More constructs.

I had to stat up my own Clockwork Snipers in my game. Nasty, but fun construct level things to kill.

I'd also love to see the Robot rules from Dungeons see a port and fleshing out.

Golems and clockwork monsters aren't robots. Sci-fi robots appeared once in one module and they don't fit in a sword & sorcery fantasy world. At least not to me.

I don't like science fiction in fantasy roleplaying. Psionics was the closest I ever got to that and even then I can see it as just another type of magic. Lasers, robots, power armour and laser swords don't work inside a world of magic and monsters.

I'm not trying to say you are wrong for yourself, but just putting my view on it over. It's not something I want to see any further in Pathfinder.

Where did you find all these creatures? Or are most gods? As I looked up a few I:

A: Couldn't find any information on many.
B: Many had so many different versions and variations I lost interest.
C: Many are actually Gods and not monsters at all.

Could you give descriptions on some? Because Google obviously doesn't work on most.

I left all the creatures I don't know about in the list and removed the ones I do know about.

Best creature in your list is the Rarog, I agree with it 100%.

Did I say, golems and clockwork? No, and that's not at all what I'm referring to. What I am referring to is the explicit mention to "Cyborgs, Robots and Androids" in Volume 3 The Underworld and Wilderness Adventures of the original D&D boxed set.

Furthermore, robots appeared in the module DA3 City of the Gods, which is based on a dungeon appearing in the Blackmoor campaign run by Dave Arneson. Gary Gygax's own character, Mordenkainen explored this site alongside Rob Kuntz's Robilar. Speaking of Gary Gygax, he had characters from his D&D game visit the starship Warden from the game Metamorphosis Alpha. Metamorphosis Alpha later inspired the adventure S3: Expedition to the Barrier Peaks, which featured part of a crashed alien space ship. I will also bring up Temple of the Frog, which while it has no robots, does include an alien who wields several technological items. This adventure first appeared in D&D Supplement II.

While I could bring up more examples, these should be enough to prove my point. That being that the inclusion of Sci-fi elements in D&D has a long history. For that matter, this was also true in many of the Swords and Sorcery stories that D&D was based on! Fantasy is far larger than Tolkien, which arguably was only a superficial influence on D&D at first. Not saying you're wrong for not liking them, but they have been part of D&D for a while, and apparently part of D&D that the Paizo developers like. So I wouldn't expect them to go away anytime soon. Besides I thought we had already established that nay-saying others ideas for monsters was a no-no.

Numeria is very much a part of Paizo's default setting. You're free not to use it, but expecting them not to support it is a patently ridiculous notion.

I don't mind sci-fi with the serial number filed off kinda stuff in D&D. It's been around for ages. Specifically if they are going to do a Numeria AP eventually. I'd love more Cthulu like horrors, weird contructs (crystal!), and more weird and fancy creatures and alien beings. I'd LOVE to see something like the greys in Pathfinder terms. That would be hilarious.

I specifically want Thundar the Barbarian critters. I want wizards with 2 faces that shoot lasers out of their eyes. I want mutant horses. I want Moks! I want to play Bloody Ukla!

And the terminator-fan-club is back again! (joke, don't take it too personal or like an attack, which people probably do)

If you like robots so much, why don't you make a new topic for a robot/terminator/lazer bestiary, one which does not involve the current bestairy.

And I say this because I love bestairies so much I don't want to see them get spoiled by lazers, like so many other things I love, always lazers get in there somehow an ruin the magic.

So that's why i'm so against it (and afraid of it) of course you are free to wish for it, but i'm free to plea against it as wel, for a monster book filled with lazer stuff is no monster book, its something else which I despise.

And its SOOOOO easy to create a WHOLE bestairy for cryptids, monsters and other clockworks and make a seperate book for robots and lazer stuff, in that way you keep BOTH camps happy, so my wish is that robot-lovers would create their own topic and ask for a robot-only bestairy, called a robotairy or terminairy.

Seriously, we've had 3 Bestiaries full of non-sci fi stuff. What is your deal? I highly doubt they'll make that stuff the focus of the book. It looks more and more like you have a personal grudge against a playstyle. Meh.

Yes 3 bestairies full, but still so much cool monsters, cryptids, mythos and legends to be paizonized, not only to begin about the creatures from Adventure paths that still needs to be bestiarized, so no room for robots in my head.

And like I said many people (not only me) dislike robots in their books, so making a seperate robot-manual would be a much much better plan.

Or you could learn to accept the fact that you are not the lord and master of this thread, and you don't have veto power of what Paizo decides to put into their bestiaries.

