Anyway as you can see I'm getting myself back on track. Now...looking at the PDF with the KM rules I'm making sure to educate myself properly on the rules so I don't make a debackle. For the moment the gameplay thread is for roleplaying, developing relationships and so on so feel free to interact with people however you want. Maybe love is in sight for some or terror for others.

Part 2 will start after we finish kingdom building for a year of events. Lots can happen in roleplaying and gameplay perspective in that time.

Few things to start with the build of the kingdom to start off with:

Alignment

A kingdom’s alignment affects its statistics, so choose your kingdom’s alignment carefully. Lawful kingdoms gain a +2 bonus on Economy checks. Chaotic kingdoms gain a +2 bonus on Loyalty checks. Good kingdoms gain a +2 bonus on Loyalty checks. Evil kingdoms gain a +2 bonus on Economy checks. Neutral kingdoms gain a +2 bonus on Stability checks (a truly neutral kingdom gains this bonus twice).

Leadership (think you've all covered this)

Name (Covered: Vertaria)

That's it I think. And the idea of what building goes first.

Anyone can make the rules, but I'd like to ask you to make the decision so we don't end up with 1 or 2 people making rolls at the same time.

I suggest a hiarachy so if one guy can't get online for a while the other can take over rolling in his place.

Or as the PDF suggests, certain members might be designated for the rols, like the PDF states as a example:
"for example, the Treasurer might make Economy checks and the Warden may wish to make all checks having to do with events under her command. Ultimately, since a kingdom is shared by all the players, it doesn’t matter who makes the kingdom’s Economy, Loyalty, and Stability checks, but assigning them can be fun nonetheless."

Also I'd like to see that near sheet again that Bron produced so that we're all on the same page and I can share it in the campaign info for all to view.

Since you control 0 hexs when you start, we can skip upkeep and jump into improvement phase.

Found the rules online

Also considering the leadership Bron is after, yes he can take it for a NPC who stays behind making magic items. Same rules apply and you can make the NPC includer her backstory or leave it up to me.

Male Human Bard 4

I believe we had settled (pun intended) on Neutral Good for the Kingdom's alignment.

Here is the excel sheet. I've filled it with the NPCs but not their bonuses (bonii?). If you wouldn't mind doing it, Aron, we can go through the next phases.

Male Human Bard 4

So guys, I suggest the following actions on our first kingdom turn. Could you guys go over it and offer some critique?

Month 1

Upkeep Phase - skipped due to Size 0.

Improvement Phase
1. Leadership Adjustments: Leaders set as per the excel sheet.
2. Claim Hexes: Claim 1 hex (the hex formerly known as Stag Lord`s fort hex)Spend 1 BP, increase Size to 1, increase Control DC to 21, increase Consumption to 1.
3. Establish and Improve Cities: Establish city (Spend 2 BP. Increase Consumption to 2.), Build the Castle (Spend 27 BP, Economy +2, Loyalty +2, Stability +2; Defense Modifier +8;
4. Build Roads: Build 1 hex of roads (Spend 1 BP.)
5. Establish Farmlands: None. No land avaliable.
6. Issue Edicts: Change as follows:
Promotion: None. -1 Stability.
Taxation: None. +1 Loyalty
Festivals: None. -1 Loyalty

Income Phase
1. Deposits: None. Unless someone is feeeling really generous!
2. Withdrawals: None.
3. Sell Valuable Items: None.
4. Generate Income: Roll to be determined when we calculate the bonus.

Looks good, Bron. I'm happy letting you guys go ahead and build the kingdom as you see fit. That's probably half the reason why my PC feels the same way.

Let me know if you need me to roll anything; otherwise, go nuts!

Male Human Bard 4

Yeah, I think this first month we actually don't have much of a choice. We have hard and low limits on the number of stuff we can do.

Male Human Bard 4

I just noticed the leadership positions at the excel file are wrong. Ganit should take the Spymaster position, which means we need someone for the Marshal position. Maybe Gwen?

Either of those Greenbelt hunters should do the job.

