This may be a bit of self-advertisement due to my own involvement, but I wanted to let everyone know about Josh Frost's new company and subsequent RPG. He just launched a Kickstarter for the project with Hugo Solis (Butterfrog) as Artist, and myself as a Developer, plus many others. If you want to see a new take on the science-fantasy genre (the fantasy world is inside a dyson sphere!), then give it a look! :)

I have always wanted someone to do a Science Fantasy using an engine that was different then the norm. I gave to the project. Let's help get this thing off the ground.

This looks awesome. Also I was amused to see that the super-ultra-mega premium pack had already found one taker.

Quantum looks really cool. Hugo's art is of cause amazing, and it looks like Joshua really has his head screwed on about what he wants to do with this setting.

I really hope that I will be able to play a mathemagician in this when it kicks off. I have so many ideas about stories and scenes I would want to play out in the world of quantum, based on the information we have so far.

Theives who pilot clockwork Dragonfly shaped ornothopters, to the castles of mighty wizards, their to steal away secrets of particle physics.

Aboriginal tribes praying to A.I. spirits of a synthetic forest, fighting alongside robotic predators, using stone aged weapons constructed of space age materials.

Probability and statistical analysis obsessed monastic orders crippled by their need to keep records of every action that takes place on quantum, in the hope that enough data will let them predict the future.

All under a miniature star, within the heart of a dyson shell.

It is worth noting that of the limited rewards, only a single "super-ultra-mega premium pack"(also officially known as a Mythic Level backer) remains. That said their are some pretty cool unlimited backer rewards availible including perks such as an additional PDF of monsters, getting to name important characters in the world, and hardcover limited edition books(numbered and signed)

Make that none of the limited rewards left - the project is over half funded already!

Whoever picked up that last mythic is a very lucky person. I missed the fact that it had gone until a few moments ago.

Well - in for a penny, in for a pound.

I've tossed in for Master level. Really looking forward to being a fly on the wall for the design process :)

65% FUNDED and we will likely tonight be seeing additional mid and high level limited contribution rewards.

Hugo --

I've talked to my gaming group about this project, and we were wondering how a group might take on a sponsorship. We could each sign up for the $150 level, or we might pool our funds for a single $1000 patronage. It would get Josh out to Iowa to hand us our copies, but only one of us would be able to participate on the design forums.

Your opinion?

Why not do the latter group pool, and just make a joint forum account? Give each person the username and password, allowing all of you to view and contribute in the design forums.

Then you can have your very own Josh come teach you the game! :)

What Blake says is the most viable option.

Opening a shared account maybe under a group name, something like: "Southern Mutants" and where you sign each post with the name of the current user would grant you all access to the forums, create a lasting group yet still personal account. Who knows, such account may start a trend :)

Also, if you manage to pool a few more players, you could get the Mythic level and get yourself more copies AND a Boxed Set, which if its for you, I'll make sure you get some double stuff in there, just don't tell Josh ;)

OH. It'll be available at retail stores in the future?

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Campaign Setting, Companion, Modules, Roleplaying Game Subscriber

It will be for retailers joining the Kickstarter, so we would appreciate if you nudged your FLGS to pledge in and get their copies ;)

Also if Quantum reaches the 25k goal, it will allow it to print more copies of the book and be able to distribute copies into a wider retailer spread, so continung pledging -regardless of the level- also contributes helping your FLGS to get their own copies.

These details are yet to be defined by Josh in the near future, so stay tuned on the Kickstarter!

Really looking forward to this game. I can't wait to read more about the nations so I can figure out how to design mine past the rough idea stage. >.>

I noticed about half an hour ago that the free lancers are going to be getting a raise, as the project hit 15k.

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Campaign Setting, Companion, Modules, Roleplaying Game Subscriber

Yup, we are past the 15k mark, not the third mark would put us all backers to get DOUBLE PRINTED COPIES of the book!!!

Thanks for the fabulous support guyns and lets keep it up to get more goodies out of this! :)

New update with more info on the Infinity engine rules, check it out!

There has never been a better time to sign up for the quantum kick starter.

At this points, the project is about $4000 dollars from reaching the double book mark.

Once the project passes that point, a pledge of $35 will get you two limited edition hard back copies of the core rule book.

Just signed on at the $35 dollar level. Next question is how do you get in on the playtest?

Pathfinder Battles Case Subscriber

Xabulba - the open playtest for all and sundry has not had a date set yet - but won't be until at least March or April-ish next year I would guess. That will be the playtest on the polished engine and system after the full blown development process that the kickstarter is funding.

I'm sure that between now and then there will be frequent updates and previews by Blake and Josh over on the Infinite website - and they have forums over there that they are actively reading and responding to as well.

Only way to get in on the early early development fine-tuning is through the Master level and above funding. With that you get access to the Development forums the day they launch (after signing an NDA) and get a much closer and more involved look at the game as it gets polished up.

Closer and closer to the 25k mark :) Spread the word and get double books!

Thanks for the support guys! :)

The game is now over 25 thousand. By contributing 35 dollars plus shipping you will receive two copies of the book.

So the core book is almost done, Infinate X studios are in the last month or so off open play test, and the game is looking pretty sweet.

And now we have the Akyrema City Kickstarter, which aims to provide an adventure and details of the largest city in the setting, Akyrema; the core of quantum.