Numeria and the Distant Worlds (and the Outer Tapestry) exist. And robots exist in those places. It's canon to Paizo's setting. So they're gonna support it, and one of the ways they will do so is by putting robots in the bestiaries. Learn to deal with it, 'cos it ain't changing.

I hope Bestiary 4 is the steampunk / robot / laser bestiary, just to spite you. :D

On another note, I hope we get more mega monsters like the biblical critters from BE3. I love big interesting monsters.

I'm fairly certain that not all of the mentioned Behemoths from Bestiary 3, so there is definitely room for more of those critters.

Not to mention, we are still owed Kaiju!

As for robots, a hardcover bestiary has...what, several hundred monsters? 5 or even 10 robots isn't going to take up much room. Look at how much room clockworks took up in Bestiary 3. We all have things we either don't like or would prefer to see elsewhere. Stating an opinion is fine, but please try not to crap over other people.

Also....PLEASE...It's lasers, not Lazers

- A laser sword and a sword enchanted to deal fire damage made of adamantine ("cuts through anything", basically)

- A robot and a golem made of metal

- Power armor and armor enchanted to grant energy resistance or protection from strong attacks (critical hits)

- A laser and the spell Scorching Ray

OT: More boss monsters maybe? Like generic boss type creatures that would fit in any campaign where the base creature has appeared.

Lasers aren't much different than spell rays and missiles, but gatling guns can't be camouflaged.

Geez thank you guys, if I wasn't a negative emotion incubus I would have probably have killed myself.

Lazers = Dutch, so that's probably why I mess up, not everyone can be a star in the english language.

And thats the last I say about robots, I still can't understand that fantasy fans want to turn it into a sciencefiction mess, but that's just me and that stays just me probably.

@Numerian; Thank you, that is a much better list! In that way I know where you're talking about! But Hypnos is a God, I don't know where you found a non-god version of that?

Anyway, anybody knows about some more mythic/cryptid/folkloric wind based creatures? I think the book needs some more. Fire creatures always rule the books and so are water based creatures, but earth and wind creatures are often hard to find, so put them down please!

As for water creatures: Ashray's that are entirely made from water are pretty awesome, of course they should be evil.

EDIT: The monsters from Moonstone: A hard days knight are pretty awesome! They always freaked me out when I was small. Especially the big troll like things with the huge maws!

Sincubus wrote:

There was one in Ravenloft, check here.

And in Mystara, link

Anemoi and tempests are wind-based.

Fei Lian (or Feng Bo, “Wind Lord”)— A celestial monster in Chinese mythology, with the body and legs of a stag, the spots of a leopard, and the tail of a serpent. Its sparrow-like head has bull horns. It controls the fierce storm winds, releasing them from a bag at whim.

Flying Heads (or Big Heads)—Weird aerial disembodied heads in the folklore of the Iroquois Indians of the eastern United States. They have flashing fiery eyes, huge, wing-likeears, and great, gaping, snarling mouths. Gnarly claws protrude from under their long scraggly hair, which holds them aloft as they are carried by the storm winds, hunting unwary humans.

Hraesvelg (“Corpse-Eater” or Windmaker)—A vast, eagle-like bird of Norse mythology that nests upon the icy peaks of the frozen north. Her eaglets are the frigid winds blasted forth by the flapping of her mighty wings.

Shadhahvar (or Shadavar)—A predatory Persian antelope with a single hollow, branching horn. The wind blows the horn like a flute, and animals are drawn toward the pleasant music. Then, the Shadhahvar kills them.

Thanks Numerian, keep putting on creatures, you seem to know many less-known species and I really like that for my own RPG collection as wel as for this thread and bestairy 4!!!

I really enjoy the Shadhahvar!! Hraesvelg is a creature i've come across pretty much lately in many games, card games and other stuff, don't like the name tho, its too difficult to pronounce and to right down. Corpse Eater is too bland, and so is Windmaker... it needs another name.

I'd love to see more things like the Rose Wife, shape changers, etc of a more neutral and possible friendly nature. An expanded section on fey creatures and maybe fey nobles would be rather nice.

I'm not nay-saying anyones ideas for monsters. I merely stated something I'd rather not see in a regular bestiary. The forthcoming Inner Sea Bestiary, which is setting specific, I could see including technological monsters from Numeria.

Please don't think I am attacking you for point of view. I'm not. It's just a personal point of view of mine.

One is science fiction and the other fantasy. From a personal point of view, and not trying to change anyone else's opinion, science fiction does not fit into a fantasy environment.

I don't want to have an argument over this. Everyone has their own opinion. Let's get back on topic.

Can everybody name all the cryptid, mythic and supernatural spiders he knows about?

Jorogumo, Arachne, Anansi, Tsuchigumo... More???

Arachne, Anansi and Tsuchigumo are yet to make an appearance in the books, but I wanna know more spider monsters, please post your lists.