Master of Gaming and Grognardia Current map

I'll fill in the sheet when I can actually download it :p

Master of Gaming and Grognardia Current map

For some reason it wouldn't let me sign up last night, then again I was using a lot of bandwidth pre-loading x-com :p Argh, game soooo close to release.

Also chief Sootscales does suit the position of spymater, but Ganit can take it if he likes, though he's still like a decent position. Maybe he should be the Marshal?

Edit: by moving Ganit there are now two position open: Marshall and Royal Assassin. You also have Chief Sootscale and Kressel to place in those positions.

Kressel is quite strong and Chief Sootscale is certainly very dexterous due to his size, which should give you a idea where you want to put them.

Master of Gaming and Grognardia Current map

DM in a game I'm in is looking for someone to join as we've ended up with a character short. Here's the recruitment page so you know what's legal and what build for the character. Don't be afraid to PM the DM for any questions you might have: The Awakening

Male Human Bard 4

Did you guys manage to download the excel file? If not I can always find another hosting site.

Master of Gaming and Grognardia Current map

yeah I managed to get it done in the end. I think it was because of the pre-load for xcom. Now I just sit here, staring at the release date to hurry up.

As I said above there are two positons open. Marshall and Royal Assassin.

Marshal:
The Marshal helps organize patrols and enforces justice in rural and wilderness regions.

Royal Assassin:
The Royal Assassin can serve as a public executioner, a headsman, or a shadowy assassin.

To be honest, having kobolds as your patrol group is pretty cool idea, but of course it won't be just kobolds. Sootscales will just be the guy in charge, doesn't mean everyone is going to be a kobold under his command, just like as Jameson is the general it doesn't mean the army is going to only consist of half-orcs.

Obviously.

Master of Gaming and Grognardia Current map

Okey, I placed the two in the obvious places as no one spoke up.

Here are the roll stats:

Economy +25

Loyalty: +12

Stability: +14

Female Changling(Hulking) Sorcerer - Orc Bloodline/5 - HP: 12/28; AC16,T14,FF13

Sorry I have not been on here. If I am ever silent on a thread for more than a day, please PM me. My campaign thread was updating for the Gameplay tab, but not this OOC.

The spreadsheet looks great Bron. Do we have to spend 1BP to claim the initial hex? Or do we get that for free. Also, can we also get one more hex in the first month or are we limited to the one where the Stag Lord's fort was located?

I think we should move to getting the Sootscale mine in the kingdom and then continue northeast to the edge of the map to get the bonus for trade with Varnhold.

Also, do we get a bonus for a centrally located capital? I seem to remember that from somewhere, or is it already included?

Unless someone else wants to make them, here are the first month's rolls. We should decide on whether we are going to do this on a rolling basis or have someone assigned. As rulers, Bron and I can take turns. Ganit and Telias seem to be not wanting to do this, at least at present. Not sure about James and Zorestar.

Right now I say Bron and I take turns. If someone else wants to make some of the rolls, speak now, or forever hold your peace.

Loyalty: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (15) + 12 = 27
Stability: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (6) + 14 = 20
Economy: 1d20 + 25 ⇒ (16) + 25 = 41

--> DM Aron - I think that these are in the right order, but am not entirely certain as I have not really looked at the rules in about 6 months.

I had posted da rulez before Bronwyn's post.

He was waiting for a Economy roll, not the others. I just mentioned what the bonuses were for future reference.

Control DC is 21 and Carina rolled 41 so 41 divided by 5 = 8 BP gain

Now you have 28 BP to play with.

For the next phase here are the stats:

Loyalty: +27
Stability: +14
Economy: +16

Remember, these bonuses are to keep in mind for when you need to roll them.

The Event phase for this month shall be skipped. Onto the next month:

This will be month 2 and you have your cool, snazzy castle for everyone to live in and people who wish to become servants to the new lords.

