Yeah, we've seen a lot of the more plain font options. Let's see what #6 looks like. Tho if there is a third option 6 that also wins this will be the devil's lodge. Or a very least Asmodeous' rumpus room.

Ok guys: give me your worst.. I have a few more variations to work up, but are we moving in the right direction here?

Nanson had a good Idea when he mentioned an all caps font. Even just doing the first letter of a word in script would be cool too, it could be a a cool way to draw attention to the APL abbreviation.

Sugestion: Try the txt placement you had in the first logo before you changed the font it is less crowded and may allow for greater legibility.

I had said we could try a script as a suggestion I know how hard it is to use in a logo, so don't feel like you need to stick with it. I have designed a few logos and fonts are almost always the hardest part. :) great work sofar thanks for the effort your putting into it.

Liberty's Edge

I notice Asheville is in a larger point size than Pathfinder Lodge. Was that for space considerations, or were you trying to emphasize Asheville? I ask because I actually think Pathfinder Lodge needs the emphasis, not Asheville.

Jake's idea of using a script font just for the capital letters is something I'd like to see. The uppercase "A" in that font is really nice looking, and I'd hate to lose it, despite my previous comments about readability.

Silver Crusade

Guys, I am currently working on a project with a large group of "customers" who often have different opinions on how something should be done. The ongoing discussions, while having merit and raising valid points, always leads to what I like to call "analysis paralysis".

We can analyze it to death and get nowhere, or we can just let Aravandor come up with 2 or 3 final designs and then vote on them as they are. I recommend the latter course.

Scarab Sages 1/5

Thats an awesome idea. I really like the main concept. I'd be OK with whatever font you guys feel is best.

Sadly, I won't be able to GM tomorrow as some old friends are coming in to town this weekend. Edric, if you've got that 3rd level mod, I think there should be enough guys for a 3rd level table. Sorry to bail so late!

Liberty's Edge

The only thing I have prepped is Citadel of Flame, and I've only prepared it for subtier 1-2. There's no way I can get another scenario, or even subtier 4-5, prepped by tomorrow. I'm just too rusty at GMing, and too new to GMing PFS, to pull off such a last-minute switch. Sorry.

Prepping subtier 4-5 for Citadel of Flame wouldn't salvage the 3rd+ level table anyway, since I've already run that scenario for about half of the folks who said they had characters of level 3 or higher.

Not sure how the GMing will shake out, but I'll be at Hillside with a lvl 5 and a few lvl 1 characters.

Silver Crusade 4/5

Hey guys i'm here at StellarCon, I got in late (9pm) and played a quick game of Firefly then hung out w/ the SCARAB guys. The RPG room was real slow last night but Dell got in a game of We Be Goblins!

Best of luck to you guys on figuring out your tables... I've been cramming to get ready to GM. So I'll be ready to run a few new scenarios when I come back. :)

Had fun tonight. Congrats to the fellas in my group for surviving... Fear the Magus...

No freaking kidding. Fear is an understatement.

Liberty's Edge

I had fun tonight too.

Luth, welcome to the APL GM's club. I'd teach you the secret handshake, but no one's taught it to me yet.

Before I say anything else, someone left behind a purple d20. It's a darker purple on one side than the other. I have it, and will gladly return it to its proper owner.

To satisfy the curiosity of those who couldn't make it tonight, we had two tables, both I believe at Tier 1-2. I had five players and I'm pretty sure Luth had six. So 13 people total including GMs. No PCs at my table died. (Drat, there goes my reputation as a killer GM :-).

My players were, as always with PFS Asheville, excellent. Thanks to Forrest, Goon, Stu, and Zlyphryx's two nephews for being fun, cooperative, and easygoing players. A special call out to Stu for managing to (without being asked that I'm aware of) help with the other players' Chelaxian faction mission, while playing a paladin, without performing any act that was even close to being in violation of the paladin's code.

I feel tonight went well, and in large part because I learned a lot from my last GMing experience, from the feedback I received from the players, and from several GMing advice threads here at Paizo. In particular Painlord's How to be a Better Judge thread.

Some things that I did that I think made this session better:

- Predrawing the maps on a Flip Mat. This probably saved more time than anything else I did.
- Making "cheat sheets" with notes on how spells and magic items worked. This made spellcasters (a weak area for me) so much easier to run.
- Running the scenario at the subtier I had prepped for, and that was correct for the PCs involved.
- Starting my prep work on Sunday instead of the middle of the week.
- Printing out stats for monsters from the PRD instead of running from my copy of the Bestiary.
- During combat stating not just whose turn it was, but also who would be next. Got this from Painlord's thread. I will always do this in the future.
- Making a checklist of the faction missions, and marking off as they were accomplished, or noting when they were not.
- Explaining to the players before the scenario started about the two faction missions, and that Prestige Points were only earned in this scenario from completing factions missions. Also clarifying that on the faction mission handouts, each large paragraph described one of the two missions.
- Deciding in a few cases that looking up the exact, obscure, deeply hidden rule wasn't worth the time and instead just ballparked it.
- Prefilling as much info on the Chronicle sheets as possible at the beginning of the session, but not delaying the actual start of the session to do so.

