Is it time for two versions of comic-con?

Maybe Comic-con vs CultR-con?

Two versions? No.

Just a reasonable, evenly enforced dress code.

This happens at nearly every Comic Con. Someone will wear a very revealing costume, and get away with it. Someone else will wear a costume that reveals just as much, and not. Sometimes, those two people are the same person.

Case in point, a few years back, a woman (whose name I do not remember) wore a Motoko Kusanagi costume. It was a full-coverage top, with a full coverage front. The back, however, was very revealing, and showed off the lady's very well toned butt. The costume, it needs to be said, was a point-for-point perfect representation of Shirow's original illustration of the character - right up to the light up bits on the costume.

This costume was entered in the costume contest. She wore it pretty much all day. She was seen on the floor of the convention, she was seen on the stage, she was seen out and about. She was fine and no one bothered her.

She wore it the day after the costume contest and got told she'd have to go home or put on a new costume because it was "against convention dress code policy."

Friend of mine wore a White Queen costume to Comic Con, two years in a row. Both years, the costume was identical - White leather corset, white bikini brief bottoms (rather conservative, considering the character), thigh high leather boots, and a big white cape. The cape, one should note, completely covered her from the back, and at no point was her posterior in full view of anyone.

The first year, everything was fine. The second year, the dress code had not changed, the costume was identical, but she was told she needed to either change the costume or leave, because it was a violation.

I've seen similar things happen at Baycon, at Fanimecon, at NorWesCon, Westercon, heck, even World Con the last time I went.

Part of the issue is that the security personnel who are enforcing these issues are doing so based on their own interpretation of the rules. Many conventions don't actually hire people who are certified as security agents, or who actually know local decency laws, to be their security staff. This leads to a gross range of interpretations, and in some cases, completely incorrect interpretations. Baycon and a few others have fixed this by requiring their security staffers to have guard cards (at least Baycon used to, I haven't been in a few years), and by enforcing a uniform and fair policy.

This can be fixed by reminding the security personnel that the convention is private property, so public decency laws are amended while on convention space. It can also be fixed by carrying the dress code at all times, and asking the security personnel to enumerate exactly how the code is being broken. Demand fair and equal treatment - if there are a half dozen Sucker Punch cosplayers showing off their butts in their mini skirts, and your costume is a full coverage pair of hot pants, demand to know why you're being targeted. Ask to speak to someone in charge. Do not make a scene - because that will get you kicked out - but calmly and firmly request to know why the rules are not being evenly enforced.

If, as happened at Fanime 2011, any portion of the rules and regulations document of the convention indicates that the "rules are open to interpretation of the staff at all times" (or something similarly indicating that the rules are basically at the whim of the person enforcing them), don't go to the convention. Write the Convention Chair and explain that such clauses lead to abuse, and that you will not be going again until they fix that clause.

Conventions are a two-way thing. The fans and the staff have to work together. Unfortunately, the staff sometimes forget that their job can only be done right if it's done fairly.

It's not even a thong like the cartoon, but a regular bikini-bottom! So showing a little skin is unacceptable (and the rule often seems to be applied unevenly), but violence-inspired cosplay is still perfectly fine. >:(

I am recently back lanzarote, we stayed in a family friendly resort, packet with people of all ages. Not my normal taste in holiday, but it was with my other halfs family, and I don't know how the'd have felt about being dragged around classical ruins in Greece.

Their was more flesh on show, within the hotels grounds than on that costume. We had twenty something topless and soaking up the sun 10' feet from the splash pool where toddlers where playing.

No one to my knowledge ever complained.

Seriously, the costume she got kicked out for is nothing. A little good clean kinky fun. Why is it that america seems completely unable as a culture to grasp that the human body is nothing to be ashamed of, that we all have one.

Edit: That said, kinda glad she changed, because the imperial officer images are very cool and much naughtier. :If I can find good copies, they can be added to my fetish wear art collection ;)

That's because this country was founded by Englishmen, and we've now decided that we needed to outdo our mother country in prudishness.

But we arn't really prudish ;)

It is slander and lies that we are...we just don't look as good as the spannish, french or italians...so we wear more ;)

I remember Cons back in the 80's in Glasgow where some if the girls used to go topless to the costume show..especially the ones playing succubi.

I also recall a Gencon UK in which two young ladies turned up as drow priestesses wearing leather costumes that could only be described as miniscule.

So no we are not as prudish as people want to make out. After all Spanking is the English Vice.

No America was founded by puritans. Big difference. Puritans had been kicked out of Britain for being wet blankets and were forced to spoil fun in their own country.

Don't forget the rampant capitalism in the Virginia Colonies, which predate the Puritans.

So we have religious zealots and money-crazed businessmen.

Settin' ourselves up for lunacy since day one.

What you need for lunacy is boat loads of petty criminals, Jacobites, and Irish rebels.

So we get hard drinking, hard fighting, stubborn, grifters, tea leafs, wide boys, standovermen, toe cutters and madams and prostitutes and pimps in a tough sunburnt country.

Sheep will try.... After spending some time around shearing sheds, I have noticed that sheep can get grumpy and they will go for you.

Having spent more than my fair share of time around them, I have reached an important conclusion. Most sheep are to stupid to be a danger to anything but themselves ;) Hence, the previso 'some of the sheep' ;)

Now if only it where my joke ;)

I am not so sure that sheep are stupid...... I think that they have a cunning plan... What that plan is I am not sure they know.

One major tip if you see a Kangaroo in or near water do not go near it. It's how they deal with predators, a roo will knock you down and hold you under water until you drown. It's their favorite defense against dingos and dogs, there have been cases where they have tried it on humans.

To be fair, the Puritans were only a small portion of the Mayflower, of which the rest of the passengers ALSO thought they were wet blankets. They just happened to be wet blankets with the notion they could enforce their wet-blanketness and the capacity to succeed at it.

There weren't any Puritans on the Mayflower; the Pilgrims who landed at Plymouth were a different religious sect whom the Puritans quite hated and vice versa. My sister (an American history scholar) used to work at Plimouth Plantation and made this point very clear to me. :) (If I AM misremembering, it's my mistake and not hers, I'm sure.)

Fascinating book about the people who WERE Puritans (and how their values did affect the development of American culture, for better and/or worse): The Wordy Shipmates by Sarah Vowell. Highly recommended.