Female Changling(Hulking) Sorcerer - Orc Bloodline/5 - HP: 12/28; AC16,T14,FF13

Is there a reason that Loyalty seems to have increased by 10 and Economy dropped by 10? Did you switch the 10 from the Bron/Carina leadership? I would think that we want that to remain in the Economy at least for the first few months.

whoops, sorry I copied your order and I copied the order in which the spreadsheet is in. Here's the real order:

Economy: +27
Stability: +14
Loyalty: +16

Vertaria Month 1

Anyway as I said, all that was needed was the Economy roll last time. These are just states for whoever wants to roll for the start of the next month which should start with Upkeep Phase:

1. Stability Check – Make a Stability check against your Command DC. If you make the check, you reduce your kingdom’s unrest by 1. A failure by five or more, means Unrest increases by 2.

2. Pay Consumption – You must pay your kingdoms Consumption from your Treasury (50 Build Points). A kingdoms Consumption is equal to its size plus the number of city districts it contains plus adjustments for Edicts minus 2 per hex of farmland. If at some point you are not able to pay for the month’s Consumption, your BP drops into the negative. Every time you end an Upkeep phase with negative BP in your Treasury, your kingdom’s Unrest increases by 2.

3. Fill Vacant Magic Item Slots – If there are any vacant magic item slots in any cities (you need to build structures that grant magic items), randomly roll new items to fill these slots.

4. Unrest calculation – If your Unrest reaches 11 or higher, you loose control of one hex selected by the ruler. Any improvements to the hex (roads, buildings, farmland, etc.) are lost and must be rebuilt when the hex is reclaimed. Any settlements in the hex become towns that must be annexed if they are to be reclaimed into your kingdom. Finally, if the kingdom employs a Royal Assassin, reduced your total Unrest by 1 at the end of this phase.

Edit: Also, anyone actually have a picture of the kingdom sheet? I mean the picture for you to see exactly where to place buildings and such. All found in the KM player's manuel.

I'm fine with Carina and Bron rolling. James is currently in the middle of a change in faith as well as his new position of "power".

Male Human Bard 4

Yeah, ideally Jameson would roll Stability, Carina (or Ganit) Economy and Bronwyn would roll the odd Loyalty check (they're not so frequent). But waiting for everyone to roll would slow things down considerably, and since it's virtual dice I guess it doesn't matter. I can rotate with Carina easily, maybe when we need to make a check due to an event one of you guys could do it as we figure out the situation. I mean, maybe there's bandits/goblins in the woods and we need to make a Stability check: We could send Jameson and a few armed men to take care of the situation and he rolls the Stability check.

Male Half-Orc Slayer (Vanguard)/14 | AC 21 T 13 F 19 | HP 130 | F +13* R +13 W +8* | Init +11 | Perc +23*

Makes sense.

Male Human Bard 4

Also, Ganit is pretty deep in trouble. on the upside, we'll have the first shotgun wedding of your kingdom! Now there's an achievement!

Male Human Bard 4

What do you guys think of this way to compromise on choosing which buildings to build?

Everyone picks 5 buildings which they feel are important/necessary/good for the kingdom/mechanics. We make a list, prioritize those based on costs, benefits, etc, and set out to building those. We go through the list until the end, then it's make a new list and so on.

This way we make sure the desires of each player are met and optimize only the construction order. If you pick a building you can be sure it's going to be made in the next months. Just don't pick anything too unrealistic, such as a Cathedral or an Arena (both of which are terribly expensive).

Sounds good Bron.

Here is the Map I have put together. Took a while to figure out how to get all of these pics out of the Kingmaker pdf. I have them all. As they are probably copyrighted, I would prefer making the link private by using your emails.

Let me know what you think,

Paxurbia - District 1

PM me your emails, and I will switch this to a limited access link which would be preferable.

Let me know which side we want the river on. I think the left and that way the city would be on the west side of the river just north of the lake. My plan is to label all the tokens so as to make it easier to know what is what on the map without having to look in the manual. I also have a spreadsheet which I will post that lays out the details of all the buildings.

Kingmaker Building Spreadsheet

Sorry if this does not look perfect, I use Apple-numbers, not the overpriced Microsoft program, so sometimes things do not export to xls perfectly.

