I am going to run a short one-shot that might turn into more depending on how it goes. To keep this simple please crack open a core rulebook and make a character. 20 buy point and average starting wealth. I will keep this open until Sunday night and pick a crew on Monday.

You walk into the Lastwall Recruiting Center and behind the desk you see the recruiting officer.
The first thing you notice is how good he looks. Not a hair is out of place on his military haircut. His uniform is pressed and clean. Every button and medal is polished to a high-gloss finish.

He stands up and smiles at you. His teeth are so white that you are sure that they glow in the dark.

"Welcome to the recruiting center. You look like you would make a fine solider in Lastwall's army. I am sure that we have an open posting for your class in our ranks. But first tell me what brings you in today."

Please keep your response in a spoiler. Nobody else should know why you are here.

Spoiler:
Azi, and his seven-foot frame, looks down at the immaculate Recruitment Officer. He attempts a smile, but averts his eyes instead. Self-conscious of his blood-encrusted leather armor, the barbarian fears he made a mistake as he replies sheepishly, “I was told I could find a home here.” Azi makes another attempt to look at the Officer, but cannot take his gaze from his muddy, blood-covered boots.

Azi was created a few months ago for a ‘Rise of the Runelords AP' game. The GM disappeared before the game started. I would need to adjust his stats from a 15 point-buy to the 20 and take away his current traits. I would also add to his backstory. Probably something to the effect that after the attack on Sandpoint, Azi got mixed up with a mercenary band for a bit, but did not like the jobs they were doing. He left the mercs and has been on his own until someone told him about Lastwall. Azi is young and shy and still has that mama’s-boy gentleness to him, unless, of course, you piss him off. He is not used to authority figures and does not know how to act in civilized society. But he is a sweet gentle puppy, A really, really big puppy with a strong moral code.

Spoiler:

Garren walks up to the desk, leaving a trail of slightly muddy bootprints behind him. "Money, and a strong dislike of orcs."

Spoiler:
The young man is rather short for a human, five and a half feet MAYBE, with light hair, green eyes, and face that looks like it still isn't considering facial hair. The human looks to be a local, and his accent confirms that yes, he's a Lastwall Native.

"What brings me in today? Why, uhm, I want to serve Lastwall!" Shane seems surprised at the question, but soon is rambling on, "I'm Shane, Shane Driscoll." The name might ring a bell.

"It's the family calling, you know? To stand against the forces of darkness and hold to the light? Iomedae willing, I hope to be a part of the cause. Oh , not that I'm a priest or a warrior, I'm a wizard," A cough "An Evoker, actually. I'm still new to it, but you watch, in no time I'll be exploding orcs and deep frying dark cultists!" He rubs at the amulet around his neck as he bounces on his heels with nervous energy, "So do I get a uniform? I can't really work well with armor, but maybe robes with the colors of Lastwall? Oh sorry, getting ahead of myself. I want to smite the enemies of Lastwall with arcane forces, Sir." He salutes.

the recruitment:
Leaving his longspear leaning outside the door, crossing the threshold, Seamus pauses for a moment as the recruiter stands. 'That is a nice uniform, I wonder if I'll get one of those.' Putting on his best smile the young Taldorian steps forward, straightening out his brown hair, putting a leg forward he gives his second best bow.

'What brings me here?' Clearing his throat, gesturing with his hands as he speaks. "I was traveling through Nirmathas, and I happened to stop in a wonderful tavern in Tamran, a place called "the Blue board" ran by this lovely halfling..."

Seeing the 'recruiters' smile seem to fade, he tries to put his hands at his side. with little success. "I digress, well at this fine establishment there were several Woodsy type fellows talking about what a good job you folks here in Lastwall were doing, fighting the Orcs and watching over that Whispering Tyrant fellow and what not. So the next morning, once I shook off the hangover I said to myself "Seamus, you need to head north and help those good folks of Lastwall and spread a little of Cayden's joy."

