Zylph caught Stu and I bar hopping (It was Stu's birthday). :)

We will also be bringing a friend so by my count that is about 13 people confirmed to come. There are always people that just show up, so It is a good thing that so many people have stepped up to do some GMing we may need a few...

Saw at least one person who didn't know where Hillside is...

See you guys at 5pm... starting at 6pm sharp pretty please... gotta work at 7:30am Sunday

ps are we going to get t-shirts?

Only problem with that is many people refer to the Advanced Players Guide as the APG. Could get a little confusing. I *do* like APL, and my brother works for a t-shirt company so we could get them at nearly cost if the was enough interest once we agree on a name/logo. It would be cool to represent at cons. We had a pretty big crew out at SCARAB! Who's going to StellarCon?

As for hillside... I leave you guys alone for 6 hours and the plan completely changes..... I couldn't be more thrilled. I really like Nate & crew. I bet he'll be surprised at the size of the mob coming thru his door.

NAh, they got a little heads up on the size of the group yesterday. You should have seen the look on their faces when I said we had 3 tables of people (considering they have 16 person tables ...). ;)

I think they have soda and snacks and there is a restaurant next door (Chinese I think).

If we use the term "Pathfinder" and don't include the word "gamers" or something like it, random folks who hear about us will probably think we're some kind of a car club. I don't have anything against Nissan, but I'm a proud v-dub owner, so I don't want people thinking I'm a Nissan fanboy instead.

Also, this is to confirm I will be heading to World Coffee about 5pm to redirect any folks who show up there over to Hillside Games instead.

Silver Crusade 4/5

The resterant next door isn't bad but I believe hillside has a no outside food policy. Water is usually ok but don't expect to be eating a meal while gaming.

Scarab Sages 1/5

Thats weird, cause the D&D encounters guys would bring in food all the time. If thats policy its a fairly new one.

It may be an old one :) I know at the old location we couldn't bring in food, and when the new one opened it operated under the same rules, but if it has changed that is awesome.

Agreed. A three table turn out was really nice. Especially since we had an unexpected GM show up (thanks and welcome, btw :) ). Hopefully we can maintain this level moving forward. :)

Silver Crusade

Great time last night. Thanks Dain for another superlative GM'ing job. And your cousins/good luck charms did great too. For my part, they're welcome any time!

My take on Hillside Games...first of all, thanks to ya'll who set it up...well done! Random observations - the people working there were great...tables worked, but a little crowded, food/drinks not great...it was very loud and distracting (ok I admit it...I'm turning into an old fart)...and surprisingly, a very limited selection of Pathfinder-related merchandise. I'm not complaining, just being objective. It is a significant improvement over WC. But there is still room for improvement.

Informal survey...would people be interested in gathering at a place where we'd have to bring or arrange our own food and drinks, but with plenty of room to spread out and not have to worry about noise, either our own or others'? I wonder if there's some clubhouse/community center-type place out there we could latch on to. Not saying I have a specific place in mind...just wondering if the group thinks this angle might be worth looking in to...

Silver Crusade

Question for you GMs out there (and experienced players in general). Charm Person spell...how does it play out in game? Is it essentially an automatic "attack the guys I don't like" kind of thing? Or is there more to it?

Liberty's Edge

I had a blast last night. Best session for me since Dink ran Frostfur Captives the very first week. I hadn't gamed with anyone else at the table before, and once again it was a great group of players, and an excellent GM.

The quality of players and GMs in this group continues to knock my socks off. If I'd gamed with folks this good for my entire gaming career, I wouldn't have drifted in and out of the hobby so many times.

For Eaghen and Aravandor, who've expressed interest in getting on the GMing train:
Master of the Fallen Fortress looks like a promising module to run for new (or rusty) GMs. It's shorter than a scenario and only has one tier to contend with. Looks like a great way to get your GMing feet wet. It's now at the top my list of things to run whenever I GM again.