Once I have all your emails, I will just share the link to the folder, then I can simply upload stuff without having to create new links every time.

Well assuming your map of the kingdom is set up straight so that the top is North, right is East and so on, then the River will be to the south. However, it's your decision on what position the castle faces.

Slingshot with lots of little stones.

Female Changling(Hulking) Sorcerer - Orc Bloodline/5 - HP: 12/28; AC16,T14,FF13

Ok - changed the city map slightly. Put grass in as the background and added a river and the lake on two sides. I decided to put the initial District next to the river, but away from the lake. I figure that we will not have the BP to build a waterfront until we get to a second district. And if we do, building it on the river slightly upstream from the lake will not be a bad thing. By putting it next to the river, we can build a mill and a few other things pier, etc. that require a water border.

Please let me know if I have missed anything.

Updated City Map

I actually set it of with nine city districts, not that we will ever get that big.

Also, do we want to build a House in the first month? You get one free every month that does not count against your building limit and several buildings have to be next to a house. Plus, unlike Telias and Ganit, some people like a roof over their heads.

Female Changling(Hulking) Sorcerer - Orc Bloodline/5 - HP: 12/28; AC16,T14,FF13

Regarding buildings:

1)Town Hall - a place for the government to really be run from. (We also get it for 1/2 price with the castle).
2) Brewery - in honor of our missing priest.
3) Library - so Zorestar has some place to hang out - also, if we are to be an enlightened nation, education should be forefront in the population's minds.
4) Mill - someplace for the farmers to bring their harvests
5) Dump - it is really cheap (2BP with a Town Hall)

Also,
Noble Villa - seems out of place, but for 1/2 price (12BP with the Castle), it is nice and gives us discounts on a Luxury Store which will add 2000 to the city value and give us 2 minor magic items.
Luxury Store - see above (1/2 price with the Noble Villa)

I would like an Inn, but it might be worth saving a little and splurging on a Market as this will save a ton on the Black Market, Inn and Shop (ok, most of the savings is on the Black Market).

Also, the Arena - 40BP is nice as it discounts a ton of stuff with sweet bonuses. -->Garrison (City Wall, Granary, Jail) and Theatre (Brothel, Park, Tavern).

Init 8, HP 56/56, Speed 30 AC 20, Touch 13, Flat-footed 18, CMD 19, Fort 6, Ref 10, Will 7

Total cost: 0 BP

Master of Gaming and Grognardia Current map

Concerning the magic items, just as a reminder, I'll use the GMG to roll up the random items. Since it is a magic item if I roll a mundane I'll re-roll until it's magical.

If you have the cash, you can buy magic items that your kingdom produces too.

Isn't there a 10% rule or something in place? I remember you mentioning that we can buy magic items if the price fell within a certain percentage of the kingdom's economy value.

Furthermore, what prices do we have to work with?

I just copy and pasted it from Alex's campaign. According to the spreadsheet your city's base value is 200gp. Don't think there are any magic items for 20 gp, but oh well.

Also that rule is for when you're adventuring and you want to buy a minor item like scrolls and the like. With minor items that are generated, I'll be rolling from the table in the GMG. You might get really decent rolls and gain a awesome minor item so sell off or buy for yourself.

Bron - how did you make that map. I have a Northern Greenbelt map that I put into MapTools, but I cannot find any decent hex tiles that I can use to indicate which hexes we have assumed control over. I started doing it with semi-transparent circles which works well, but not great. What did you use on yours to just make the one hex green? What program are you using?

Male Human Wizard 4 (hp: 33/33 AC: 13, FF: 12, T:12)

I confess, I am feeling very lost in all of this kingdom building stuff. I am also not clear how we should make decisions as a group. Even just coming up with a name for our country seemed very difficult.

All I know is that Zorestar would really push for a library. The town hall also sounds very useful.

Female Changling(Hulking) Sorcerer - Orc Bloodline/5 - HP: 12/28; AC16,T14,FF13

It is an maxing of game usefulness versus realism.

