While nothing is settled, my understanding of the current discussion of the Caravan is that things are trending this way:
Possible point allocation: +1 Mobility, +2 Defense
Possible feats: Efficient Consumption, Circle the Wagons
Possible wagon purchases: 1 covered wagon, 1 supply wagon
Possible supply, trade goods, repair and improvement purchases: ?
Possible normal job set-up (this is a *very* loose set of suggestions, and bear in mind jobs can be changed at will on a day-to-day basis. In this possible set-up, including the feats, minimum Consumption is actually at -2, meaning food supplies can actually increase as you travel. That makes it easy for, say, a Spellcaster or Scout to occasionally switch jobs and serve as, for example, a Healer or Entertainer or Guard or different Spellcaster duty if they don’t want to do the same thing all the time):
Sandru, Bevelek, Vankor: Drivers
Shalelu: Scout
Koya: Fortune Teller
Ameiko: Spellcaster (possible switch-out as Entertainer?)
(Reta?: Guard)
All PC’s: Heroes
Kalimac, Liothonae, Myriana: 2 Drivers/1 Scout on three-day rotation
Melinda: Spellcaster (possible switch-out as ?)
Rhost: Cook
Hrithik: Scout (possible switch-out as ?)
Hrunndalf: Spellcaster (possible switch-out as Guard?)
(Tollin?: Wainwright)
Alaric: Spellcaster (possible switch-out as Healer?)

This caravan set up looks reasonable to me, at first blush.
As a side note to the Myri/Lio/Kalimac rotation, Kalimac is likely to offer Attatoq's company to Lio on her scouting turns. I doubt Attatoq wants to sit in a wagon or pace with the caravan if he has the option of stretching his legs with Lio or Kalimac.
That is, if Lio would appreciate Attatoq's company.

I am only interested in the chainmail, which is already taken, it seems. In any case, I am saving up for a breastplate, so I wouldn't keep the chainmail for long anyway.
Breastplate is probably the ultimate goal of those who want to stay with medium armor (which is to say, "me too!"). If it comes down to it, Hrunndalf can have the masterwork chain shirt. Rhost would be just as happy with Alaric's scale. Or even keeping his hide armor -- it smells like him.

Quick note about What Comes Next --
After the night's conversation ends, there'll be about a full day in Sandpoint to interact with NPC's and each other, prepare for the trip, and, ooc, finish up the details on the Caravan.
Then the Caravan trip will start, which will also be a lot more interaction than combat. I'll post an explanation of how that will roughly work in terms of the PBP later on.
With the Massive XP Boost you just got from giving the letter to Ameiko, you should be reaching 3rd level about two-thirds of the way through the trip. So in terms of gifts/insults, there should be two shots at it along this leg of the adventure, but plenty of time before the "clock runs out" on the first.
Kyrademon |
Couple of more notes on the Caravan:
1) Even if you're a Scout, you will be present for all significant events and can interact with NPC's as much as you like.
2) Any steps outside the bounds of the Caravan rules employed by the party for the Caravan (e.g., Liothonae warding the doors or cargo, Myriana laying traps around a campsite, someone casting an alarm spell, everyone popping into a Magnificent Mansion for the night, the purchase of ten sets of Horseshoes of the Zephyr, a Lord's Banner of Swiftness, or what have you) will be taken into account when I resolve any relevant situations or determine results.
Kyrademon |
A note about the day in town:
If you're doing something in public, just make it a public post, even if not everyone would be there. Use spoilers if you want to do anything private/restricted knowledge to a limited number of people.
Feel free to roleplay out what you would like to, and also to breeze past what you don't want to (Both "I go into the store and ask Lily what fresh vegetables are available" and "I purchase 1 day's rations" are fine.)
I won't know the total until the next loot division is done tomorrow, but I'm guesstimating you'll have about 300 gp more apiece to spend.
Hrithik and Tollin, that means you'll probably be getting about 500 gp total to spend past your 1st level allotment.

I just gotta say...
I've been following your Jade Regent play thread, and you're my new favorite GM. If/When/How you start a new game, I'd love to reserve a spot!
Your players have been excellent, and I'm really impressed with the caliber of RP I've seen exhibited in the thread.
Kudos.
Melinda Sorn |
Look suspiciously at the newcomer... You can't have my spot.
:) ~ Nah, Kyrademon is one of the most enjoyable GMs I've had the luck to play with.... And a far better one than myself.
Edit: Plus I really like the combat resolution system that is in use... Makes things very efficient.

