I would love to get involved in an online Pathfinder game. Ideally it would be one of the APs and over Maptools. Ive available weekends and Tuesday evenings.

*fingers crossed*

I'm interested in the same. I have been playing with a group over MapTools, but it's been progressively harder getting everyone together. I don't think I could make a daily commitment to a PbP, but putting aside a couple hours once a week on a weeknight wouldn't be hard and frankly, I would enjoy it more than a PbP.

I'm down. My attendance on weekends would be spotty, but I can do any time Tuesday after 5:30PM MST.

It might also be worth posting in the MapTools forums to round out the group:

Would we be playing one of the APs and if so which one?

I'm looking for a play by post. I'll play just about any role in a party, but I favor melee classes.

Hey guys. I'm not really up to date on online RPing aside from play-by-post, but what exactly is maptools? Aside from that, I'd be interested too.

That's a good question. MapTools is virtual tabletop application. Essentially, it's a generic tool that handles such things as visualizing the map, movement, dice rolls, light and vision such that everyone can see what's happening in realtime over the internet. In my opinion, when combined with Skype, it's the closest thing to the PnP game you can get without being in the same room. However, the tool is good enough that my other group uses it even when we can get together.

The main differences with PbP is that it's visual and happens in realtime rather than having to wait long periods between turns.

Here's a link to MapTool
And here's some screen shots of a MapTools session.

I don't know how much you've been able to figure out. PbP or Play-by-Post (there are too many acronyms for me) is an online text based role-playing system. Essentially, everyone posts their actions, conducts their rolls and types what their character does and says into an ongoing forum thread. It's kind of like writing a story as a group using game mechanics. It seems to be what 90% of the games people on this site are talking about. Check here for an example:

http://paizo.com/campaigns/DMZyrensHeartOfRunes/gameplay

What we're proposing is a little different. Rather than using a forum, we'd use MapTools, which is a virtual table top. It's more similar to the Pen and Paper (PnP) game in that it's conducted like a regular session. It's done in realtime and we communicate live via Skype. The program handles die rolls and keeps track of stats, to keep it fair. The difference is that rather than having a table (as in PnP) we're all remotely looking at the live map on a computer screen.

Personally, I prefer MapTools to PbP because I think it better replicates the PnP experience.

To answer your question, you wouldn't use MapTools for PbP. All the mechanics are handled in the forum through formating your text.

Hope that helps.

The idea of using Skype and Maptools is really intriguing. I'm in! :P

Awesome!

Maybe it would be a good idea to get this thing rolling? Itzeebitzee, are you still down to GM?

It might be helpful if we give a little more info about who we are and what we're looking for, such as:
-What timezone are you in? What days and times work?
-What AP interests you most?
-What character are you thinking about playing?
-What's your email address?

-MST--Tues, Wed. Thurs work best for me after 5:30PM my time, but I can be a little flexible.
-I haven't played any of the APs. Kingmaker sounds interesting, but I'm cool with any of them.
-I'd like to play one of the PFRPG specific classes because I've never done that. Inquisitor interests me most, but a Summoner sounds very different from anything I've played before. Again, I'm flexible.
-jeffeharper@gmail.com

Once we're more organized, someone should setup a Yahoo group, Google Site or Facebook group to keep everything in one place.

-EST, anytime during the week after 6:00PM.
-I'm open to any Adventure Paths, but I've had my best experiences with GM-made adventures and would prefer such. I'd even GM if we needed one.
-If playing, I'd like to make a Gnome Gunslinger.
-adventfall@gmail.com
-Skype: Khriox_

Also, my other preferences in gaming(for those who are interested) are that the campaigns that I play in are more centered around roleplaying, interesting characters that aren't defined by their gear and class and effort from the players/GM to make their world immersive. Pretty much what I want in players whenever I GM! Hahah. So yeah.