"Eaghen wrote:

I've looked into community centers a little. Asheville Parks & Rec runs about half a dozen of them. Here's a list. Thing is, for a group our size, and at the time we usually play, we'd probably have to rent the place. I've tried a few times to find out how much that would cost, but can't ever manage to get a live person on the telephone.

One thing I'm unclear on with Hillside is whether they would have room for us on a regular basis, or if we happened to catch them on a weekend where they were less busy than usual.

In general though, I think having a variety of venues available to us is a good thing. The more places we can choose from, the less likely that a Magic release tournament or Bele Chere leaves us with no place to game on a weekend that we'd really like to.

Hello every one! How's it going!

I posted this on the General Discussion board under Rule Verification: Martial Weapons Proficiency. If you would like to respond you can respond just to out group or the Pathfinder Society.

Hope that ya'll have a good day!

John

Rule verification:

During the Pathfinder game last night there was a question about the Martial Weapons Proficiency feat. I took the Martial Weapon Proficiency (Slashing). My understanding is if I choose this feat I would choose a TYPE of weapon. The GM ruled that you only choose one weapon. I just want to make sure that I understand the rule going forward.

Here is what the feat states:

Core Rule Book, page 130 wrote:

Martial Weapon Proficiency: Choose a TYPE of martial weapon. You understand how to use that TYPE of martial weapon in combat.

Benefit: You Make attack rolls with the selected weapon (without the non-proficient penalty).

Normal: When using a weapon with which you are not proficient, you take a –4 penalty on attack rolls.

This is telling me to choose a TYPE of weapons. If you look on page 144 of the Core Rule book, under the Weapon Qualities section it states:

Core Rule Book, page 144 wrote:

TYPE: Weapons are classified according to the TYPE of damage they deal: B for bludgeoning, P for piercing, or S for slashing. Some monsters may be resistant or immune to attacks from certain types of weapons.

Some weapons deal damage of multiple types. If a weapon causes two types of damage, the type it deals is not half one type and half another; all damage caused is of both types. Therefore, a creature would have to be immune to both types of damage to ignore any of the damage caused by such a weapon.

In other cases, a weapon can deal either of two types of damage. In a situation where the damage type is significant, the wielder can choose which type of damage to deal with such a weapon.

Also if you look at the weapons chart, pages 142 and 143. The are three groups of weapons, simple martial, and exotic. And each group of weapons has the following qualities:

Quote:

Cost - DMG(S) - DMG(M) – Critical - Range – Weight - TYPE – Special

Here again the weapon has a Type: B for bludgeoning, P for piercing, or S for slashing.

If choosing this feat means you only choose one weapon, (like Longsword or Battle Axe), than the fighter really cleans house with 36 feats from the Core Rule Book, and 8 more from the Advanced Player’s Guide, at first level fighter.

Martial Weapon Proficiency (Axe, Throwing)
Martial Weapon Proficiency (Hammer, Light)
Martial Weapon Proficiency (Handaxe)
Martial Weapon Proficiency (Kukri)
Martial Weapon Proficiency (so on )

This is just an observation, not a criticism. My goal is to understand the rule.

I can say that it was the first time I successfully climbed a crumbling tower with a horse. Re- Martial Weapon Proficiency

If you look at the text of the analogous feat, Exotic Weapon Proficiency, it reads "Choose one type of exotic weapon, such as the spiked chain or whip. You understand how to use that type of exotic weapon in combat, and can utilize any special tricks or qualities that exotic weapon might allow."

As such, since the text is identical to the feat description for Martial Weapon Proficiency except for the exemplars, it is pretty clear that Martial Weapon Proficiency is limited to a single Martial Weapon.

And you are correct sir. Question answered in the parallel thread.

Hello all,

Last night was a lot of fun. Great GMing, great turnout, great games, decent venue.

Nansen: Do you know anyone who has Master of the Fallen Fortress? If not, I may invest in it for my GMing debut. If I get it, I'll be happy to send it your way after I've run it. Was that the module that you guys ran last night? Thanks for the advice!

