Varian Jeggare question

Tales

Have Jeggare's stats been posted anywhere?

I know Radovan has been done in Kobold Quarterly (issue 14, pp12-13) but not his boss...?

Not that I know of, but Inner Sea Magic lists him as a 6th-level wizard.

That fits his spell-casting abilities in Prince of Wolves, although he obviously gains a couple of levels before the end of Master of Devils. Also, it seems logical that he'd have some aristocrat levels and maybe some fighter in him.

But no, we haven't seen him statted out anywhere that I've seen.

Hey Mr Gross, congrats on the series. They're great characters. Keep up the good work.

Perhaps Mr Sutter could oblige, seeing as he did Radovan for us?

Ironically, seeing as I statted up Radovan for Kobold Quarterly, I actually really, really dislike statting up characters from fiction in an official capacity. The problem is that it ends up tying your hands more than you might like, and a character's stat block is only a single snapshot of the character's development. It's one thing to stat up a character from a classic series who's no longer being used. But statting up a character that's still being written has a tendency to either disappoint the fans (when the character abilities change over the course of a series, making the stats outdated) or hogtying the author into never letting his or her character grow or advance.

That said, however, I'm a HUGE fan of fan-generated stat blocks for fictional characters. So while you won't see stats for Jeggare from us any time soon, we'd dearly love to see yours! :D

I feel exactly the same way but didn't want to step on James's toes by posting earlier in case he felt differently. I too would love to see what readers make of the characters, especially if those interpretations are different from what I've had loosely assembled in my notes.

I see what you guys are saying, but many of us like "official" stats.

Thanks!

Yes, I'd prefer official stats.

Incidentally is Radovan's CHA of 6 a typo? He's described as 'rakishly handsome' in the stat block...

I agree that Radovan's CHA should be much higher.

And this is the problem with official stats. :)

(And yeah, if I were doing it over, I'd make his Charisma higher.)

I think there are some differences between Characters in our beloved game Pathfinder, and a character in a novel.

Usually in a novel, you will have one or two main characters that are most likely the main “protagonists” and the heroes, and support characters, mentors etc. The hero often has to over come a variety of different obstacles and challenges as the story progresses. And the main protagonist can often have a well rounded and complex character full of quirks and unexpected turns.

A Pathfinder character, on the other hand is defined by the structure of the game. The game is for the most part designed to have a small group of specialists work together as part of a team to creatively overcome out fight out think all of the obstacles that lie in their way. For the most part I don’t think pathfinder character classes are designed to be “lone wolfs”.

An Author of course is only constrained by his imagination, concerning a character. And as Mr. Gross and Sutter pointed out, “Official Stats” can later tie the hands of an author.

As much as I “ love “ official Stats…. Perhaps the author can suggest this is what the character might be…. before this adventure…but who knows how the character will grow, or what will be revealed about his past in the future…

Maybe this will leave the author’s hands free to shape his character, as he wants to, while feeding us hungry little fan munchkins some statistics to chew on, have a tug of war over, and yes gripe about.

Mr Gross I am looking forward to reading the book….I happen to like Varian Jaggere and Randovan. I also like their relationship as well. The two characters work well together. And I hopefully will get my mits on that Judge Dee movie you suggested on another thread.

I love, love, love stats for fictional characters. The Forgotten Realms 2e book that consisted of only stats of fictional characters was one of my favorites.

But, if the main characters will return and y'all aren't interested, I can understand.

Could we get stats for some of the NPCs though? Burning Cloud Devil is too cool for school not to have a statblock.

I'd have thought it would be a good marketing idea to help get subscribers to the Tales line if they got a version of the book with characters statted up in a special supplement.

Maybe with new magic items or spells mentioned in the book too?
