Bad Wrong Fun?

Gamer Life General Discussion

I've seen any number of (and even participated in some :P) threads on these boards where groups of people argue about what is good and what is bad in terms of RPG gaming. In the end most people would agree that every table is different, and that what is fun at one table, might not be fun at another. For that reason I found these articles: Good Fences Make Good Players and DM Rules and Exciting News to be rather interesting. Especially in that there are bullet lists of things that make players good and or bad, and GMs good/bad. It seems like Mearls is setting a definitive set of guidelines for good fun.

Also, it seems to me like he dropped the lead. Monte Cook is going back to work for Wizards R&D!! I wonder what that means?

Is it your position that neither players nor GMs can improve? Because, in my mind at least, this is what we're after when we cite examples of good or bad play/players/GMs. In your view it would seem that 'fun' is so nebulous as to be immune to advice.

I've read the lists and the articles and they seem quite fine to me. Or, better put, I fail to see how doing the opposite of the things on the lists might possibly lead to MORE fun for everyone at the table.

Gaming is parts art and science, but there are experts of both types and we all stand to learn a thing or two from time to time.

Absolutely not. I just think setting specific guidelines about what makes a good role-player can be a pretty contentious thing to do. I liked the articles, and I totally agree with all his sentiments. I mean really it comes down to don't be a jerk. Of course what the group constitutes as a jerk does change from table to table. Also, I've always tried to live my life by the philosophy that fun is a choice, not an activity.

Also, I think the most important part of the second article (the one published today) was that Monte Cook is again working for Wizards R&D.

I strongly suspect that Monte will be working on 5e.

That's my guess as well, but that really makes me wonder about the direction 5e will take? Will it be a return to 3e type mechanics, or a new completely altered 4e? Or will it be some type of hybrid "take what you want, leave the rest" a la carte iteration? I'm really interested to see where Wizards heads with this with Monte as part of the steerage.

I doubt there will be a 5e. Or at least anything recognizable as a table top RPG. I doubt it will be a CCG. I don't think that is going as well as they hoped between Gamma World (which I thought looked actually fun) and the bonus D&D card thing.

I think Hasbro of the Coast is going to go the table-top RPG route. More focus on being better supportive of a randomly assembled board game dungeon like what they are doing with 4e now.

Yes, 5e is coming out any day now, just like it has been for the last couple of years. By the time it finally comes out, everyone can feel justified and claim they predicted it.

All right maybe it will be 4.5e then. :P

You keep this very comment saved in Notepad just for threads like this, dontcha?

Meh, i will not look into anything that comes out from Wotc...my money stays with Paizo...

Wait! what are we talking about?

If we were voting on something, I nominate no save things. Whenever I participate in a list topic, someone always suggests a trap, poison, monster, ect, that cannot be avoided.

What prompted this necro?

A bad penny.

So for you, reviving a dead thread, even with something new to add, is Bad Wrong Fun?

Well... the links in the first post no longer work, and the thread is full of obsolete speculation about when D&D 5E will come out. So I'd suggest letting it rest in peace and starting your own thread.

OMG when does 5E come out?
