In April of 2010, I lost my partner, Donna Townsend to a stroke. I didn't know her nearly long enough, but I taught her Pzthfinder. Now she never really posted on the boards here, but she knew a number of you vicariously through my talking about the boards, as well as the RPH Superstar and the work of artists like Hugo and Crystal.

So now I have finally* finished Donna's Dozens magic items dedicated to her. I wanted to have it done in April, but writer's block hit me hard.

Like anything I do, I'm more than up for comments and revisions.

Get Donna's Dozens here.

Edit, and don't forget the Damascarran, here

*

Spoiler:
And for people who wonder whiy I don't submit anything anymore, it's because when I can't write, I really can't write and don't want to disappoint anyone.

and i'm sorry for your loss. :-(

I'm sorry for your loss, and I think its awesome that you're putting something out there to remember your friend by.

As to comments on the items:

I don't like the adamantine powder, but that's a personal thing. Should have a duration.

The enhancement bonus on Angel's hair ribbon is worthless and the "half the 1d6 fire damage (or ice or whatever) is holy" is more trouble than its worth. I'd rather it just made the weapon good aligned and cut the cost.

I don't feel one way or the other about the belt ring thing.

I like the diadem but would have liked to have seen an actual price for the psionic version (which would be significantly more expensive since the psionic version does all 6 stats).

Dust of weakness seems alright.

Familiar Collar makes no sense. The spell like abilities it gives aren't the spells necessary to make it, and it tosses in a random +5 to stealth. I like the idea behind it though, very creative.

I like the helpful hound, a lot.

Magus blade / dagger. No. Just no. Do not take class abilities, especially abilities that are the focus of the whole class, and put them in magic items. Very bad design.

Mithral powder - same as adamantine powder.

As an aside, Excalibur wasn't with King Arthur his whole life, he explicitly did upgrade weapons going from the sword he pulled from the stone to Excalibur which was given to him by the lady in the lake. Secondly, Excalibur did not grow with him.

Needles of Untangling - seems to be just designed for a play on words. Not my taste.

I like the idea of the shield enhancer, but I'm not sure about the execution.

I love the treasureless map.

Do you see those () next to your name? Those kind of preclude you from being able to think you don't have good ideas. Other than that, I like these items, and will especially use some of them; like the belt loop, the powders etc.

I also, because of you, will be looking into more items specifically designed for animal companions and familiars, so thank you for that as well.

Other than that, I am truly and deeply sorry that you have lost one you love. My heart goes out to you, as I too have lost and know the sorrow.

I enjoyed reading you magic items. I especially like the Helpful Hound, one of my players has a gnome character who will love it.

I have a question about the treasureless map regarding:

"When the second command word is used, at the end of the spell’s duration anything stored in the extra-dimensional space appears on the surface where the pit was created."

Do the stored items appear on the surface where the original pit was created or is a new pit created with the second command word, enabling the transportation of the treasure rather than just the concealment of the treasure?

I too am sorry for your loss and thank you for your gift in her name.

Thank you everyone for your comments. I wanted to have the Word doc on hand to address them.

@Shadowcat. In a bit of irony, the concept behind the adamantineand mithral powders predate the revised heirloom weapon trait, but they address the same issue. For a campaign where the character/player wants to keep their starting weapon/armor “Yup, been through this here adventure path with ol pokey here” there’s no mechanical way to upgrade the weapon/armor material. The grandfather’s axe paradox aside, I thought it was a hole that needed filled.
The angel hair ribbon is something similar. While more expensive than a +1 weapon, it’s designed as an item that will have functions beyond its initial discovery. For a 3-5 level party, it allows the characters to have a +1 weapon to taste, and the damage reduction will be at higher levels. When the party ‘trades in’ their weapons for more powerful enchantments it can augment a more powerful weapon (by making the energy resistant target take a bit more damage) or just tie it around a back up weapon.
On the diadem, I don’t think the psionic version would be more expensive. While animal affinity augments all six, it only augments one at a time, unless you pay a lot more points.
Thanks for catching I missed fixing the requirements on the collar. (See, “Hermit needs editor, badly”). I’ll fix that and reload. The stealth bonus isn’t tacked on so much as a ‘beneficial side effect.’ Fluffwise the item is always absorbing sound and light to power its effects, so as a result the familiar is quieter and harder to see. My thought was that I wanted a (relatively) cheap item a mage or witch could plop on the familiar to give it a ‘oh crap, help!’ option to defend itself should the owner be busy. Like the powders, I felt it’s a hole people miss.
Sorry to read you’re not keen on the magus dagger. I take it you’re not a fan of the ring of evasion either? To me it seems like a logical evolution, like the spells in Ultimate Combat that mess with firearms. Especially with the more combat oriented archetypes, it would make sense to me that a non-magus would go ‘that’s a neat trick, I wonder if I could make a weapon that does that?’ In some ways it’s like making a rod of quicken spell out of a +1 mace.
Some versions I’ve read of Arthurian legends do say/imply that the sword in the stone was broken and reforged into Excalibur. Or think of Narsil. *shrug*

@jesterle The pit with the treasure ‘in it’ can be recreated anywhere. It’s a flavourful variant of treasure stitching. I was thinking of how it would be funny for a map to be carrying the treasure, and trying to follow the map to the X gets you more lost.

I’m glad people liked the hound. I was afraid of it being too silly.

Thank you again for your comments.

Okay, totally off topic Matthew, but were you born on the 9th of the month (thus the hermit)?

Nope. I was trapped in my house for two months with a nervous break down. Even after I got better I don't handle crowds well. That said, the dual nature of the Hermit fits me well too. :-)

To me the ring of evasion isn't the same simply because if you're asked to name what class feature it is that most defines a rogue, my first thought is backstab. I think that's simply because evasion is a passive ability and several classes get it, while spell combat is an active ability and pretty much the whole focus for the magus class. If it worked with spell combat somehow (ala furious weapon, or the weapon training gloves, or what have you) that would be nice.

I like the Belt Ring of Repair and the Shield Enhancer Ring!

The Adamantine/Mithral powders are a nifty concept too.

Scarab Sages

I haven't had a chance to look over them in detail, but one thing stood out to me. The Familiar Collar grants two spell abilities. Shouldn't those spells be required to make it?

See, “Hermit needs editor, badly.” It's on my list of Revisions. (I went through 4 drafts with the Damascarran)

Ah, I see. Now to me the 'signature' of the Magus is the spellpool itself. Different strokes for different folks.
