Thanks guys! You all rock!

Silver Crusade 5/5

So I've been looking at scenarios to run... How does #2-21: The Dalsine Affair strike everyone?

Dark Archive 2/5

i have i pally level 2 pally i can run up or a level 4 barbarian/druid i can run to so count me in

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Good suggestions, Nansen. I'll bring my lvl 5 (I have no objections to playing down if everyone else is ok with it) and I'll bring some lvl 1 chars. I'll go wherever works best and play a pregen if need be. Let the chips fall as they may.

Silver Crusade 5/5

#2-21: The Dalsine Affair has been purchased and I am reading it now... I'll be preparing tier 1-2 for the 3rd... I hope I have at least 4 folks who want to play at level 1 or 2 :)

Scarab Sages 1/5

YOU GUYS! We need to organize some PFS tables for GeekOut 2012!!! It looks like they're trying to be fanaticon, but its super-late notice, but as the resident RPG geeks, we gotta represent! Who's with me? And how do we setup a site on warhorn for PFS table registration!?

Liberty's Edge 2/5

I think I'll be joining you guys this coming week. I need to get Buliwyf a little more burn so he can join all these nifty folks at the 3rd Level tables!

Silver Crusade 5/5

Food for thought...

What accent do you ascribe to the different ethnicities of Golarion?

Here is my take on it...

Chelaxian: British... not the queens english more Cockney

Garundi: Middle Eastern

Keleshites: ??? this one is tough.. Middle Eastern too, or maybe Italian

Kellid: Russian

Mwangi: Jamaican

Shoanti: Native American

Taldan: French

Tian: Chinese

Ulfen: Norse/Swedish or German depending on origin

Varisian: Romanian/Gypsy

Vudrani: Indian

Dwarves: Redneck... yes I said it... Dwarves in my book speak southern

Elves: Queens English... slow and deliberate

Gnomes: Squeaky :)

Halflings: Scottish/Irish

Half-Elves: whatever their human parents ethnicity is

Half-Orc: whatever their human parents ethnicity is, but slurred by tusks

Hope you enjoyed reading this, and I welcome your input...

This isn't a suggestion for your roleplay, or even a strong opinion, just an idea and growing viewpoint.

Peace, and can't wait to GM Saturday,
LUTH

I wrote Del, and he's going to be at another event on this weekend, so PFS is up to APL! I'll look in to setting up the warhorn for the event, and get with the organizers to make sure we've got some space available. We'll need GMs and players! Hopefully we'll have t-shirts with our logo by then. This could be big guys! Let's make something awesome happen!

Grand Lodge 5/5 * Venture-Captain, New Zealand—Dunedin

So, a mini-Oscars party went down last night, and in between trying to figure out what the hub-bub was about "Bridesmaids" and wondering if anyone in Asheville saw "The Artist", I forgot to call the APL logo vote closed.

Now it's closed!

And the winner is.....#6! Thorynn's design!!!

This.

Kudos to all who designed and any who voted. Let's crank out some t-shirts and stickers, stationaries and coffee mugs, people!

Woo-hoo!

Scarab Sages 1/5

Whoa, really?! Cool! It's kind of just a sketch tho. Aravandor if I could impose upon you to make it a super awesome vector graphic, that would be awesome. I contacted my brother (he works at a t-shirt co.) and the art dept. there prefers vector graphics. We should definitely have them before GeekOut 2012!

Alright, I've got Luth down for two mediums. Let's get some preorder sizes! Not sure on the price, but it won't be a lot, cause we'll be buying them at pretty much cost.

a request: Now can we see some variations on that design? I'd love to see how the die looks at different scales and a few font variations.

All of the designs we voted on were wildly different. Scaling the die can make a huge difference or switching to a script... I'm not trying to be difficult but I have had a bit of experience in designing Logos and I don't want us to start printing what we have until we go through the design process. it sucks to look at branding and think, "We should have done this..."

I'm not just saying this to the people that submitted the designs, I want to jump on the team now that we have a design to go off of.

Sure, I'm fine with vectorizing (is that a word?) this and trying some variations. I stepped out of the process for a while there because I felt like I was trampling out other peoples' ideas. Give me a day or two and I'll post some variations on that with script font and different scales for the d20.

Scarab Sages 1/5

Dain had some cool ninja star like compass roses. I don't know if you want to try and integrate those in a variation or two, but I thought they were awesome!

Thanks for all your hard work, man! I'm buying your shirt (or two)!

I'll work those roses Dain made too.

Scarab Sages 1/5

So Hillside is being pretty wack . I'd kind of like to pressure them to give the domain name to the Wyvern's Tale. How do you guys feel about it?

Silver Crusade 5/5

Wow what a jerk move.... As soon as Wyvern's tale opens I suggest we drop Hillside and never look back. That is sooo not cool.

I'd almost vote for not gaming there ever again if we could round up a new spot, but it is too short notice for that.

Personally I'm not interested in talking to them about it at all. Let Wyvern's Tale folk sue him and see how he likes it.