I said PRACTICAL difference.

My point is, even if they release a Pathfinder book with NOTHING but uber-futuristic material, it doesn't matter because it's a trivial matter to reskin it as something medieval, and vice versa.

Sincubus,

Can't think of too many Giant spiders in mythology/older literature, at least ones having a specific name. One new one for you list is Djien, a monstrous man-sized spider from Seneca traditions, who stored his heart deep underground and was only slain when a brave warrior stabbed through the earth while fighting the beast, destroying the heart.

One of my mythological monster books has a badass drawing of one depicting it in vaguely humanoid form.

Checking the internet right now, apparently the local name for the cryptid giant spider from the Congo is Jba Fofi.

It's less about your opinions, and more to do with how you are expressing them. Maybe it's not on purpose, but you come across as trying to steer the thread in the directions you want it to go...and more annoyingly, steering it away from areas you don't like. Your opinions are no more valid than those of the people who DO like steampunk or higher-tech creatures in the bestiaries.

Not sure if someone mentioned this (the thread is quite long indeed), but I certainly wish to see the monsters of the adventure paths all consolidated and added into the next bestiary.

Sincubus wrote:

... Uttu, Djieien, Kumo, Atlach-Nacha, Da Tengat, Spider Woman, Chelicerae?, Cacus (one version of him), Areop-enap, Iktomi and other spider tricksters from Native American folklore.

Great suggestions in this thread, I wanted to make another list but most are already here. Short list this time

Spoiler:

Aatxer—A terrifying red bull in the Basque folklore, also appears in The Last Unicorn novel.

Abaia—A gigantic eel of Melanesian mythology, causes terrible rainstorms and floods to destroy them. Mentioned in The Book of the New Sun. Already posted.

Aitvaras.

Al - This hairy, half-human, half-beast creature of Persian folklore has fiery red eyes, tusks similar to those of a boar, iron teeth, brass claws, and copious, shaggy, snake-like hair. It becomes invisible when it dons a pointy hat covered with small bells. The Al actively hunts women—especially when they are incapacitated in childbirth, as newborn infants and women's liver are its favorite delicacy.

Campe.

Haetae—A leonine creature of stone. It feeds on fire and therefore guards against it and all other forms of disruptive or violent change. It can challenge time itself, bite the sun or moon, and create an eclipse.

Ichneumon (or Egyptian Rat)— natural enemy of the asp, the Basilisk, and the Cocodryllus. It is said to cover itself with protective mud, then slip down the Cocodryllus’s throat and devour its insides. Already posted.

Ilomba— A supernatural vampiric watersnake in African folklore of Zambia and Zaire, its head bears the visage of the sorcerer who created it. Its victims can be revived as zombie slaves to its master, but if it is killed, or if it dies from lack of prey, its creator also dies.

Iya.

Kamaitachi (“Sickle Weasel”)—Vicious, weasel-like creatures of Japanese folklore, they move too quickly to be seen. They always hunt in packs of three: the first one knocks the prey down, the second slashes its throat, and the third heals the wound so they can repeat the process until the victim is dead. Already posted.

Leyak.

Ugjuknarpak—A monstrous predatory mouse in the legends of the Inuits. It hides under an overturned kayak, from which it snatches human victims with its extremely long, prehensile tail. It has superior hearing and great speed, and its hide is impervious to all weapons. No one dares approach its island lair.

Wakandagi —A serpentine Water-Monster in the legends of the Mohawk. Said to inhabit the Missouri River, it hurls exploding spheres of water at intruders upon its territory. Usually seen only through a mist, its head bears antlers like a stag’s, and its hoofed front legs are also deer-like. Already posted.

Yeck—A small, shapeshifting spirit in the folklore of India. A Yeck usually appears as small furry creature wearing a white cap. It is strong enough to lift mountains and it enjoys leading humans astray. But anyone who can steal its cap gains the power of invisibility.

I'd also love to see more 'western' monsters. Like the Pale Rider, thunderbird, animal spirts, tumbleweed monster, etc to flesh out places like he Mana Wastes and more desert environments.

Isn't the Djieien a Solifugid? Well thanks anyway! I forgot about that one and its now my upgrade for the Sun Spider or Solifigud, and also my wish for bestairy 4! (as magical camel spider)

And thanks for the other suggestions and for the cool list underneath it Numerian! You and MMC are my favorite living bestiaries! :p

The Seneca were a tribe of Iroquois Native Americans, and lived in a region of the country that didn't have Solifugids (These are confined to the western states in North America...Nasty critters I have come across while looking for herps in California). I think if statted up they shouldn't be a "big Solifugid", but rather some sort of weird arachnoid aberration (which can certainly have some solifugid traits).