Eaghen: I agree about Hillside being a little rough around the edges on the food/drink angle. Noise didn't bother me at all though. The space seemed a bit daunting at first, but the cardies cleared out pretty well once our reserved table time rolled around. World Coffee is better for food and drinks, but I'd say Hillside was better in every other sense. Like Nansen said - the real question is whether or not we'll be able to reserve a table there on Saturday nights.

I looked into the public library and also into community centers and from what I can tell, no public resources are open late in the evening when we like to play. We'd have to move the meetings to early Saturday. I'd be all for it because my time is not constrained on the average Saturday, but I fear that many of our group would have scheduling issues...

As far as location is concerned, I suggest that we try the battery park bookstore we've all been mentioning at least once. It's worth a try anyway. I'd be perfectly happy with Hillside again for the next meeting if we can get the necessary space for it.

Thorynn: Thanks for the suggestion of getting the Patherfinder Beginner's Box. I think I'll do that. I should have the basics that I need to GM once I do.

Is anyone else from Asheville planning on making it out to Connooga from Feb. 17-19 in Chatanooga? Just curious...

Liberty's Edge

1) Wonderful game! Those two kids that were there (I'm trying to recall the names, one was Jacob, and one I can only remember as "holy hell that half-orc is killing everything!") were surprisingly good players, and, albeit a bit direct in their desire to kill everything that moved, were at least able to back up that attitude.
2) I think Hillside worked rather well. Even being a bit noisy, I never really had trouble. Was a little crowded for a while, but not enough to pose real problems, and the only issue with food I had was the damn pizza place losing our order -_-

3) Aravandor, I believe I'm headed to Connooga, but it kinda depends on Jason. I told him if he can find us a hotel where the hotel + entry fee were less than $100, I was in.

Dear All,

I am sorry I missed out on PFS this past weekend. It sounds like Hillside was a good locale, all things considered.

Aravandor, Master of the Fallen Fortress is a free download here.

Battery Park Book Exchange, Asheville Mall Barnes and Noble (still waiting to hear on this one), or Hillside for the 2/18 game?

I'm not going to Connooga. Vaya con Erastil all who do go.

Eaghen, I'm digging your flyer. Let's do it.

I'd say Hillside for the 18th (I can stop over on my way home today to verify availability).

Eaghen, I took a look at the file and the blurry aspects you saw on the printout were most likely due to enlarging the image to 8.5x11 (it's currently about half that size). If you can send me the image files used in putting it together, I can put together a larger version which should solve that issue (unless the original image elements are all tiny, in which case that's another issue entirely).

Scarab Sages 1/5

I think hillside makes more sense, and is easier for parking and adding potential new lodge members. I don't know if you guys noticed, but there were several people checking out what was going on with our tables. I think the flyers will be a big help.

If we can make it a regular thing, I can't imagine the lodge not growing. We could end up owning saturday night at hillside! "Cardies" beware! Did I read that we had those tables reserved? If thats a possibility, I would suggest we try and get two of the long tables (preferably one without the 4' fluorescent bulbs) for 2/18.

Liberty's Edge 2/5

Agree with the idea that, if we can make our presence felt and make sure that we encourage all our players and GMs to make purchases at Hillside (thus, engendering goodwill from the owners of the store), that we could definitely make our mark on Hillside.

We have a surprisingly tenacious, steady attendance and with the untapped capacity for growth in the Asheville Area nerd populace (some of these flyers around UNCA/AB Tech would be awesome, as well as in the fantasy sections of the local libraries and of course at the other game/hobby/comic book stores, we could really be a thing.

I don't know if you guys have noticed, but we already have the longest thread in the PF Lodge section of the message boards, and we're not slowing down. We are adding new players and maintaining our numbers better than Dink, Zylph, and I could ever have dreamed.

