Not mentioned previously:
Q - I know, modern times, but still good.
The Sword and the Sorcerer
1 Million BC Dinosaurs and cavemen were only some of the hazards.

I forgot one:Westender

Not necessarily a D&D mood, but these two positively make my palms itch to roll dice in a hard-boiled, Traveller-esque, RPG universe:

  • Firefly
  • Serenity

Liberty's Edge

Not fantasy but Silverado with Scott Glenn, Kevin Kline, Kevin Costner and Danny Glover flows just like an rpg session.

I watched the old Mysterious Island last night, and the all the giant bugs, birds and crustaceans made me want to play D&D.

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 8

Beastmaster is one of my all time favorites. I first saw it when I was 4yrs old and my dad told me it was "He-Man" movie. I've always wanted a giant temple with a fire pit on top.

Sometimes I'm surprised by movies because I think they'll totally suck by they come off like a RPG adventure and I find myself enjoying it- Prince of Persia and Jonah Hex.

Someone needs to make a module based on Michael Mann's "The Keep."

"Hawk the Slayer"- It needs to be seen to be believed. Imagine taking your gaming group out into the woods and making a movie. It's like that.

I watched The Sword of Doom the other day and it made me impatient for the Tien Xa book.

End of movie spoilers!

Spoiler:
I would have liked the movie but the ending ticked me off. That one guy spends the whole movie practicing some thrust technique and never fights the other guy. The movie just kinda' ended right in the middle of a fight when he goes crazy and starts killing everyone. When I looked at the DVD player, it was exactly two hours long. I wondered if the studio had a time constraint and just decided to cut it at the two hour mark. Besides that, I can't honestly remember much more of the movie has it's been 5 or 6 years).

If you like ninjas and gunslingers from "Ultimate Combat", I recommend "The Warrior's Way" which is available ondemand on Netflix.

Aha! Thanks, that makes sense now.

Spoiler:
I still complain to my friends about this movie-how I watched this guy practice stabbing at a beam of light to perfect the one move that could defeat the sword of doom guy and never used

Sovereign Court

Not surprised though it is interesting to note that, unless I missed it on someone's list, no one has mentioned either Dungeons & Dragons movie...

I stll have a soft spot for "Sword and the Sorcerer", gimmicky sword, cheesy effects, silly story and all.

Hmmm, how strange...

More on The Sword of Doom from the liner booklet essay by Geoffrey O'Brien:

Spoiler:

Even while the novel [Daibosatu Toge which ran as a newspaper serial for at least three decades] was still appearing in installments, stage adaptations were made of its early episodes, and these were followed by a two-part 1935 film version (now presumed lost) whose directors included Hiroshi Inagaki....After the war, it was remade repeatedly, in three parts (1953) by Kunio Watanabe, in three parts (1957-59) by Tomu Uchida, and in two-parts (1960-61) by Kenji Misumi and Kazuo (aka Issei) Mori. The freeze-frame that concludes Okamoto's film [the one being discussed] should be seen not as an ending but as a pause while awaiting the later installments that were never made (...). The gaps and unresolved story lines that are apt to bewilder a viewer coming to the film cold would not pose a problem for an audience thoroughly familiar with the source material; Okamoto's film might be called Famous Scenes from "Daibosatu Toge," a series of set pieces content to skip over much connecting matter.

I was not familiar with any of this other material--I just thought the film was visually awesome.

Braveheart and Pirates of the Caribbean. Braveheart isn't fantasy, but it gets me in the mood nonetheless, and PotC gets me in the mood for an Age of Sail campaign.

Yep. This movie kind of rocks. It took me two sittings to finish it off, but that had nothing to do with the quality of the film and more to do with the amount of alcohol I consumed.

Check it out!

As I'm sitting here prepping for tonight's last session in Harrowstone Prison, my roommate is watching Goemon.

I'm only looking up every few minutes, but it looks pretty awesome.

