Beefing up the Grey Maidens

Curse of the Crimson Throne

James Jacobs has said that, if he could go back and do it again, he'd do more with the Grey Maidens. So, just a couple of thoughts...

-- Characters who make a sufficiently high Knowledge (History) or (Arcana) check may know that Kazavon had some gruesome techniques for turning free-willed soldiers into utterly obedient construct-like creatures. I think these guys were called the Faceless Ones, because the final ritual involved grafting a metal or ceramic mask permanently onto the victim's face. (If you're a Grant Morrison fan, think of Doctor Pyg and his Dollotrons.) The Grey Maidens are the Queen's attempt to copy this.

-- IMC there are several sorts of Grey Maidens. The "G-Series" are the standard 3rd level fighters from _Seven Days to the Grave_. If forced to speak, all their names begin with G. The "M-Series" are mounted fighters, Ftr 2/Cav 2. There's an "Advanced M" as well, who I think are Ftr 4/Cav 4. Finally, the "K-Series" are the 10th level fighters who appear in the final module.

For flavor, each Maiden has a small badge with a letter and number -- M-23, or whatever. If forced to speak, a Maiden will give only this identifier. "I am G-40! I am G-40!"

-- In addition, the Queen's sanctum contains a few rejects from the process. Sometimes called the D (for 'Damaged' or 'Dross') series, this unfortunate young women have suffered some combination of physical scarring, forced deformity, or serious mental damage. The Queen keeps some of them around as menials, because it amuses her to do so. No real game effect, but it's one more bit of chrome to drive home that she's really, really quite evil.