Silver Crusade

Awesome time last night. Great job GMing Luth! And it was great to run with Zylph, Aravandor and QC. Two things I learned...
1. We had a balanced party - three 1st levels and a third level. I thought going in that a subtier 1-2 run would be easy. It was most definitely NOT! We nearly TPK'd. The lesson I learned is "don't be complacent...ever. Never go into a scenario without scroll buffs and whatnot, even if you think you won't need them...because you just might be surprised"
2. Never try to intimidate a horse by showing him your privates.

Silver Crusade 5/5

I like that the scenario we played lulled the players into complacentcies and then WHAM... the last encounter jumped all over them.... muhahaha!!!!

Yeah, that last encounter was shocking. ;)

Wow. That was perfectly punny... ten second lag then lmao

** spoiler omitted **...

Those are some excellent tips. I recently struggled with running a caster from the GM side of the screen. Definitely takes more preparation than running 4e baddies.

As far as initiative tracking is concerned, I've got a little system I observed at a D&D encounters game. It not only tells you who is next, it's a visual representation of the order that can be referenced at any time. Clothespins are cheap, too!

Grand Lodge 5/5 * Venture-Captain, New Zealand—Dunedin

Reporting for this past Saturday completed. Sgt Dinketry signing off.

Liberty's Edge

Sgt. Dinketry's Lonely Hearts Club Band?

Does that mean we can use "a splendid time is guaranteed for all" as our Lodge slogan?

Thorynn, clever idea about the clothespins. Hillside's tables are a bit crowded for it, but at a venue with more table space, I can see it working well. I think I'd need to print out labels though. My handwriting with a Sharpie is usually illegible even to me.

It did get me thinking though. I wonder if it would be helpful to announce the next two players coming up instead of just the next one. As in "Joe, it's your turn. Jane's next, then Bill."

The Exchange 2/5

It'll probably be a while before we have enough people up to level 5 for the module, but when we do I was thinking of running Carrion Hill. Would anyone be interested in playing?

Scarab Sages 1/5

Yeah, man! My highest just hit third, but by the summer I'm sure a lot of us will be hitting 5th, and I think some of the guys who regularly hit up the cons are already there. The more GMs the better!

Silver Crusade 4/5

I'm at lvl4, 1 more Senario and I hit 5. Stu just lvled to 4 I think...

Liberty's Edge

I probably won't have a character anywhere near 5th level by the time you guys get enough players, but I'm a fan of the Modules in general. I'm also glad to see you thinking about GMing, QC. I think you'd be good at it.

Suggestion though. Ask all the players to bring a SASE to their first session of the module. Then if they can't make the remaining session(s), you have an easy way to get them their partial-credit Chronicles.

I've probably mentioned it way too much, but I have a Rogue 4/Witch 1 I'd love to play whenever we get a lvl 5 game going. Until then, I am happy running my lvl 1 fighter or cleric.

And btw: WTF is a SASE?

Liberty's Edge

Self Addressed Stamped Envelope.

It was a thing we used to hand out back in the stone ages so folks would write to us. Kind of like an e-mail address, but with better grammar and spelling.

(I feel very old now.)

Liberty's Edge

Also, Aravandor, I think we've got the people to support playing in subtiers that are right for your 5th level character. Right now it just takes a little more planning and luck to get one of those tables to happen. As a few more folks level up, it'll get easier for those tables to make.

Though I'd also suggest that anyone who has at least a 3rd level character consider giving GMing a whirl. Having more GMs, even folks who only GM occasionally, will help keep this Lodge going.

ROFL!!! Ah yes, I've heard legends of a time when the ancients had a primitive form of communications network where information was passed from one user to another by actually traversing physical space before the advent of telegraph. I believe it was powered by horses (they called them "ponies" in those days). I didn't stay in boy scouts long enough to get the "antique communications" badge.

LOL! I guarantee you that I'm not the only one who would have wondered about that. That's ok. Just leave it to me to ask the dumbest questions everybody.

And you're right. I do need to GM some day. I'll have to hijack someone's mini collection when I do though.

Liberty's Edge

Those times deserve to told in legend. You could, if you had friends who could write, go to your mailbox and occasionally find things there that were not demands for money. It was glorious I tell you.