-CST, Tue or Wed at 6:00PM or later*.
-I'm open to any Campaign or Adventure Paths, but have played RotRL
-I'd prefer not to GM as I am 1 of 2 GMs in my tabletop gaming circle, and I typically run because the other GM dosen't have a steady schedule and our other players refuse to even try
-I'd like to play a human Magus**.
-cydthemagi@gmail.com

**but willing to play Anything that gives us a diverse and balanced party

Silver Crusade

If there's still room, I'd like to indicate my own interest for something over RPTools/MapTools/similar. I'm in the CST time zone and my schedule is somewhat flexible though I prefer evenings and later if possible. I actually have a few character sheets ready to go (or else will be ready within 24 hours once I start tweaking them for play in the group).

I have a Celestial Bloodline Sorc ready and would strongly prefer to use it (the character is versatile enough to fill multiple roles, leaning toward an emphasis in blasting, control, minor troubleshooting, and some summoning), though can do other configurations if necessary.

Also, a friend of mine (who doesn't have an account here yet, hopefully they'll chime in when they can however?) has indicated they're interested and they'd likely be doing a melee-oriented Fighter or similar. They told me that, quote, "My weekends are iffy, since when I work I often work Fri/sat, sometimes Sunday." This friend is in PST. My own schedule differs from theirs a bit though is usually compatible, so the group does not necessarily have to take "both or neither of us", it could be just one.

Oh dear... did I lose track of that thread? ...Clearly I did. I'm very sorry; I've been messed up by a mix of work and sickness lately, and this should not have happened. Yes, I am interested, thank you for reminding me! I'll get in touch immediately. A quick question... do we have room for one more, or are we full? The player in question would be coming from D&D 4E experience but I can quickly get them up to speed on Pathfinder.

Edit: Upon doing so, it looks like that thread has moved to PBP formats? Is this correct? If so, I may need to withdraw from it; my work is such that PBP isn't a particularly ideal format. I'm sorry if I held anything up while I was gone, but wish you the best of luck and it looks like you've got a good group!

Everyone can add me on Skype and I'll create a conference chat so we can discuss what we'd like to do for a Campaign. If no one steps up, I'd be happy to.

I like your GMing style. I think it suits me as a player. If you've got some ideas about a game you want to GM, I say, go for it.

My only thoughts about what I would like to see in a campaign is an ongoing plot with interesting villains that reoccur--which sounds like what you are describing. Other than that, I am pretty open.

No worries. I just wanted to check.

If this is still going on I would love to be a part of the game! Im experiences with PF and have run/played games over Maptools. So... if there is a chance to get involved in this then pick me, pick me, pick me!!!!!!

I'm new to this site but not new to PnP, I am super interested as long as we aren't doing PbP. I have several characters ready to go, and my schedule is open at the moment.

Here is the character I would prefer to use but I can play anything

I'm confused at this point... did this splinter off into multiple groups, multiple people stepping up to DM? I was in contact with one group through this thread, but it seems like there may be two here now?

As far as I know There is one group consisting of me, Cyd, Lass, Arkley, and one more person who posted here, but they weren't online when I joined so I don't know who it is. We are still looking for a GM but Lass will run a Kingmaker campaign if we can't find someone else who would like to GM.

Yup What Zeignod said.

Silver Crusade

Kingmaker, you say? I've never played it before, but I'm reading through the Player's Guide now and this looks very neat. I would gladly play in it, and am already formulating a character (and history for them) that would fit in well. I'll keep in touch on this thread, or wherever else we might move the discussion to.

I'd also be pretty interested in an online campaign. I've been reading up on pathfinder recently.

What times was it that you, Ziegnod/Lass/et all, were thinking of playing? I can probably work my schedule around to fit a campaign in, so long as I have warning, though from time to time I can't make Fridays or weekends.

I have a few ideas for a Ranger I'd like to play, and I'll go ahead and check out the Kingmaker setting in case that's what people end up going with and there's room for me.

Silver Crusade

My schedule remains mostly unchanged; I lean toward the evening hours of CST, but can adjust to meet the group's needs if given advance notice. Earlier, later, it's all good to me so long as I'm given a few days to reorganize my schedule.

