Cavalier's horse stats

What are the stats for a 1st-level cavalier's horse? I'm getting conflicting advice in Rules, and so am asking here due to this being the campaign I'm playing in (and also if there's rules variance I'm unaware of).

In particular: what are its starting hitpoints (do animal companions get a max first hit-die in PFS?), and are the listed bonus feats and tricks for an animal companion available at 1st level, or are they "taken" by the trained-for-combat and light armor proficiency cavalier benefits?

On hit points, from the FAQ:

Quote:

Animal companions receive average hit points per hit die. For d8, the average is 4.5. Multiply 4.5 times the number of hit dice your animal companion has and round down. Recalculate hit points for your companion each time it gains additional hit dice. After its hit points are calculated, add in appropriate bonuses from its Constitution modifier, feats, and so on.

So average hp for every hd, including the first one.

I thought the other thread was striking a reasonable consensus, but that may be because I perceive people to agree with me. In any case, I'll continue here:

The horse doesn't get any bonus feats for being an animal companion, nor does it get the bonus feat listed for horses in the Bestiary. Table 3-8 shows the number of feats (one) it gets as a companion, or if you prefer, as a 2 Hit Dice creature. The player may select this feat.
It gets Light Armor Proficiency as a bonus feat from the cavalier class. As the term implies, this is free and additional to its ordinary feat. It has a total of two feats.

The cavalier's horse has INT 2 and therefore normally can learn 6 tricks. All of these are taken up by the 6 tricks granted by combat training (p. 97: "Essentially, an animal's purpose represents a preselected set of tricks"). It also gains 1 bonus trick that the player may select, for a total of 7 tricks.

May a 7th-level medium-sized cavalier take a wolf mount (wolves increase in size to large at 7th)?

The PFS FAQ says cavaliers can only have the mounts listed on p 33 of the APG. For medium cavaliers, this is a horse or a camel. You can have a wolf if you're small.

You can only if you are the Beast-Rider archetype from UC. At level 7 a medium beast-rider can ride anything that has a natural size of Large.

That's lame and nonsensical -- it means that a small cavalier who drinks a potion of Enlarge Person (to become medium-sized) can ride his now large wolf at 7th+, but that a human cavalier can't! And, just to double-screw the human cavalier, he also cannot start swigging potions of Reduce Person (becoming small-sized) to begin riding a dog or other medium mount!

Ugh...let's find some way to fix that. Suggest that cavaliers can take any mount whose name appears in their class section text.

Wolves don't increase size unless the Giant template is applied to them. As far as I know, there's no place in the cavalier description that applies the Giant template to a mount.

Liberty's Edge

Mounts advance as animal companions (which is why all the halfling cavaliers usually swap out their wolf for a boar at 7th).

Thread necromancy:

Dear Decimverate,

has there been any update on this since 2011? are cavaliers still stuck with horses? if so, have they matched RAW with RAI (i.e. James Jacobs said the 4th level advancement was meant to make hooves primary attacks).

Thank you! any information would be greatly appreciated!
