Looking for unexplored areas to drop a homebrew kingdom

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

I'm a DM of a group who took a three year detour using a Different D&D System, and after much trial, tribulation and frustration, we're going to be returning to Golarion with Pathfinder.

I've always loved the Golarion setting, but there are several creative types in our group who enjoy creating their own kingdoms, societies, factions, etc.

Having been *ahem* gone for awhile, are there any regions or areas on the Inner Sea map where we could easily drop in a homebrew kingdom or two? We did try a conversion of the Kingmaker path that didn't really work and the group wasn't real fond of the River Kingdoms area anyway, so we're looking for places outside the River Kingdoms zone.

Any help for a DM and group who's seen the light would be appreciated.

Land of the Linnorm Kings.
Varisia, the prototypical unexplored wilderness.
The shores of Thuvia and Rahadoum, if you want a more Mediterranean type area. Think Sicilian coastal lords or something.

Grand Lodge

If you cut Nex and Geb in half you'll have a huge chunk of land, either north of Nex/Geb and south of Katapesh or south of Geb/Nex on the bottom of the map.

And since you don't really need Nex and Geb -- and since neither areas have been detailed enough to show much of a difference -- and because both map areas are blank -- it may be perfect.

Sovereign Court

The River Kingdoms is another great place to insert a new realm. It's being done regularly in the canon setting anyway by upstart bandit lords...

These are all very good ideas!

I'd also suggest Iobaria -- it's a massive wilderness area east of Brevoy and the River Kingdoms (off the Inner Sea map). One of the Kingmaker APs had a very nice article that detailed the region.

I second this. I dropped my own city-state into Varisia and it's done rather well. If you familiar with the Realms at all prior to the 4th edition nonsense, it's very reminiscent of the Sword Coast.

Lost Cities has lots of places that are off the beaten trail all over the world, and since they are lost they are also unexplored.

I also don't know much about the underdark, but you could always go there, and there are whole continents that are unexplored!

Liberty's Edge

also, there is plenty of open ocean to retcon in some extra land(s) as well. also, look at the map and if there are any other areas such as ketapesh, osirion, ect that don't match your groups' tastes, go ahead and replace them. golarion is rather flexible by design.

Can you give us a general idea of what the group like in terms of challenges, atmosphere, and environment? If you can, then we may be better able to advise.

If I were in your shoes, I would ask each of your players to give you the top three specific things they want in the campaign. There are lots of wilderness areas out there for you to plop down a colony.

I know at least one group on these boards have played a RotRL - KM mashup. Using the fort found in the 3rd AP of RotRL as a starting point. You could also use the first two AP of SD or firt four of CoT to set the party up in a Town and then just go off the path letting the players have a grand adventure leaving them in charge. The campaign would have three phases: build alliances to take over the city, build the city or cities, build alliances to protect your fledgling country.

Scarab Sages

I use the sodden lands on the southern continent for my exploratory campaign. Swamps, frog & lizardmen, sunken cities, cannibals, pirates, zombies and dinosaurs all in one big bundle, hell yea!

I was going to recommend this, too! The Sodden Lands, Shackles, and Mwangi Expanse have plenty of space for another kingdom.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think Varisia will do great; we played most of the Rise of the Runelords adventure path and they are familiar with the land. We'll keep the other suggestions in mind if we need a change of scenery or climate.

Glad to be back in Golarion.