As far as classes go, upon reading Kingmaker my interests remain the same. I have a Celestial Bloodline Sorc pretty much ready to go, and would just need to talk to a DM about some of the finer details of the character's history and fit into the campaign.

Edit: However, I could play other classes if necessary. This Sorc is just my preference, as it's a pretty flexible character with a good history and would be a good contributor to the party overall plus should be decent at the Kingmaker-specific stuff the Players Guide has mentioned.

I've sent contact requests to you and Lass. I think I'm already in contact with Arkley.

So far I think people have confirmed a monk and cleric so if your thinking of taking a Sorc thats fine.

The game time would be Tuesday evenings around 7 EST and run 3 hours or so.

For building characters use a 20 point character buy and lvl 1

Ziegnod dropped out of the group, so we no longer have a monk.

Silver Crusade

Lass: Excellent! Thank you for stepping up to DM. I will definitely have a Google Doc ready with my sheet by tonight. Any particular way to deliver it to you, any Google account/email address/etc. to send it to? Or do you prefer some other format? I'm flexible on this, no problem.

In the meantime, I wanted to confirm a few details and ask some quick questions if it's okay.

On scheduling... Tuesday at 7 EST works really well for me. Are we planning to play tomorrow, October 4, or aiming to start next week instead? Either way is fine on this end; I really like the time you've proposed!

I'm definitely planning to go with a Celestial Bloodline Sorc, and they should have stats compatible with fielding any of the Charisma-related Kingmaker offices; I would even be willing to have this character fill the Ruler slot if the others are comfortable with it (NG align, notable Sarenrae influences) since it would fit the character's goal very well. I can contact you to sort out character history and such soon if you'd like?

There's already a cleric? Neat! What deity (or domain-philosophy), if it's okay to ask? Edit: I'm told the player of said might be doing a Gunslinger instead? Interesting.

Also, it's my understanding some DMs like to be notified up front if any character will be making notable use of Summons. I plan to do this from character level 3 onward, with the Summon Monster spell line. I already have Bloodline-adjusted stat blocks ready, I plan ahead of time on what to summon, and can play them promptly so there won't be any delays or headaches. However, I have a question regarding Pathfinder Adventures #20 (pg. 62) adds one new option apiece for Summon Monster 6, 7, and 8 when 'cast by a priest of Sarenrae.' Would this list be permissible for the character, or is 'priest' interpreted strictly as the Cleric/Oracle classes? The specific monsters are Janni (Summon VI), Djinni (Summon VII), and 'Redeemed' Efreeti (No Wish, same as normal Efreeti but Align LG, Summon VIII). This isn't an urgent question, since it'll be some time before even Summon Monster VI comes up.

Finally, a quick sheet/character creation question. Are you using any other rules, such as Traits, APG Alternate Favored Class Options, etc.? Or is this straight-up "20 point buy, level 1, and that's all"? Is this Core only, or are there any other noteworthy resources allowed? My prototype (mostly complete) sheet is Core-only, so this won't be a big problem. It mostly influences what skills my character takes, such as whether Diplomacy winds up as a class skill or not.

Thanks for any heads-up you can provide! I should be ready to play very soon, since at this point it's just a matter of minor tweaks to the sheet depending on sources/rules.

We wont be playing tonight (Oct 4th) but I'll pop on Skype around 7 to talk to people about character stuff and try to get us set up on Maptools.

As for character creation, traits are fine and Im cool with feats and spells from APs and other sources with the caveat that if I find it broketastic and ask you to change it, you accept that it will improve game play for all. I like for people to play what they wish but Im not fond on power-gaming min/maxers. So if your build includes some gimick with summoning hordes as some of the UC archetypes lay out then thats good. Just be prepared to keep track of all their hit points and abilities yourself. I'll have enough on my plate.

