Oh I know you are not a newbie, and I actually went back in to clarify that not all people who do what you refer to are new nor do all people who have been around for a while support the actions of other longer participating members but I don't think that is clear.
I can see what you are saying about the emotional impact of this form of "play" and, like I said, I am guilty of it too. (To be fair I am newer so I can blame bad teaching ;-) )
It hasn't been my experience that it drives anger except in a few people and those few people are sometimes ones I have a hard time empathizing with due to their perceived tone or comments (though that doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to feel slighted or angry).
I lurk a lot and post more these days but it seems that tensions can run high on this board and the FAWTL brand sock puppeting fun seems harmless enough in most cases I have experienced it that I am surprised that it seems like an issue...that said I follow a few folks like AMiB around the boards and those conversations can have a lot of different threads of emotion or mental complexity to them that I can see having a puppet or three thousand show up might be aggravating when everyone's cylinders are already firing.
I guess for me I don't see it as being as much an issue as you might but then again I may just be in the wrong threads and not seen the disruption you have experienced.
That said, it would be good to know for certain whether or not your attempts to flag for issues is even considered an issue by the Powers that Be because the culture seems to support the current paradigm and I don't think you should have to be unknowingly fighting for a community standard that isn't going to be enforced if that makes sense.

I think everyone subscribes to this train of thought way too much. We have a FOCUS button for a reason. You don't need to venture into threads you don't agree with. Be mature about things. If you read something on here you don't agree with, close the forum AND MOVE ON.

They do help to remind us that what we are discussing is, in fact, a game and should be enjoyed as such. Additionally, as they are typically very short in nature, they are quite easy to skip if that is what I am more in the mind of. But, as with anything else in life and especially on the internet, YMMV.I don't have any issue with humorous off topic posts either. What I have issue with is posters deliberately attempting to bury or kill a thread with off-topic posts because they don't like the topic being discussed. One is playing around, the other is being a jerk.
I generally dislike doing +1 posts, but Caedwyr hit the nail with this one.

More and more, I agree with this. I have seen instances where people were being heated but respectful, but others got tired of it and smurfed the crap out of the thread. This I think is as bad as standing up in a town hall meeting and yelling "smurf" because you don't like what others are saying. Sure, it's free speech, but it's still being a jerk.
What's hard for me is, coming up with guidelines as to how to differentiate between the two. I'm not sure I can, beyond a supreme-court-I'll-know-it-when-I-see-it definition of obscene, which is problematic because I have seen threads get smurfed where I thought, "Damn, that's some funny stuff, and thank goodness too because things were getting too heated."

Or maybe, just maybe, I'm actually annoyed about the many times you and others have entered a thread with your first post in such threads being a sock puppet inanity or a profilation of little blue men, all with the intent of shutting a thread down or stifle discussion in the thread.

Normally, I'd agree, except I'll admit that I do try to bury threads (only in the OTD, of course) I don't like. Why? Because they are normally filled with political/religious type flaming crap that I find either insulting, abusive, or in violation of the Paizo rule to not start flamewar threads. I do often flag posts in these threads, but since Paizo refuses to eliminate or hide them away in a separate section (a decision I completely understand), I tend to try and bury them. Think of it as my own way to try and emulate Batman - a neverending and futile effort to eliminate something I think is harmful to the boards.

Here's a wild and crazy idea!
How about listening to Sebastian's advice to me on the previous page?Ignore such threads if you find them offensive, much better for your blood pressure (erm... yeah, okay, undead, right...) and the rest of us don't have to complain about you trying to shut down the threads.
Deal?

I do, on occasion. I use Focus. I make my Will save versus flamewar.
But sometimes, that stuff annoys me.
But I guess maybe I'm not allowed to be annoyed, huh?
Or, you could also take Sebastian's advice and ignore my "asshattery".
Also, I hear there's this thing called an "ignore" feature. I'd use it myself, but I'm paranoid about putting something on my computer that I don't know where or who it's coming from.

Strawman, I never said that. You can be as annoyed as you like to! How you react to that annoyance, however, is different.

Somewhat more difficult to do when you fill up a thread with it (hyperbole, granted), especially if I'm engaged in or find a thread interesting.
When it's just a single or two posts then it's easier to ignore. When it's a page and a half, then it gets more difficult and certainly, IMO, it has strayed into the "don't be a jerk" territory.Mairkurion {tm} |

I seriously hate posting something nice and full of let's all understand each other s&&+. I'm terrible at it. But, stay with me here:
When I first started posting here (or when Aberzombie first started posting here - I can't remember which one of us came first), Aberzombie and I had some spectacular flamewars regarding politics. Moorluck wanted to beat the crap out of me over my thoughts on religion (or, more accurately, my way of exspressing my thoughts on religion). I'm half convinced heathansson is on step 211 of a complex 534 step plan that will result in my death at the hands of a large goat and a jar of goat viagra.
But, I realized that, despite their obviously incorrect positions on important political and religious issues (natch!), they were good guys, often f*~@ing hilarious, and, at the base of it, gamers. So, I started ignoring politics threads and got to know them better. They learned to tolerate me and we pulled up a stool.
This doesn't work with every poster. Some of them are so defined by their politics/religion/game design godliness that there's no reasoning with them. I'm not saying I don't still come out swinging in politics/religion threads, but when I do, I usually have a no-holds-barred idealogue in my sights. That's not these guys. Don't let politics threads color your view of who they are.
I think I'll delete this in a minute. Too sappy.

Ha! Too late, it's now enshrined here forever!
But seriously, I'd happily pull up a stool and share a cold one or throw some dice around with anyone here. I think, until proven otherwise, that all the people here are Good People (TM), even those I might disagree with on politics, game theory or religion.I just think it's bloody annoying to have some threads that I enjoy be derailed by the disruptive (to those threads) behaviour of some posters, just because they don't enjoy those threads.
If religion or politics threads annoy or offend you (general you), stay out of them and ignore them! If you do want to participate, do so on a mature level and present your evidence/argument coherently.

I...honestly can't believe that this thread exists.
I lurked here for, I don't know, maybe a week before posting, and I observed that the world of alt avatars and smfs is in fact at the heart of what this place is. It appealed to me, so I joined in. I was really happy that nobody had claimed the "Obvious Troll Is Obvious" avatar yet, so I snapped it up. Its probably the most valuable IP that I own. I can't for the life of me imagine somebody coming to this board and telling AZ, Sebastian, or any of those other folks how they ought to act. It's almost as if you didn't lurk for more than five minutes before deciding that this is the forum community for you. If that's the case, it should be obvious that that's not a good idea.