This has been such a bummer. I created a Kickstarter after reading about Quantum here on the boards.

Essentially, Josh somehow mismanaged $42,000 and now has dropped off the world. Whether he's replied with crass defense... or silence, Quantum's been added to quite a few Failstarter lists now, like on RPG.Net.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/joshuafrost/quantum-roleplaying-game-an -all-new-science-fantas/posts/613181

The whole "two copies of the book" thing was simply too good to be true.

I'm glad I didn't invest much into it. I feel extremely bad for those who had the scratch to really invest in this amazing idea... turned into pipe dream. :(

I invested a fair amount.

But I am not bummed.

You never put money into a kickstarter, you are not prepared to never see again. It is the first rule of kickstarter.

I'd like to see my copy of the book, but if I never do, I won't cry.

I certainly will not be after a refund.

Sorry, I'm not ok with Joshua Frost taking $42,747 of gamer's money and not producing the project. Not being ok with that isn't "crying", no matter what form of patronage you look at Kickstarter as.

In Update 82, someone posted a link to file a legal complaint in WA. where Infinite X Studio is located. I see myself joining the action.

I don't care about losing a book. I care about someone potentially absconding with $42,747 (minus Kickstarters 10% cut) and acting like they have no obligation to finishing the project.

He has not acted that way.

There has been continuing work on the project including beta release of the rules though beta.

Joshua, has never said or behaved as though he had no obligation to finish. What is clear, is that the game grew to big, and I think it is fair to say he did not manage that growth well, but he has still worked towards completion in good faith. That, while large chunks of his personal life have been falling to pieces.

What you are effectively suggesting, is using the law to kick a man when he is down, for trying to do something good. You are I supposed entitled to do it, but I think I'll retain my right NOT to be THAT guy.

The project is 1 1/2 years late and has only a Beta to show. From my perspective taht looks bad.

Zombieneighbours wrote:

This is no excuse for not delivering the product. Or has he squandered the 42k and has no funds left to pay for printing and shipping?

The Mike Nystul fiasco comes to mind.

Zombieneighbours wrote:

Has he? Sure we have some kickstarter updates with completion tables etc. But we have yet to see a PDF with a Final Draft version.

Zombieneighbours wrote:

As soon as the kickstarter funded successfully this was not a hobby project anymore. from his bio I get that Josh is a professional. therefore he should act like one. Either he informs the backers that he will not be able to complete the project in the forseable future and offers refunds or he informs us about the progress he has made.

Or to explain with an example: If you are employed and have personal issues (health for example) and are not able to do you job. Do you just stay at home without alerting you employer? Or do you inform him, that you will be out of office for some time?

Zombieneighbours wrote:

But how else can we get any updates from Josh otherwise?

One Email from Josh and he could amend the situation.

Qadira RPG Superstar 2010 Top 16

Gotta admit...

I was a big supporter of this project, and I was a loyal "just have faith" fan for a while.

What's gotten to me is that Josh has been silent, after tellingus that silence is bad and that he will provide more explanations and updates, three times.

I don't think I can stand behind this any more. And besides, in the mean time, Monte Cook has given us Numenera, which is the same idea.

Tharen the Damned wrote:

EDIT: Never mind. I did a web search.

Apparently Josh wanted to cash in his street cred and strike it out solo, but ended upon not learning a thing from Nic Logue's situation.

Nick managed to turn the trainwreck around and win most of his respect back, I hope Josh will be able to do so as well.

My reply got long. I apologize in advance.

I had to re-read this a few times to understand why you feel this way.
Considering that you apparently know stuff about his personal life that we don't, I will assume you're a friend of his. It's a noble effort to defend a friend, but please don't do the rest of us a disservice by acting like the beta that was released over a year ago is being updated. It isn't. The entire website/beta has been in carbonite for over a year.

We pledged for a book. Some pledged for much more. We've been given a free PDF of a Beta.

I'd agree with you whole-heartedly about giving Joshua some slack, if he would remotely try to stay in touch with backers. A few honest (not misleading release talk) words about what's going on would have made the difference to me and I'm sure to other backers as well.

But not only has he continued to be inactive, but the website being over a year outdated; and the fact that he hasn't logged into Kickstarter in over two months should show you how there's a lack in good will there on his part.

Even projects that turned out HORRIBLY misleading, like The Terah Project from Rossi Publishing came forward and admitted when they goofed. Like say... spending the pledged funds on another book they published here on Paizo; only to have that backfire, because they didn't understand publishing risks.

All it would have taken to avoid all feelings of betrayal and bitterness over Quantum, was to have stayed in regular contact about any developments on the project. Other RPG projects reach went beyond their grasp... and soon outgrew what they could handle alone. Many of those companies got help from their backers or industry hopefuls. I was hoping a growth problem was the only issue and he'd seek help on finishing... but that's apparently not an avenue he wants to go.

Qadira RPG Superstar 2010 Top 16

WELL, it seems that Josh had admitted, through his LinkedIn profile, that he's no longer interested in getting any of us the product he'd promised us when we backed Quantum.

It's a coward's way to end a project. It's time to do what we can, legally, to get our investment back.

My gaming group is very glad we didn't decide to pool our money and patronize Quantum.

Very disappointed in this project. Josh's lack of communication for what ever reason is inexcusable. Josh's constant inability to follow through with promises has shown he is unable to lead big projects.

I will not support him in future endeavors.