Though he would have to pay their value back at a later point, if no one else has any scroll desire, the False Life scroll and one of the Cure Light Wounds scrolls could smoothly add to Hrithik's accumulated formulae known.
Caravan-wise, Hrithik can be a Fortune-Teller, Guard, Guide, Healer, Scout, Spellcaster, and Trader.
In particular, if it would help to have him be a Consumption-Reducing Scout at all times, he can be a Consumption-Reducing Scout at all times.
Over my dead and rapidly cooling body. Those scrolls are mine!
Actually I will take One of the Cure light Wounds. Can't use False Life, so that would be useless. But I do have a scroll case.

Currently, I have the following claims down:
Claimable items
Multiple claims:
Jade and Cherrywood Chest (250 gp) – Melinda/Ameiko
Ring of climbing (1250 gp) - Myri/(Melinda, but Melinda has as of this post said she will defer to Myri)
Scroll of False Life, caster level 7 (175 gp) – Hrithik/Melinda
In the case of a multiple claim -
1) A PC will always get an item over an NPC. The NPC will not get the item unless the PC agrees to give it up for them before the time limit (about ten hours from now.)
2) If someone has said they will defer to the claim of another, I'll take them at their word unless they post otherwise
3) In the event of more than one flat-out claim, after all other claims have been resolved, we'll look at who has gotten the most so far. (Right now, I believe it's fairly close between Melinda and Hrithik, but I think the Wand of Grease is going to push Melinda up enough that the scroll will go to Hrithik.)
Single Claims:
Whispering Shrike - Ameiko
Wand of grease with 19 charges (142.5 gp) - Melinda
Scroll of Cure Light Wounds, caster level 7, nonparty use (87.5 gp) - Hrithik
Masterwork Chain Shirt, medium (125 gp) - Rhost
Masterwork Chainmail, medium (150 gp) - Alaric
Masterwork dagger, medium (151 gp) - Kalimac
Masterwork cold iron wakizashi, medium (185 gp) - Myri
Various pieces of fine jewelry (760 gp) - 600 gp worth claimed by Myriana, at least 50 gp + all unclaimed remaining claimed by Kalimac
Party items
Scroll of cure light wounds (caster level 7) – carried by Liothonae

Great, my internet connection at home broke two days ago, and I'm falling way behind already... I don't know if I can keep up that time commitment on the long term. Even just catching up takes ages.
Then again... to leave Ameiko to Hrithik... must... persist! :P
Kyrademon |
Oof, that sucks. I feel your pain.
As I've said before, pacing is the *perennial* problem of PBP's. They are a delicate dance between keeping the slower posters from being overwhelmed, and keeping the faster posters from being bored, and perfection is rarely achieved.
For those of you who post less frequently, one thing I can say is DO NOT FEEL OBLIGATED to respond to everything. While signing on to see 50 new posts can be daunting, there is a high chance that a decent number of them are, say, a conversation about fish.
If anyone is worried that they simply won't be able to keep up, please feel free to contact me to discuss if there's any way to help you out. (Ideally, I'd like to keep this game fun for everyone involved. Kind of the point.)

Then again... to leave Ameiko to Hrithik... must... persist! :P
I was taking pains not to interact with NPCs with Hrunndalf around when you seemed unresponsive :-) (Also moved the slave conversation to the kitchen wash area so others could involve themselves, or not, as they wished.)
If both Hrithik and Hrunndalf are present with Ameiko, Ry and I can take a point of honor to not race ahead with roleplay without allowing Hrunndalf opportunities to interact. Maybe spoiler tag some of it to "GM, Hrunn, and Hrith" to allow slower chats to be going on while the adventure moves forward?

Over my dead and rapidly cooling body. Those scrolls are mine!
Could Liothonae and Hrithik split the two cure light scrolls? Hrithik only needs one to add the spell to his formulary. In-character, that would likely be a matter of Hrithik paying Liothonae for it, since Liothonae actually has possession, so Liothonae's player has veto right if Liothonae cherishes both of them :P
Likewise, if Melinda has a more immediate use for the False Life scroll, consider Hrithik's claim relinquished. Hrithik can't add it to his formulary until level 4.
Finally, Hrithik has no request at all for the Water Walk scroll ... 7th level is much too far away for scrolls acquired now.
Kyrademon |
Could Liothonae and Hrithik split the two cure light scrolls?
Liothonae has already noted she is only taking one of the Cure Light scrolls, so this is what will happen in the current claim set-up. There's no need for Hrithik to pay anyone for it, just keep the value as part of the tally on your character sheet if you get it.
(Liothonae, you would not need to keep the value of your scroll tallied, as it would be a party item if you carry it; Hrithik will be employing his for personal use only.)
Hrithik Ranbhir |
There's no need for Hrithik to pay anyone for it, just keep the value as part of the tally on your character sheet if you get it.
At this point then, the claim will stand if the local temple doesn't have a cheaper, level-1 cure light wounds scroll. If they do, Hrithik will use that for his formulary and leave the level-7 one for party use. If the town doesn't have one, though, the claim on the level-7 scroll for transcribing would stand.