Dain and I were talking about that last night. I always felt weird at Hillside and now I have confirmation, I'm so glad I didn't buy my stuff for Pathfinder there...

The new store will get my support, I can't wait for it to open so we can drop Hillside...

What a bunch of %#&#&$&@ over at hillside. That was a major mistake. I'll never buy anything from them. I say we vote against them with our feet and wallets and support the new store.

Liberty's Edge

Guys, before we bring out the torches and perhaps accidentally burn a bridge, I'd just like to point out that as of right now, Hillside is pretty much the only place that can accommodate us.

I've seen a lot of game stores come and go over the years in Asheville. There's no guarantee this new store will last. In fact the odds are that it won't.

Hillside's been kind to host us. If we make a venue change in the future, I think it would be wise to leave on as good a terms as possible, in case we need to go back to Hillside at some point.

Scarab Sages 1/5

Yeah, sadly confronting them is probably wrong. Burning bridges and all that. At the same time... erg. Its frustrating. I'll keep it bottled up for now, but I'm glad you guys are in support of GTFO when the opportunity arises. The cardies can have it as far as I'm concerned.

Grand Lodge 5/5 * Venture-Captain, New Zealand—Dunedin

Nansen has an excellent point. No torches just yet.

And on that note, I will not be able to partake in 'GM Day' festivities this coming Saturday - I'll be in Charlotte! Game on without me, trusty APLers.

And no effigies. Please.

-Dink

Liberty's Edge

I get where you're coming from Thorynn. 20-year-old me would've been lighting his torch as fast as anyone else here. In fact as I was writing that post there was a voice in my head that kept saying "sellout".

Anyway, Dink, hope you have a good time in Charlotte. Assuming the Mayans are wrong, they'll be another GM's Day next year for you to enjoy.

BTW, if you still have that Chronicle sheet for me, is there someone else you could send it along with? Or can I meet you somewhere to pick it up?

Also, with Dink out of town, who's handling the event creation & reporting this time?

Silver Crusade 5/5

Dink you'll be missed...

Nansen good point...

Lips buttoned around them, but I'm not buying them a christmas card...

We'll just quietly use the space and politely not show up when the west asheville store opens and hope that they can make a go of it.

Not buying stuff is plenty protest enough... even if all I bought before was sodas and fig newtons hehe.

The Exchange 2/5

I've been speaking with the people involved at Wyvern's Tale, and they are very interested in hosting us on Saturdays.

Sovereign Court

I completely agree with Edric on this one. We really don't have a viable alternative for location, so as much as it ticks me off, we'll have to bite our collective tongues until TWT opens. At that time, I would wholeheartedly support a move to the new location.

Anyone know who is opening TWT?

EDIT: Aaaaand ... answered by Questioncontent while I typed ... ;)

Silver Crusade

All I can say is...<snort> how childish on the part of Hillside. Like folks with the chutzpah and wherewithal to open a new gaming store are going to be worried about a few domain names not being available. I checked. the-wyverns-tale.com is still available. So is wyverns-tale.com. I'd imagine there are countless other variations on the theme. All Hillside has accomplished is to alienate a fair number of potential clients of their own.

Scarab Sages 1/5

A the guys on the enWorld forums pointed out, it's not a great name anyway. It's the principle of the thing.

Its got me pretty upset. I blogged about it . I'll show up on saturday, but if I get banned, you guys know why.

Grand Lodge 5/5 * Venture-Captain, New Zealand—Dunedin

I'm still able to do the paperwork for this session, and the event number is #10960 for all those GMs who want to know....

Just get me all the numbers for the event via email (or here if you'd like) and I'll get it posted toute de suite.

I admit that I am sad that I won't be able to trot out Vlardheim with the other 3rd level and uppers....but c'est la vie.

We should be certain to express our displeasure in written form to the CEO of Hillside Games, getting signatures from all APL people. That should send a clear message that immature and paranoid business practices that damage the open market won't be tolerated, in the glorious name of capitalism.

Yes, yes, spoken like a true Qadiran faction operative.

Shadow Lodge 2/5

I wouldn't say anything to them about it. They are likely to just pull the plug on APL gaming in their store. We had really, really bad experiences with the GMs for D&D Encounters there, asked if anything could be done about it and the answer was more or less "you're stuck with what we've got". I quit going then and there. Just buy your stuff on-line for now until the new place opens.

Hello guys, this is Simeón, one of 2 proprietors of The Wyvern's Tale. We really appreciate your support. We realize the name is a bit strange-while it is true that the original store we are buying out had a focus on board games (and we intend to continue that focus) we are both avid role-players and want to support the very under-supported role-playing community in our area. To that end, we have decided upon the name of The Wyvern's Tale to evoke the sense of a fantasy tavern. It may not be immediately recognized by many non-gamers, we believe the name and our signage will be intriguing enough to draw in foot-traffic. Our focus is entirely local and we will be networking to that end and we could really use your support to that end. We want to have heavier RPG support for the area and as a DM and player in several Pathfinder games having the APL there would be amazing. If you have any questions on the matter please email me: nillic DOT axehammer AT gmail DOT com and I'll tell you about it. Also, the ENworld post here: http://www.enworld.org/forum/news/319001-unfriendly-lgs.html has a lot of info, and we will keep posing updates on our facebook page. Thanks guys!