I think a couple of those critters mentioned were invented by WOTC, like the Arak (but not the different types of Arak) and Chelicerae.

Looks like the Inner Sea Bestiary delivered on some of the wish list:

3 new robots + Android as playable race
3 new psychopomps and 1 new Kyton
A Mantis monster (Deadly Mantis)
(Spellscar) Fext
"non-humanoid" Undead (The incredibly gross looking Charnel Colossus)

Plus a bunch of other stuff

Most importantly the Scarab and Deadly Mantis!! I was hoping those creatures would make it into the normal bestiary, but what the heck! They are there anyway and i'm happy for that!! (but please tell me the scarab isn't mechanical!)

+ I understand a Tallman monster? Well that is of course good news for the 10.0000000 fans of that monster...
Look on youtube, on every collection-of-cryptids-and-favorite-monster lists there are people (especially american) complaining there isn't a tallman on the list or in an episode...

The monster is probably good to scare children, but its too afraid to attack grownup people, so its pretty much useless in child-less adventures. A really good kidnapper of children AND Grown-ups? Erlkonig!

While I do not share the mass adulation of the Slender Man, it's credited with the slaughter of plenty of adults in the various crowdsourced tales about the stupid thing.

The Tall Man, on the other hand, is nifty equal-opportunity threat baddie played by Angus Scrimm in the Phantasm films, and one I could easily see Paizo producing a version of...

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Inner Sea Bestiary seems great, a lot of mythological creatures that I've wanted, memitim, viduus, shoki, fext, vetala. Termagant, does it look like a dragon (like in Jack Vance's story) or something else?

So let me get this straight... you actually have a tallman, slenderman and greyman? And they all have the same appearance but different countries? Or what?

Don't like them, they are probably too modern for me.

Actually I wouldn't mind a bestiary with a lot more low (1/4-5) CR creatures.

The Tallman has nothing to do with Slenderman. It's a movie character from the Phantasm series, which I sadly still haven't seen.

Not sure who the Grey Man is, unless you are talking about the Fear Liath of Britain, which is more of a Gray, fear inducing bigfoot-like creature.

The Thin Men in the Inner Sea Bestiary is a bit more monstrous, and is a fey that decides to sometime eat people. There isn't any particular connection to children however...it is described as eating farmers

The Termagant is...weird. It's basically look likes a person whose lower body is a sack of bleeding tissue, emerging from an iron maiden (which I think might be part of it's body). Man...#$%#ing Kytons.

The Scarab is a Large-sized Beetle. I too am confused on why it was in the Inner Sea Bestiary, since it seems more appropriate for the hardcover.

The Thin Man is a CR4 medium size Fey with immunity to poison, reach with it's claws(1d4+4+bleed), compression ability, Vanish(1/day move action, +20stealth and hide in plain sight for 1round per HD).

Termagant is listed as a CR17 outsider(law) but I can't find any stats for him in the book.

The Tall Man (Phantasm) would make an interesting monster, especially if you gave him two classes of minions: the alien dwarves made from the bodies of the recently deceases, and of course the silver spheres (with various deadly impliments that they can deploy such as saws, spikes, and lazors).

look for Kyton, Termagant

Yeah I found it now, I can see why I couldn't find it, i was too busy averting my eyes from that pic of it.

0HD Fey.

I'm still looking for more mythological/Folklore/fantasy version of the following animals, can anybody help me?
BTW i'm asking it here so that paizo will see the names and can use them in bestiary 4 of course.

Moth or Butterfly (evil) monsters. (mothman is out already of course)

Mantis monsters from folklore/mythology/fantasy, so far I only have Empusa, and I know its not a mantis monster but in the modern time there is a mantis species known as EMpusa, so I find it fitting, we have enough succubus-lookalikes so the empusa can be a monstrous centaur-mantis, or a she-mantis.

Raven/Crow creatures from mythology and folklore or maybe cryptids? Anyway I already have the odins ravens and the Nachtkrapp, which would be sweet for Bestiary 4 btw.

Toadstool & Fungus creatures from folklore or mythology or maybe gods?

^ Could be the root for something. But the thing is, most of the creatures you seem to have an interest in appear in plenty of folktales- as themselves.

Moth, Crow, Raven, Mantis and so forth don't have "monster" names in a lot of cultures because they didn't need them. Raven swallowed the sun. Raven brought forth humanity. Great clouds of crows and/or ravens serve any number of villains. Mantis as a Mantis was a divinity of the Khoi. None of them got called anything else. A cosmology that includes both Raven and the Thunder Bird would have little need to give either a fancy name- it's just that one happens to be a mundane animal in our eyes, while the other isn't.
