FWIW, I was writing up some Pathfinder versions of magic items from Planescape: Torment, an AD&D based video game which had an "earring slot" for several of its characters. I used the headBAND slot (where decorative items near the face and forehead go, not the head slot, where hats and helmets go) for them.

Backing up both Diego and mdt on this one (Hi, guys, how're you? ... Also, kind of worrisome when we all three agree on something.), at least as far as 3.5 D&D goes.
For your own games, you can, of course, rule something else. I can easily see DQ's design working, or perhaps even something like the way rings on a hand work being applied to rings on an ear (one each ear); this could be part of a greater "whole" (i.e. rings count as rings whether on ears or hands or toes, or... elsewhere), or it could be it's own new body slot (the "ear" slot).
For game balance, though (and lack of both complication and unfortunate implications) I'd go with the slotless thing.
An AP has earrings in it and lists them as Slotless.
I'm very curious as to which AP, as I haven't run across it yet in Pathfinder. Is it from the 3.5-Era PF (Legacy of Fire and earlier) or from the actual PF-game era (Council of Thieves and beyond)?

It slots in the slot you want it to.
If you want a Ring worn on the ear, it's Ring slot regardless of where you wear it.
If you want it a slotted wondrous item worn on the ear, it's the head slot.
If you want it a slotless item, it's a slotless item and you can hang it from your nose if you like, wear it on your wrist or ankle, etc, all for just doubling the price.

Mutineer's Bane Earring - slotless.
Nice! Thanks!
EDIT 2: this also means that "officially" in PF rules, they're slotless now. You may still rule in your own game as you wish, however.
Makes sense that it would be part of the Skull and Shackles, too. :)