Just to be clear, I wasn't singling you out for GMing duty. Your comments just reminded me to ask. :-) And I've got some minis I've started bringing along, so if I'm there you'd be welcome to use them.

Scarab Sages 1/5

SASE is a really good idea. Now if I can only find the ancient currency of stamps. Sounds like a quest in itself!

Any word on Blitzkreig space being available for the 18th?

Not yet, but I'm hoping to hear something by this Saturday.

I sent an email to Nillic at TWT last week just to find out when TWT would be opening and see if he had any thoughts on potential gaming spaces. In his response he mentioned that it wasn't likely the space at Blitzkrieg could be used to game between now and then.

I echo "that would be excellent!"

Somethings I learned from PFS this week sofar:

1. I spend way to much time on descriptions and RP scenes. I have fun getting descriptions of the PCs and letting them describe there actions in detail. It's great for APL North (we had our first few games this week) but when you spend a third of the sessions on the first scene it means you will run over the time limit. :) But before you guys freek, I do know how to scale it back when there is a time limit.

2. I GM mostly in the third person; I start with a first person sentence then switch to a description of what the NPC says.

Wow! I had no idea! That's great. Congrats on getting it going. Is it a relatively static table, or is there room for people to come and go? I might be interested in playing some mid-week games from time to time.

We'd love to have ya, but at the current location it's not possible. We are meeting at a home and we can only host a few ppl. If we find a better location you'll be the first to know. :)

Liberty's Edge

Is it too early to ask what the GMing situation is for the 17th? I'm assuming we aren't taking the night off for Saint Patrick's Day.

Liberty's Edge

Remember that Citadel of Flame session I ran back in January? Well that is the session that keeps on teaching.

Discussions after that session raised some questions about rounding in APL calculations, in particular when the APL ends in a decimal of .5, and whether we were legally allowed to play up. So I asked about it in PFS General.

The rules have changed slightly between then and now. While I'm still not certain if we calculated the APL correctly for that session, Campaign Director Michael Brock did say that when an APL calculation ends in a decimal of .5, then it's up to the players to choose which way they wanna round.

Scarab Sages 1/5

Excellent! Me and some of the APL-South guys were having some questions along those lines. Thanks for doing the dirty work!

Liberty's Edge

Cool. I was hoping that information would prove useful to others in the Lodge.

Liberty's Edge 2/5

Bad news, and good news, everyone.

The Bad News is that Dink is out of action for the foreseeable future. He may return someday, but is indefinitely not going to be involved in the Asheville PFS at this point.

I am really sorry to be the bearer of such news, and hope you will all join me in wishing him a speedy return to us.

The good news is that he has given me temporary custody of all of his PF materials- books galore. I can do a thorough accounting of what he has, mark them appropriately, and then I will be glad to be a sort of Asheville PFS Lending Library. Folks let me know what books they'd like a chance to set down and really dig into, and I will get it to you at the next PFS game, to be returned the session after that.

Cheers all! I'll be back to a more regular attendance of PFS games just as soon as Carolina either wins or loses in the NCAAs.

Silver Crusade

Dink, If you happen to read this, safe and happy trails and hope you can make it back soon.

Liberty's Edge

I am sorry to hear that Dink has had to drop out for now. Strange, if you're in contact with Dink, please thank him for everything he's done in getting this Lodge up and running and for GMing so much. He will be missed, and I hope he can rejoin us soon.

Silver Crusade 5/5

Dink fair thee well, whereever you are.

Gentlemen,
We need a game plan for Saturday. Sound off if you plan to attend and in what capacity.

I'll be there playing a summoner or something else if needed.

What say you?......

Sovereign Court

I should be there with the GM hat on.

Sovereign Court

I will be attending, as well my roommate.

Last I heard, Dudley is planning on running this Saturday.

Silver Crusade 4/5

I am sadly out of town this week, it has been a month sence I last played with the Grand APL. I've run lots over that time but been on the other side of the screen vary little...

I'm there with a fighter 1 or cleric 1 or rogue 4/witch 1.

Dark Archive 2/5

ill be there most likely with what ever i need to be i have characters from 1st through 4th if need be.

Silver Crusade

I will be there on Saturday...finally finalized the Singapore trip but worked a little schmooze and not heading out till Monday. I would be willing to try my hand at GMing 1st Steps part 1 IF (big if) we are desperate for another GM, but would really prefer to wait until after I get home from SG. If I am able to play, I have a 1st level Pally, 2nd level bard and 3rd level wiz locked and loaded.

One other thing...we had a respondant to the flyer and he said he'd be there on Saturday as well...he'll have (obviously) a 1st level character.