As for role within Kingmaker, I'll leave those to the players to sort out. But I'll let you know that it wont really be an issue till much further down the line - at least 5 sessions into play I would imagine.

We can also talk about how involved you guys wish to be in Kingdom building. You can be heavily involved, finding resource centers and working out trade agreements or we can play Kingdom in the background in which we focus on exploration and adventure and just assume those other things are happening.

As for Role-Playing, Kingmaker does give some chances for RP, perhaps not as much as in other APs. As such Im going to go off of what you guys do. If you work up a great deal of RP I can go with it, if you guys want to explore and kick ass, then thats ok as well. BUT RP does not, as written, decide the Kingmaker AP. As such I'll give RP options, you can take the bait or not as you feel comfortable with.

Once we get started I'll set up some forums for the campaign so we can do shopping, RP, loot divisions and backgrounds on message boards in-between games.

Lass wrote:

That is a huge relief. I'm building a new computer as I write this (live-OS DVDs are awesome this way) since my current one is starting to show hardware failure a tad earlier than I expected. I will still try to attend the Skype session, but please understand if I miss it; I've been pulling an all-night project building this replacement.

Quote:

Sweet. I'll go with the PFS guidelines for these and try to finish up the sheet within the next 36 hours. I think that's 'two traits maximum' for PFS, but will double-check.

Quote:

No problem at all. You mentioned some of the UM/UC tricks for enabling larger groups of Summons, and I'll admit I had my eye on that. If they prove to be a problem though, I have a rough rebuild already done in my head that keeps Core-only Summoning going while removing the Ultimate book content stuff for it; I can put the feats to other uses and carry on play easily enough. It'd take about 24-36 hours to redo the sheet, tops, if it even comes up.

Quote:
I like for people to play what they wish but Im not fond on power-gaming min/maxers.

Also fine. I build effective characters, but I do not obsess about wringing every single point of efficiency out of them.

Quote:

Easily agreed. Not a problem at all, and I'll keep in mind creature intellect/alignments for behavior whenever direct summoner orders would be irrelevant.

Quote:

That's definitely a good thing; gives the party time to get familiar with one another.

Quote:

I spoke to the others earlier over Skype, or most of them at least. The general consensus was most of us seem fairly interested in this. One of my major reasons to look into Traits was in fact to make the Sorc class a little more suited to the sort of things I suspect will come up in kingdom-running such as Diplomacy checks.

Quote:
(Snipped for brevity; you discussed how you'll set up RP vs. AP flow)

This sounds good too.

Quote:

Excellent! I'm looking forward to this, it sounds like you've got a good plan and handle on things.

Silver Crusade

Lass: I'm posting here in response to things you mentioned on Skype, as requested. I emailed you the information you asked for, though the sheet conversion did turn out a bit ugly so let me know if you need it in another format or posted on another site's sheet style. Otherwise, I think I got everything you asked about?

Tonight's talk was very good. You definitely have a strong grasp of DMing, and the rest of the group sounds like they'll be fun and easy to play with. Most of you mentioned being fine with a good mix of action and non-combative story, so it seems we're all pretty well in agreement on this?

Yeah it was really nice to meet you all and I got a good feeling this will be a fun game.

So to remind you of some points:

1. Take some time and design a arch nemesis that I can write into the story at some point. Give me some good motivation points for why the person would plot against you.

2. Give me a reason why your character is trying to get away from his normal life. The Stolen Lands are a place where people seek to start over, redeem themselves or engage in banditry. Why is your character there?

3. Give me some friendly NPC/s that your character has a soft spot for. It could be a lost love such as that halfling or someone new. Just give me some loose ideas.

4. Finally give me some goals/items or other special things you want your character to gain or accomplish.

I'll try to work these things into the game as best I can.

In the meantime I suggest you guys all download maptools from rptools.net and begin setting up some macros for your characters. I'll try to hop online later this afternoon and Saturday afternoon to work out the kinks of the Pathfinder frameworks. If all goes great we should be set to go on Tuesday the 11th. :)