In a new town, you would expect a tavern and a shop as probably the first two thing, something of that sort. In this game it is what city/nation stats we want to maximize - right now for instance we have a ton of points in Income to increase our monthly BP. We made 8 BP last month because of a good roll.

I will try to get more stuff put together later on.

I don't know specifics but I would prefer to build based on what our kingdom needs from a role playing perspective. I have little interest in putting up a building just for the stats it provides. I realize that isn't optimal but that's my preference.

Female Changling(Hulking) Sorcerer - Orc Bloodline/5 - HP: 12/28; AC16,T14,FF13

Ok, for both game and gameplay purposes:

Month (2) - get the next hex NE ("River Crossing) of the city (which we still do not have a name for, so I will call it Carinaburg), Acquire Hex (6BP total)(1BP-acquire, 4BP-build farm, 1BP-road) - In city, Build Mill (6BP, +1 Econ, +1 Loyalty)

Month (3) - acquire hex E ("Sootscale Caverns"), build road (2BP total) - this should also give us the Varnhold bonus and get the mineral bonus - In city, Build Tannery (6BP, +1 Econ, +1 Stability)

Month (4) - acquire hex NE ("Nettles Crossing"), build road (2BP) - build Town Hall (11BP, +1 Econ/Stability/Loyalty)

Month (5) - acquire hex NE (no name, edge of map), build road, build farm (3BP) - build Smith (6BP, +1 Econ/Stability)

We should be earning 6-8 BP/month depending on our rolls. Once we have 4 road hexes, the connection to Varnhold, the goldmine and the sootscale caverns, we should add 1-2 more BP/round.

After this, we can build stuff that helps us game wise - Library (for Zorestar), Shop, Tavern (for Cambyl), Tradesman, Stable (for James), Dump

Everyone, please say yea or nay on this, and if you say nay, give some other options. My goal is to build up the town and expand the nation in a logical manner that also minimizes cost and maximizes returns (get the goldmine, gunpowder mine, sootscale mine, build farms on plains where it costs less, etc)

Male Human Bard 4

Just to let you guys know, both my computers crashed and I'm using a tablet to access the forums. This makes for torturous posting destined to have a few typing mistakes. Please forgive me for that.

I suggested upthread that everyone makes a list of the 5 buildings you think the city needs - then Carina and I can prioritize those considering mechanics. So, for me it would be:

1) Brothel - It is a frontier town, that sort of business is bound to appear sooner or later.

2) Graveyard - Not maximum priority, but we do need to have one or people literally have nowhere to drop dead.

3) Smith - If we could produce our own weapons and armor, making us a little more independent of the home country of Brevoy.

4) Town Hall - We could use it as a meeting place to discuss kingdom politics and as a shelter for citizens in case of a disaster.

5) Mill - Could be used to grind grain or cut lumber from the forest, providing us with ample supply to build.

Male Human Bard 4

Jameson, could you suggest some buildings you believe our kingdom needs?

Carina, you asked earlier what program I used - it was Corel Draw. I made an opaque white layer on top of the map and proceeded to cut little hexagons on it to show the map underneath. Neat little trick one of my players showed me.

Also, I think the Castle reduces the price of Noble Villa or Town Hall, meaning we couldn't follow both "trees". I really prefer going for Town Hall, it really wouldn't make any sense to build a noble villa and a luxury store when we don't even have people with money to buy those houses/items.

In Jameson's role these would be his priority:

Barracks (6 BP): A building to house city guards, militia, and military forces. Defense Modifier +2; Unrest –1.

Brewery (6 BP): A building for beermaking, winemaking, or similar use. Loyalty +1, Stability +1.

Garrison (28 BP): A large building to house armies, train guards, and recruit militia. Halves cost of City Wall, Granary, and Jail in same city; Loyalty +2, Stability +2; Unrest –2.

Jail (14 BP): A fortified structure for housing criminals. Loyalty +2, Stability +2; Unrest –2.

Stable (10 BP; must be adjacent to 1 house): A structure for housing or selling horses and other mounts. City base value +500 gp; Economy +1, Loyalty +1.