His smile brightens as he throws back his cloak, making sure the wooden tankard, hanging from it's own frog near the rapier on his belt, is visible. Straightening his shoulders. "See, I'm a Cleric of Cayden Cailean."

GM PDXCook I am finishing up Seamus background, he was originally a cleric of PEKKO, GOD OF ALE & SPIRITS in a sundered kingdoms game that suffered a TPK. Not a tough switch to Cayden. His basic background is a spoiled Taldorian nobles son, who headed off on his own for adventure.

Azaersi-Azi:
"That is true, son. Lots of people find a home in the military. You will meet others like yourself while you are serving the country. The bonds that you will make during your enlistment will last a lifetime. Some stay on long after their time just to be in that family."

He looks you over and asks, "It seems that you have been doing a lot of fighting lately. Whose blood is that? Are you wanted by the law for any crimes?"

Go ahead and update your character stats and let me know when you are done. As far as background goes you will not need one too deep. That is the thing about the military, they don't ask a lot of questions about your upbringing. You can drop hints or stories about your past while you are in character. That way they only know what you tell them. I am trying something new by doing it this way. It seems more realistic when no one knows about your past.

Garren Teldas:
"I have to be honest with you. There is not a lot of money to be made in a military career. You will have most of your expenses paid for by the army and there is a small monthly amount that you will be paid. The amount is based on your rank."

He looks disapprovingly at the mud you have tracked intohis office and continues, "Killing orcs is not the main goal of the military. It is to protect the citizens and the interests of the government. Your dislike for orcs may come in handy on the front lines but what if you have to work with some of them? "

Spoiler:
When the Recruitment Officer says the word ‘family’, Azi raises his head, just for a moment, smiles and briefly catches his gaze before looking away again. ”I would like that. I miss having a family.”

Azi put his hands to his bloodied armor when asked about it and attempts many times to speak by opening and closing his mouth. His body twitches nervously, but finally he speaks. ”Goblin blood mostly. When they attacked my home in Sandpoint.” He starts to tear up, ”Some of it is from me second Da’ and my Sis.” He holds his arms out, palms up to show the officer the grime and blood on them. Tears roil in his eyes and he finally looks directly at the officer, “I could not save them. They died in my arms.”

The tears stop suddenly and Azi’s voice gets deeper. ”Then I got mad.” The Barbarian’s upward palms suddenly become fists and he lets out a guttural bellow. The Half-Orc starts to pace and punch and kick the air as he snarls and yells. ”Then I smash them. Those filthy goblins. I punch them and I slice them. They cower from me and I chase them down.”

Azi loses control for several moments as he demolishes the air around him. Finally he stops. Breathing heavy, he turns back to the officer. ”Sorry,” he says sheepishly as he transforms back into his shy-natured self. ”Mama always told me I had to work on my temper.” His gaze retreats back to the floor, ”I can get angry sometimes.”

He paces slightly attempting to find his next words, ”Mama always told me it is not good to lie. Not sure about law or crimes. Many months ago, men like you … I mean in same clothes. Like yours only different color came to my first home. They were mean to me’ first Da’ and really mean to Mama. I get angry again and hurt them real bad. Mama told me to run. I listened to Mama and ran. Ran all the way to Sandpoint.”

Not sure if the timeline all fits perfectly. Azi’s original adopted parents lived in Northern Molthune and it was guards and a tax collector that made Azi mad. The Molthune military could still be looking for him ...

Thanks for the invite. I look forward to the game. I'll make the changes shortly.

Spoiler:
Crunch changes are complete.

Spoiler:
A sturdy, very hairy dwarf tromps into the recruitment station in a huff using his spear as walking stick. He gives the immaculately dressed officer a once over and trying to hide his smirk.

"Name's Matias. I 'ear ye mayhap be in need of some help. I 'ave skill with the spear, and Nethys has been known to come to my aid more 'en once." Through a mangle of hair, he peers into the officer's eyes. "Got a place for me?"

GM PDXcook, how many players are you taking?

