pretty good collection of WoTC, Reaper and WizKids miniatures (as well as lots from other sources as well).

Of the prepainted minis, I've found the Reaper Pathfinder line to have the most consistent paint quality. Note that I did not say the "best" paint quality. In fact I've found the paint quality to be so variable on the WoTC and WizKids miniatures that some totally blow me away while others look like they were handed out to kindergarten kids.

Asphere, I did a 45 character set of orc raiders in a bit over an hour using three colors (base coat of green spray paint) and a minwax varnish/stain dip and they came out pretty well. And I'm no great shakes as a painter.

It may just be the pictures. I might have to order some orcs.

The problem with the Reaper PPM is that they are too pricey.

Its amazing what a simple magnifying, illumination lamp can do. I used to accept the fact that it was beyond the capabilities of my 40 year old eyes but I now paint my favorite reapers as a hobby all its own. All i can say is.. pick your favorite mini for your next campaign, jump in, and paint it. You'll be surprised how much you improve with practice. :)

That said.. Mr Sean K Reynolds was my inspiration to jump into the world of minis painting so I must give a shout out. Do yourself the service of trying it. The more you improve, the more you'll want to tackle greater challenges and I hope you'll find the experience as rewarding.

Drow : should be melted down (sorry the very idea of drow still rub me the wrong way.

Heroes: Have way too many from the old DDM, don't need more

Goblins: I have very rarely seens WOTC goblins that are good sculpts to use for pathfinder... the goblin of lolth or something from one of the last sets was ythe best.

If they are still $45+ like the original press release says, than these packs are very depressing news to me.

I just looked on Amazon and it says all the list prices are $40, but for some reason they're discounting pre-orders for the goblins pack to $28 (rounding up like I always do). Not something I plan on getting, just trying to cheer you up.

Do you know if these are repaints?

I'm very curious (excited) to see how the Wizkids Pathfinder Encounters compare. I know nothing could stop me from buying the Pathfinder Goblins.
