Help with bladebound magus!

Advice

Hello, as the title suggests, I'm requesting help builing a pfs legal bladebound magus. First off, I'd like to know what some good weapons to use might be. I was looking at either scimitar or bastard sword. Also, are there any interesting things that can be done with this archtype that I don't know of?

Finally, I want to flush out my character and swords major personality, saving the small tidbits for later. My 4 thoughts were:
-The blade HATES being used to attack things, and complains about this frequently, while the magus LOVES to mess with the sword, often attacking the ugliest creature in the bunch or making a point to not clean it after particularly gruesome fights
-The blade is the magus' brother/sister/uncle fester and has a personality according to this (perhaps the magus failed an experiment with said family member, and had to bind the soul to the nearest object [bonus points for those who get the reference])I could also have it be a dead pet, such as a dog.
-The magus is quite shy and has confidence problems, and the sword is a controlling force for the player. This option essentially has the blade be the main character while the magus is the backup, which could be interesting. Essentially I play the sword who tells the magus what to do.(reference again?)
-The blade and magus are multiple personalities of the same person, and the sword was created when the magus seperated himself from, er, himself. The magus would be a shy, happy go lucky kind of guy, while the sword has all of the magus' previously bad behaviors and impulses. Maybe have the two personalities randomly switch vessels? Could be fun. I'd roll a 10 sided die. In that many out of game minutes, the personalities switch, and I roll again for the next swap.

So, thoughts? Also, which concept seems the most intriguing? I'm looking more toward #4...

I'd go with option 2 or 4 also if you want to use a scimitar or bastard sword since bastard sword requires exotic weapon proficiency I'd go with the katana since it is a nice middle ground between damage and Crit range.

Ooh katana... And I've chosen option 4. It's too fun looking to pass up. Multiple personality disorder with a single split personality. Chaotic good, chaotic to show the chaotic nature of the changes, and neutral to show an equal pull toward good and evil. Essentially one part is lawful or chaotic evil, while the other part is the opposite.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Since you haven't specified a race preference, you might look into making him an elf for several reasons.

1.) Built-in spell penetration (elven magic).
2.) Can stack DEX and take Weapon Finesse with his weapon (I recommend a rapier), affording you higher AC/Reflex/Initiative than if you'd spread your points between DEX and STR for melee.
3.) Bonus to INT. Your racial bonus was probably going to go here anyway.
4.) Immunity to sleep, bonuses vs. enchantment. Even though the Magus has a high base Will save, WIS is usually a dump stat and thus your Will save is usually not as good as most other casters.

I like personalities 1 & 4 most.

Bladebound Magus requires that you use a one-handed slashing weapon. Those include:
Battleaxe
Klar
Longsword
Scabbard, combat (sharpened)
Scimitar
Terbutje
Terbutje, steel

And if you're willing to go exotic:
Falcata
Khopesh
Knife, butterfly
Rhoka
Sword, Aldori dueling
Sword, bastard
Sword, temple
Urumi
Waraxe, dwarven
Whip
Whip, scorpion

Personally, I think a Bladebound Magus with a whip would be cool, if a bit feat-needy.

@fatespinner,
I've decided to go strength magus, with my str between 14-17 and my dex between 11-14, after racial. Too many magus' go dex with scimitar and dervish dance, and I want to stay away from that. I actually did decide on elf for my race, for almost all the reasons you listed.

@blueluck,
Bladebound magus' have to use a slashing weapon, so whip is out. Although, a whip magus sounds pretty cool.

Whips ARE slashing weapons.

Kensai + Bladebound whip magus for the win.

Lmao that just sounds silly to me, but effective all the same. How viable would whip be vs. katana?

Silver Crusade

Let's just say that I prefer my enemies to be lying on the ground, and that Arcane Pool + True Strike + Arcane Accuracy + Trip on a poor guy (+ disarm on an attack of opportunity at higher levels) with a Dueling, Agile Whip is like, f*&+ing good. It requires a Dex based build though.

The blade bound magus with the whip is freaking great with the right feats. Whip mastery, and there is a trait that is pretty cool as well with it.

Magus: Bladebound Spire Defender

This would be the way I would go with a exotic weapon build.

Spire Defender grants you a free one handed melee weapon that has the disarm or trip special feature: You get whip for free.

You get combat Expertise and Dodge for free..However you do lose your armor proficiency. However a 1 level dip will get that back for you and your armored casting at the same time.

And spell recall is switched out with Arcane Augmentation. +5 to Acrobatics, or Perception anyone. really nice ability.

The benefit is the 3 free feats, if you want to go whip magus.

Whip sounds good, but I want to go with a bladed non-dex build. I was more curious than wanting suggestions on whips =P

For race, I would choose Human. You can take Extra Arcana andToughness at 1st level.

He could take Extra Arcane Pool, but not Extra Arcana. Unfortunately.

Personalities #1 because of #2 would be fun but chaotic, a rhoka or a falcata, and play a tengu starting august 16 for intelligence bonus and proficiency with all sword-like bladed weapons. That's what I would recommend, I've already written up a tengu like that for a home game with personality #2 but I liked #1 also. I've seen 2 magi in society play, a half-orc whip magus that repositions everyone and a elf/half-elf (can't remember) that uses a spell-storing scimitar and can get 8d6 per round sometimes at 7th or 8th level. You could also have the soul of a trapped demon or devil that was an enemy of the family or world and was defeated but trapped in a sword for you to keep an eye on, but as the more energy you take or use from the trapped soul the more it's influence over you and the world grows. The problem with this last idea is that unfortunately there are paladins in most campaign worlds, so one of them might not approve of you walking around with an evil outsider trapped in your sword.

The sword must have the same alignment as his character. It could only be evil if the Magus is evil.

If you like the idea of a whip but want a blade, how about a Urumi? It has the scimitar's crit range also!