Bastard!! is the most D&D show ever! Not the high and noble D&D of books but the goofy and silly D&D of real games :)

Yeah, glad you had fun with it. The movie is very, very minable.

I forgot to mention Outpost. Everyone loves ghost Nazi's.

Oh man, ocean druids fighting naval battles with samurai ninjas and cannons and Da Vinci flying machines. This movie is such a D&D campaign.

I recently started watching Valhalla Rising. I only watched the first half hour before I fell asleep (which is no reflection on the film, only an indication of how busy December is for me) but it was crazy brutal/good.

Oh, I forgot to mention:

So I finished watching this and although I liked it a great deal, it is not, in fact, very D&D. Unless you think The Seventh Seal or Aguirre, the Wrath of God is D&D, in which case it totally is.

The Exchange

There are so many fantastic movies on this thread and thankfully I haven't seen them all.

Am I the only one who feels Fantasy movies are a vastly under-represented category in movies today?

Shadow Lodge

Just saw House of Flying Daggers yesterday. Not nearly as good as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon of course, but a lot of fun regardless. I'm left wondering how to work a bamboo forest into my next campaign.

InVinoVeritas wrote:
House of Flying Daggers

I have hard time remembering which one was House of Flying Daggers and which one was Hero, but luckily my compound-mate has both of them, so maybe I'll watch them again, soon.

He also bought that samurai trilogy that Paizo recommends in Jade Regent and, although I haven't seen them yet, he says they're awesome!

EDIT: After watching the trailer, oh yeah, I remember this now.

Dark Archive

Call it a hunch but I think this movie may prove to be popular when it comes out.

I just realized Guillermo del Toro worked on the screenplay as well as Peter Jackson. Assuming they got along... that's awesome!

The Exchange

Not a movie but a series.....and not serious....
KROD MANDOON AND THE FLAMING SWORD OF FIRE!!!!

What's up, you oxymoron you?

Dont forget THE THREE MUSKTEERS AND THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK

Also DRAGONHEART

Silver Crusade

I went through the lists put up....gotta say a lot bring back alot of memories (ahhh.... Hawk the Slayer). Not surprised by the anime choices...especially Record of Lodoss War. But I'd like to add some as well:

Avatar: The Last Airbender (looking forward to the new series)
The Slayers (classic, Next, Try, Revolution, and Evolution - R)
Tenchi Muyo
Escaflowne (the series more than the movie)
The Wanderers: El Hazard
Magic Knight Rayearth
Dragon Half ("I, Damaramu, shall regret this....")
Midnight Chronicles (watched it on Netflix and discovered I liked it alot)
Kingdom of Heaven (Ridley Scott did a classic here)
Star Wars: Clone Wars (the original animated series by Genndy Tartakovsky)
Tron: Legacy (science fantasy goodness here....)
Riese Kingdom Falling (also watched this on Netflix)
Inception

I get my best gaming inspiration from non-fantasy stuff: houstonderek is sure to have recognized stuff ripped off from The Maltese Falcon and Rio Bravo, for example.

When it comes to John Wayne films, I generally prefer the Howard Hawks ones to the John Ford ones, although who am I kidding? Those are awesome, too. But anyway, as much as I love Rio Bravo, some of the casting choices are too jarring for me to take serious. Which is unfair, because Dino acts his ass off in this one. But I'm just griping to make myself look smart--this movie kicks ass!

There really should be no need to say anything about The Maltese Falcon: everything about it is just awesome--Bogart, Huston, Lorre, Greenstreet. There are much more gritty flicks out there, but I think it'd be safe to say that this is probably the touchstone film noir of all time--and I think it was the third attempt to make a movie out of Hammett's masterpiece.

Anyway, these movies are both totally D&D movies. In RB there is totally a party, and, even by the end of MF it's like Bogart's trapped in a room of CE drow adventurers! And what's his alignment, btw, LN? CN? True neutral?!? The alignment system breaks down under the moral ambiguities of film noir! Aargh!
