Ranger animal companions

Age of Worms Adventure Path

I'm playing a ranger in a PF-rules Age of Worms campaign, and the group has just finished the Whispering Cairn module. We're just short of level 3, which gives me a couple more weeks to decide what animal companion I'll be taking when I hit 4. A bird of prey of some sort would fit the character thematically, but I'd like to be able to make a more informed decision.

So does anyone who has played through AoW have any recommendations as to what animal companions do or don't work out well in the campaign? Any feedback will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

There is not so much overland travel; instead, you'll be in lots of cities and dungeons. Thus, I'd recommend a dog for roleplaying reaons, however it's a poor choice mechanically. Maybe you sould go for wolf statistics, and make it appear as a big dog (neufundlander or such). Ask your DM.

Liberty's Edge

If you really enjoy having a bird of prey as an AC, you should have a look at the Falconer archetype in UC. It offers a bit more options for your little birdy (which you can get as soon as 1-st level) and seems to have a good flavor, though I am not sure whether it is as powerful as the core Ranger.

Animal companions may be a poor choice period, considering the number of worm-infested creatures in the campaign.