Thorynn- let us know about your proposed offshoot on Tuesday(?) nights. The more, the merrier, and we can see about sharing scenarios between GMs so that no one is shouldering more of the financial burden than they want to.

Scarab Sages 1/5

I have a sneaking suspicion that if 18-24 pathfinder players show up regularly, Nate might start keeping some more Pathfinder stuff in stock. In the meantime, buying some drinks from them doesn't hurt.

As far as an alternate night for people who are interested in PFS but can't do saturdays, that may still be in the planning stages as far as my involvement is concerned. I'm blessed with a pretty tolerant wife, but currently I'm playing in two weekly (usually) homebrew campaigns, and APL, so she may put her foot down. I may not be able to lead the charge on that just yet. I also want to keep studying the core rulebook so I know more of the rules off the top of my head rather than having to look so much stuff up.

Grand Lodge 5/5 * Venture-Captain, New Zealand—Dunedin

Well now, I might be able to step in and be of service here.

I'm very interested in starting up Tuesday or Thursday PFS, and maybe starting it up closer to the Fletcher/Arden/Hendersonville area.

It'd need to be strictly over by 11PM, but I'm currently hunting around for spaces. What I need to know is, who is down for Tuesday? Different day? Bueller? Bueller?

Hey guys,
I was the guy who ran Master of the Fallen Fortress last Saturday. Great game by the way to those involved. I've been running games for several years, though that was my first time running a Pathfinder Society Game. Could someone walk me through on how the report process works? I've got 4 1st level characters who survived the adventure who need the XP.

I've got character names and their pathfinder society numbers, though I did not get their factions. For those of you who played in the Fallen Fortress on the 4th of Feb, I need your factions. No prestige points sadly, there are none to be had on Fallen Fortress.

Thanks

Hello all (and Dinketry, especially) -

I am a newbie to Pathfinder and cannot make the weekends up in Asheville. Thorynn directed me to this thread and I would love to play in the Hendersonville area on either Thursday or Tuesday.

I'm making a new character and playing my first game this Wednesday.

Grand Lodge 5/5 * Venture-Captain, New Zealand—Dunedin

Awesome! I'm seeking possible locations for a game. The Deck Box (Fletcher Flea Market) is the only gaming story in the area, but a likely possibility. I've also toyed with the idea of Jongo Java (coffee house on Main St in Hendo) as well as Flat Rock Coffee.

I don't know how many we might have, but I'd like to have at least 4 who would be willing to come out on a weekday before setting a date.

Ask around this Wednesday if it's something that you'd be interested in. I, of course, will ask as well.

Thorynn and I play with a group of 4 or 5 that try different games but have done D&D 4e pretty regularly every week (or other week) throughout the last year. I'll definitely check with them.

Silver Crusade 5/5

I'll second Thoryn's comment about Wife aggro... as much as I love gaming with you guys and would almost any time if it were up to me. My wife is at her limit with every other Saturday and my homebrew game once a month.

Dink good luck with getting a second night going and I'll pass along anyone that can't do our Saturday to you I promise :).

Can't wait for the 18th... good luck at the Conn for those who go.

Peace,
Luth

Well hell, I drive 50 miles out to game on Saturdays in Ashevegas. I could probably do hendersonville on a week day more often than not. I'd get zero wife aggro as long as I made it home before 1am... I might spring for Tuesdays in Golarion.

Eaghen: still not 100% sure about making it to connooga, but I'm trying. Assuming I scrape together the cash, it'll be just Saturday & Sunday for me. So no real car-pooling possibility there. Just wanted to keep an eye out for familiar faces, that's all.

Cheliax also lends itself to Lawful Neutral with a bad streak.

Silver Crusade 5/5

I was thinking Chaotic Neutral for this guy cause of his Int, Wis, Cha scores I see him as unhinged and a bit depraved...

Also... just read this...

Um can someone say "Enlarge Person on a Polearm Master = Gameover for the bad guys..." you would threaten soooo much and do mega damage