OFFICIAL SECOND LOOT DIVISION
Remember that any item something below replaces, such as a suit of armor, can be sold at half price.
The following items have now been officially claimed by party members:
Ring of climbing (1250 gp) – Myri
Masterwork cold iron wakizashi, medium (185 gp) - Myri
Various pieces of fine jewelry (600 gp) – Myri
Various pieces of fine jewelry (160 gp) – Kalimac
Wand of grease with 19 charges (142.5 gp) - Melinda
Scroll of False Life, caster level 7 (175 gp) – Hrithik
Masterwork Chain Shirt, medium (125 gp) - Rhost
Masterwork Chainmail, medium (150 gp) - Alaric
The following party items have been assigned to the following people:
2 scrolls of cure light wounds, caster level 7 – carried by Liothonae and Alaric
5 potions of cure light wounds – carried by Hrunndalf, Myriana, Kalimac, Melinda, and Rhost
2 potions of cure moderate wounds – carried by Hrithik and Liothonae
3 potions of lesser restoration – carried by Alaric, Hrunndalf, and Kalimac
In addition to the above, all 7 people who went into the swamp receive the following from this loot division (which includes a substantial reward from the town for solving the Goblin problem):
315.5 gp
Hrithik, you will ... I don’t know, find in a sock the following amount to add to your first-level starting money:
500 gp

OK, the time is coming up when you should be finalizing the Caravan.
You can NOT assume that the caravan will have such things as sledge hammers, pick and shovels, and hemp rope.
Tollin is still on vacation, so will take a couple more days to join. However, if the Caravan leaves before he arrives, Sandru can switch off as a wainwright – the Caravan will need to stop to make any repairs anyway.
After buying new wagons, you have 1,200 gp left to spend. You have a cargo capacity of 32. One cargo slot will be taken by “treasure”.
I might suggest something like the following:
Cold weather gear (200 gp, 1 unit of storage)
Wagon Reinforcements, Fortune Teller’s Wagon (500 gp, 1 unit of storage)
5 units of stores (25 gp, 5 units of storage)
10 units of trade goods (100 gp, 10 units of storage)
11 units of repair materials (225 gp, 11 units of storage)
(This would leave 3 storage units remaining, and 150 gp remaining in caravan fund for later purchases)
Kyrademon |
A word about how I'm going to handle Caravan travel --
The journey to Brinewall will take 9-10 days if you go flat out and never have to stop or decide to stop. So it could take a bit longer than that, but almost certainly won't take less.
I will post periodic "this is what happens today" updates, at whatever pace seems appropriate to the current situation.
If it's something that calls for roleplaying, such as coming across an abandoned pile of 300 crying babies, I'll have you roleplay it out. If it's a simple combat, like a bandit attack, I'll probably just resolve it through the caravan mechanic and let you know what happens and if you need to stop to make repairs (Why? Because random encounters are tedious and a waste of everyone's valuable time.)
During the trip, you may of course interact with other PC's and NPC's as much as you like.
(Warning -- the site with the "weeping baby" cartoon is very fun, but any comic not labeled "safe" in the archive should be considered EXTREMELY Not Safe For Work. The "weeping baby" cartoon is Safe.)

There should be one unit of cargo/storage in one of the supply wagons for "Glassware". The Alchemist's Lab and the assorted jars for the Perilous Pickle Project will consume about 50-60 lbs, which is what the Player's Guide recommends be considered a unit of cargo space.
random encounters are tedious and a waste of everyone's valuable time
Exception: the oft-mentioned, never depicted "Soggy River Monster" ... if that Mysterious Mystery of Extreme Mystery were to show up as our one "random" encounter, I'd be interested in playing it out solely to see what it looks like and what all the hype was about. Maybe it has 3 faces, one leg, and can only derive sustenance from eating mammal skulls, or something. Or perhaps it's actually a misunderstood subterranean burrower who wants constructive criticism on how to become a better drummer.

Okay, I have a rough draft of the caravan sheet here:
CLICK ME
We still need to pick (2) feats and get people's normal job pinned down (since that can be fluid, esp for casters).
Positions that are still completely unfilled: Guide (K: Geograpgy) and Trader
----
I don't have a clue how a horse would work with the caravan system.
EDIT: I will work on the text being larger next time.
Hrithik Ranbhir |
Positions that are still completely unfilled: Guide (K: Geograpgy) and Trader
I think several of us can do Trader. Everyone with ranks in Diplomacy. Since we'll generally do Trading at times when we can regularly buy food and not be worried about attack every six seconds, we can most likely pull Scouts and Guards and Spellcasters to be Traders for the relevant day.
Hrithik can do Guide, but if so he's not doing Scout.
