Fear The Boot interview 17: Ryan Dancey is working on a fantasy MMO based on a successful hobby game property

Video Games

Hmm wild speculation but isn't Pathfinder a wildly successful fantasy game?

Edited - thanks TH :-)

Paizo Employee Developer

I bet it's a Warcraft MMO. When it comes to fantasy games, you can't get much more popular than that!

P A I Z O is a successful game company.

Pathfinder is a game.

Ryan Dancey is more probably working on the upcoming WoD mmo.

In the interview he said fantasy.

How is WoD not fantasy? I see vampires and werewolves and mages and ghosts. Looks pretty fantasy to me.

Wasn't CCP working on a WoD MMO? And didn't Dancey work at CCP during its announcement?

And those leather-clad BDSM vampire goth girls are certainly somebody's fantasy! ;)

This is something new - post CCP it hasn't been announced yet.

Er...are you sure about that? Or are you thinking of a different one?

In the interview he says that this is a new project since he left CCP and he is currently organizing funding. So it has not been officially announced.

Woot!

Chivalry & Sorcery Online! Or possible Ars Magica Online!

You heard it here first!

CCP bought out White Wolf (the company that makes World of Darkness) a few years ago. This allowed White Wolf some slack in their publishing, with the understanding that they didn't have to put out as many books as they were putting out (a problem for some) and CCP would use the IP for whatever they wanted.

They announced a World of Darkness MMO a couple years ago. It is using the Vampire: the Masquerade setting, and as far as it is planned it is only going to be Vampire based.

They have kept specifics to themselves, but like in CCP's other MMO, EVE, they plan on the game being mostly run by players and the game revolving around player economies (economies of blood?). Also the graphics are supposed to look spectacular, and they've done a lot to allow for customization and fashion. There's some links on youtube you can find that will show some of the modelling and how fashion designers have been brought in to help or something.

Oh World of Darkness is fantasy (emo, gothy, self loathing, nihilistic, sexy fantasy) but the line of questioning and the responses inferred that the new project was traditional fantasy.

Evil. Just evil. Mark and Chris both not denying it. Evil.

Probably not Shadowrun, since IIRC there's some wierdness regarding the license (didn't microsoft own the rights for videogames, while Topps had everything else but licensed that out to Catalyst?). I'd lose too much time in my life to an SR MMO however, if one was ever made.

Eclipse Phase? Be still my black beating heart... probably not, because I've heard nothing even when certain friends have been drunk on sake. What kind of friends are they if they tell me nothing other than 'cool stuff upcoming, and no I won't tell you.'? :P

Yeah, I basically have no earthly idea what property Dancey might be working with. I'm not cool enough. *pout*

Maybe it's D&D. Hasbro recently got the license back from Atari.

To echo others it's not WoD. That is an announced MMO he was working on when he was at CCP. This is something new that he has been working on since leaving CCP.

Obviously it is for the Top Secret RPG.

If it WAS Shadowrun, i'd probably die of a nerd-gasm. I dream feverishly of that game finally getting its due in the MMO arena.

Work on the Warhammer 40k MMO has been plodding in the background for a little now. It might be that one...

I'm pretty sure it's going to be "Tunnels & Internet Trolls".

When Ryan Dancey took over the Living City Campaign from RPGA he promised a Digital Revolution in the way the campaign would be run. It never happened and the campaign was dead within a couple of years.

Dancey has a history of being long on promises, but not even getting off the launch pad when it comes to delivery. I'll take this with a truckload of salt.

This was my guess, and the first place my mind goes when I hear "successful hobby game property".

I'm pretty sure Ryan isn't working with Vigil on the 40K game, but can't say with absolute certainty.

Does the "I was right - in your face doubters happy dance..... I win da IntarWeBz"

I think he was probably referring to Pathfinder Online, but it's hard to say for sure without something official. You know they aren't going to say anything about it until it's official.

If they do make some kind of "Pathfinder Online," what do you think they'll name it? I'd look for some kind of announcement from Paizo if what he said was related to a Paizo property.

You should read this (if you haven't already).

Heh. I thought it was obvious I had read it already from my reply. I guess I was too subtle in my "playing dumb." I referred to it by name twice.

You know like:
Person A says "I think it's this!"
Person B, C, and D theorize.
Correct answer is discovered some time later.
Person A does happy dance, comments, points out correctness.
Person E (me) pretends to have no idea what's going on.

Maybe that's just something people I know do. (Or it could just be me, that may have been a coping mechanism for ridicule in junior high school.)

Sorry dude I didn't pick up that you were joking around... Itarwebz no good for subtle humour doesn't carry tone and intent :-)