Recruitment:
A pair of guards plops a tall man in the chair in front of your desk. He is bound with his hands in irons in front of him. He struggles around in the chair reacting to the rough treatment from the guards. "Captain said to bring this one to you, if you have no use for 'em we'll gladly throw him back in his cell"

The man in front of you looks around the room, and then back at you. He has elvish features, blue eyes and wearing dark rags. "Well, like he said its this or back in my cell. I am Drekarth Rex, a local hunter.I'm willing to work. I do not have any military experience, but I am good at acquiring things and familiar with hunting to feed myself. Is true that last winter when game was scarce I stole from a local merchant, but I swear that was out of desperation and not greed."

The man seems sincere though the guards are at the ready to strike him should he act up.

This was Pathfinder 1 Ed right? Only core rules no traits ect?

I am thinking 5 maybe 6

Drekarth Rex:
Yes Pathfinder 1E. Core Only. What class are you thinking of playing?

Shane Driscoll:
The officer chuckles, " The army can always use more arcane casters to blast the enemy. It always seems to make the battle go faster. There is a standard uniform for mages in the army. It is mostly to keep our troops from bashing you. They get nervous when they see a wizard blasting thing."

Seamus Passeri:
"Cayden is always a welcome deity after the battle is over and the troops take stock in the good fortune of being alive. The army can always use divine caster to help turn the tide of battle and give aid and comfort to those who are injured and dying.

Spoiler:
A rogue.

Spoiler:
The earnest young wizard nods vigorously "Yes, Sir. I don't blame them for being cautious, Sir.Lots of stories of dark wizards up to no good. I'll do the uniform proud, you'll see, assuming I get the chance. Family honor and all." a breath "I won't let me my sword swinging fellow soldiers down"

Oh, a shortbackground is in the link, but essentially he's the son of two heroes, a Cleric and Paladin of Iomedae, but doesn't have the gift for sword or divine so learned arcane magics instead. Now he's eager to prove himself worthy of his family in their calling of protecting lastwall. Very much the son trying to make good with his own gifts :) Some other characters with local lore might know the lastname or might not? And I don't see Shane being ashamed of them but nor is he going to throw it in folks faces. I can down play his parents 'fame' as much or little as needed for the story and maybe their 'legend' is more in his head. I just thought the 'over eager earnest local boy' would be a fun niche

the recruitment:
Hearing the good news, Seamus stands a bit taller, "That's great, I'm glad Cayden is welcome. I'm happy to lend aid where I can." He pauses for a moment. "I don't know how much comfort I'll be able to give. But I can at least give 'em Ale, yeah.'

He gestures towards the recruiters uniform. "Um, when do I get a uniform?"

Matias Longren:
The officer looks you over and says, " Of course, the army has a place for you. Divine casters are the glue that holds the troops together. Sometimes literally. " He walks out from behind the desk, "You seem very confident sir. Dwarves are known for the direct approach but can they follow orders without question.

Drekarth Rex:
The officer leans back in his chair and pinches the bridge of his nose, "Very well Sargent, leave him with me." As the guards leave he points at the chair in front of his desk and says,"You. Sit."

After you settle in the chair he looks you in the eye, "I hate it when they send me guys like you. I don't feel that you are here for the right reason. I think you can cause more harm to our troops than the enemy can. But today is your lucky day. Things have been slow and I am behind in my quota. I am going to let you join the army but rest assured that if I hear of you causing any problems you will wish you had gone to prison."

Recruiting is now closed. Congratulations! All six of you are going to boot camp.

You have two days to finish up your crunch and post in the Discussion Thread.

Congratulations everyone! Let's go kill stuff!

Spoiler:

Responding to the recruiter, Garren says "I know it may not seem like a lot of money for you, but someone from the hinterlands know the value of regular meals. And as for dealing with orcs, I don't trust any of them entirely, but I should be able to follow orders. I'm not some maniac, I've just got a healthy suspicion from fighting them on the frontier most of my life.
Sorry to be so late on this. The past week was rather packed.