The name is fine by me. You could call it anything at this point, and as long as you guys have a local focus and cater to gamers, I'm there! Let us know if we can do anything to help. I would certainly love to run games RPG or board for a grand opening bash. Some of the other guys here might be up for it too. Let us know what we can do to make the opening as soon and as successful as possible!

nillic wrote:

I think it is an outstanding name. The wyvern was a heraldic device for what was once the West Country Kingdom of Wessex, and it was used as a crest on the helmets of the kings of Aragon. Today is used as a crest symbol by Cambridge University as well as numerous other institutes of higher learning. It is also part of the coat of arms for the Valencian Parliament and Government. It suggests nobility and honor, qualities that are seemingly lacking in certain sectors of the Asheville retail environment until now :)

And as far as domains are concerned, ya'll could use goatsoupforbreakfast.com for all it matters, people don't blindly type in urls when they don't know them, they google it! Now all we have to do is get The Wyvern's Tale showing up on top of Hillside in google searches...

Grand Lodge 5/5 * Venture-Captain, New Zealand—Dunedin

I have recently registered goatsoupforbreakfast.com, .org, .net, .xxx, .info, .gov, .univ, .fart, and .tebow just to make sure that no one gets that URL.

So don't try it! Or I will sue your ass.

Oops, I forgot to register goatsoupforbreakfast.ass. Now I did. So neener, neener.

Bet you paid an arm and a leg for those TLDs (and .xxx isn't cheap either).

Scarab Sages 1/5

Well there goes my goat soup business ;)

Hey guys. So it looks like I probably won't be able to make it this Saturday.

Emphasis on 'probably' - there's a chance I will make it, but odds are against me.

Best wishes.

Silver Crusade

Erin, hate it that you won't be able to make it.

On a better note though, I am definitely going to be there. My trip will not happen before next week (if it happens at all). I'll bring my 3rd Wiz and my 1st Bard and Paladin so I'm ready for whatever...

Liberty's Edge

I too will probably be there this week. My cold is mostly gone, and any residual coughing is really just a feeble attempt on the part of my lungs to escape my chest and go on spring break.

I'm hoping to play my 1st level quarterstaff wielder in Luth's game. I've also been prepping to GM The Citadel of Flame again, in case we need a 3rd table.

Font Options

Let's vote on this relatively quickly then I'll get some designs out with the d20 compass.

2 and 6 are probably the clearest and most legible, but I really like the style of 3 and 5. Those two evoke the image of an adventurer hurriedly jotting notes in a journal to me. If I had to vote, I'd personally go for number 3. Number 1 is a bit "Pirates of the Carribean" for my taste (and I hate the "A" in Asheville in that font). 4 is a bit artsy in my opinion without being totally French powdered wig-like. 7 verges on a "creepy" font and 8 almost looks like it could have been carved by a knife.

Silver Crusade 5/5

Definitely #3

I agree 3 is cool but it's not verry legible from a distance. 5 is cool looking and probaly my second favorite.

this is my official vote
I vote for #6, for me it captures a "script" feel but is legible and simple.

Scarab Sages 1/5

Font Vote
I'm for #6 as well. They're all pretty cool tho!

I'm prepping 3-2 Sewer Dragons of Absalom (which is 3rd level), but in the event I'm kicked out it might be a good idea to have a backup 3rd level scenario.

See you guys Saturday!

Silver Crusade

Aravandor, I'm OK with whatever you think looks best. You've already shown how very good your artistic talent and design skills. If you think #3 works best, that's good enough for me.

The Exchange 2/5

Number 4

Sovereign Court

#6 I think

Ok, by my count we have

1 vote for #3
1 vote for #4
3 votes for #6

So unless my counting skills have failed me, I'm going to start working on the compass using the #6 font.

Liberty's Edge

I think we're gonna have readability problems with all those choices. Script fonts have a lot of character, but they're hard to read.

I'm strongly of the opinion that the most important thing in choosing a font is readability. If you can't read the text, why do you even have text? On a t-shirt or bumper sticker, if people can't easily read the text, chances are they'll give up.

Gill Sans, if you have access to it, is one of the most readable fonts around, and in ultrabold it manages a decent amount of character. Course it gets a lot of logo use for precisely that reason.

For a good compromise that's readable and has character, you could use a serif font set in small caps. Serif fonts can have a lot of character, and small caps are more readable than lower case.

Edit: and as someone who absolutely despised critques, let me say thank you for being willing to put your work out there for all of us to comment on, and please understand that any criticims and suggestions come only from a desire to make the best logo possible, not from any desire to tear down you or your work. You have real talent, man.
