Modifying the Black Sisters [many spoilers]

Liberty's Edge

I'm thinking that the Black Sisters need to be witches. And in a coven. With an actual hag.

So here's my thinking: the encounter as written is two CR 9 opponents, for a total CR of 11. But three CR 8 opponents would have the same CR, yes? So I'm thinking about rewriting them as two 9th level witches and a 6th level green hag cleric of Gyronna. I'm looking for build suggestions I can use for the two witches and the hag, though, to make sure they are still worthy of their CR. (I'm particularly thinking that the hag might wind up underpowered.) Anyone got any ideas?

You could go with 2 8th level witches with the advanced simple template as well as the hag (who'll be getting the class array for being a cleric) without changing the encounter CR.

Although I'd be more in favor of just tacking on advanced simple to all three of them as you have them for a mild +1 encounter CR bump. It would depend on what your group is "built" at.

I'm actually getting way ahead of myself for this - my PCs have just finished dealing with Kressle. However, since one of my PCs is a changeling, I want to push the hag elements a bit more (I've decided that her mom is the Knurly Witch, a decision made easier by the fact that the player went for a hulking changeling), and actual witches just seemed to work a little better for me.

Do you think 8th level witches with better stats would make more sense than 9th level witches?

can you not make one of them 10th so she has a major hex....

Not if I want to a) keep the CR the same and b) make the two human Sisters have the same stats, both of which I do want to do.

That answer really depends on your PCs "build" (point buy array or equivalent). At the low levels the higher ability scores are less visible from behind the GMs screen. They really show their effects at the level range of Chapters 3+.

The only real advantage 9th level gives the bad guys are the 5th level spells. Since the hag is only a 6th level cleric herself, it leaves the heavy hitting to the Sisters.

One question you'll have to answer is how they set up shop in that room they've commandeered. A second question is if they've done anything to bolster the boys camped out front ... :)

Liberty's Edge

I haven't truly read, let alone actually studied this encounter yet.

But anecdotally, many years ago (when 3rd edition was new), I remember having an encounter in a swamp involving a coven of witches (hags specifically).

Someone above saying "wonder what to do with the boys out front", reminded me of this old encounter I designed which:

Was all under a Hallucinatory Terrain and Veil spell.

The former made the area look far more hospitable and inviting to the PCs who had been out meandering about in a deadly swamp (obviously designed to attract prey) and the latter spell made the PCs think they were seeing large peaceful toads, lizards, turtles etc nearby - but were truly trolls who were the muscle for the hags.

The PCs were drugged in the food by the "sole" druid woman living in the swamp. One character didn't eat - not trusting it, and another made it's saving throw; the encounter truly began when the hags came to eat the sleeping PCs - after having already invaded their dreams/nightmares.

when my group rolled a bunch of hags as an encounter i made use of their pwoerful coven abilities and made it look like the party had found a lost temple to erastil....all suckered in and i did some real damage before the poor hags where butchered
